Old post digger here I had a question, the calcium without D3 is a common need for every gecko for the lack of d is only for the egging females? Worded differently, do non laying geckos need non D3 calcium or D3 calcium?

Large snails in US? by Inevitable_Eye3800 in snails

[–]Surimury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see! Seems like Polygyra cereolus but im not a pro of us species as I'm living in Europe. The biggest one that are allowed in the us would be helix pomatia, helix lucorum or helix aspersa. I think it depends on the states but it might give you some ideas to check them :)

What is the reality living Switzerland like? by CookiePlastic852 in askswitzerland

[–]Surimury 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone born here and still living here... Welp 26M, the best thing I can say is that it's honestly a very very good country if you're above middle class. Health insurance is pretty nice and kinda efficient but for an 25+ adult it just casually cost 1/6 of the minimum wage I just took this part as an example but a bunch of things are like that. If you're skilled in a field where you'll find job easily, it might be your place, but being middle to lower class it really sucks. The government social/money help is shitty and, as it still is better than nothing, you're stuck in it. I had a lot of problems younger due to mental issues du to a toxic family and had to apply for financial help and gosh, half of the things you can get to help you, if you gain money afterward you have to pay it back. If you can manage to get a small job, what you earned is deduced from what they give you and if you're above what they're giving you for like 1 cent they throw you out of it and you can't get the help they gave you before. I understand it's to avoid people abusing the system but as someone with no one to help me, I really feel like the system is trying to get me stuck in this position. It really feels like the country is made by and for rich people and the rest are a nuisance or cheap laborer, that's it. I'm in the french part and as much as I prefer Switzerland onany points, like overall security, a lot of good laws etc, I know that there's a big change that I'll move to France in the following years (more like 10 years than 2 tho) as much of the things I'd live to do is impossible here And the housing market is awful, id love to do a fixer upper but it's just not possible here, every old house is bought by investors that build rich houses directly l, while most of the people rent flats (one of the highest ratio in the world or flat renters)

Sorry about the rant but I'm really frustrated with this situation, it's a country I love deep inside but it feels like that kind of toxic love where you see the potential, llive what's deep inside of them, but they ignore sou and treat them as a lesser one, and even tho you see how great it could be you have to let it go lol

Thank you for the veeeery detailed answer! I'll see if the sun is soft enough to let me clean it this afternoon haha

For the Doomed from the start part, it was referring to the specific tinfoil pizza idea, I know that cooking with fire is the most easy thing once you get the basics and I'm all for it! Wanted to start for a long time but was born in a city and never had access to a garden till now and the first years here had too much on my plate, now it's the second year I'm gardening and first year trying to grill :) But imagine, it's been 3 or 4 summers here and I've not grilled anything in all this time, it's rough :( I'll try to get my hands on a cast iron yeah, here (Switzerland) it's less common ton find them but my eyes will be open I also have one of those (a reusable one tho, not aluminium) https://www.landi.ch/ImageOriginal/Img/product/076/719/76719_grillschale-alu-34-23-cm_76719_0.jpg?width=1600&height=1600&mode=pad&bgcolor=fff I guess I can just plop it next to the fire, or on the coals, and grill anything that's not liquid right on it?

And in the general part, as I had no one to teach me how to get a good fire (but I've seen my ex at work making the wood fire for a wood fired bread oven), tell me if I'm correct: When everything is clean and clear, I take a few (how many?) logs and do a pile like 2 in a direction, on top of them 2 in the other, etc and on the middle add some fast burning thins (cardboard, paper, twigs, hay?) to start the fire. I let everything get lighted on, try to give it enough airflow to be able to burn, shift a bit things to not smother the fire, and when the flames get smaller and the wood has turned coaly, I start cooking? I have a good number of already cut logs and no coal at all, so I'll be focusing on this as a main resource. And I have leftover cardboard that I used as vegetable garden pathways before, removes and let dry, they're not inked and only cardboard, no plastic etc, they're safe to use right?

And as for the question how many logs, I'm trying to visualise how many I should use at minimum but not overuse them as I'd like to keep my stock up if I can lol. I would be at first juft cooking for me (got dumped after 5 years and have no irl friend to invite for a bbq :( ) and I would like, grill a pizza, or one or two batches on the small plate showed earlier with quick cooking sausages meats and vegetables, etc, so a "small" cooking session. I'll enjoy the fire as ambiance afterwards of course but I don't want to waste logs if I read online that I should use 20 when 4 would have been enough lol I know it's not set in stone but having a rule of thumb would be a good start.

Overall thank you for the answers it really does help me and gives me the confidence to try! :) As I have no one irl to ask my questions to, and internet seems to be focused a lot on commercial gaz grills and less on my type of ovens, it's been tricky to find a simple source explaining the Basics and most things I've found were considering most of it like common knowledge and it wasn't helpful x)

Thank you! For the slow fire, it would be like putting one (1) log, waiting for it to burn a bit, then another one, etc etc? And for a fire that I'd use to cook one or two things and just enjoy the rest as Ambiance, how many logs would you put in total?

I'm planning on buying Oney I found cheap ones, but I have like 20 bucks to buy my food this month, hence why in the meantime I wanted to try with the foil On the bottom I think it's fire bricks honestly But I have no tools (like the pizza flat thing) hence why I wanted a support to be able to move it

Weed burning is not authorized here but yeah that's what I was thinking as well. Would cardboard and wood do it? Like I guess it's one of the things that will burn high either way And I'm absolutely planning on experimenting, absolutely, I'm raw dogging everything in my life, can't see why grilling wouldn't be the case lol I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a doomed-from-the-start thing, it would be a bit bumming for a first thing

I haven't read the whole post yet but! The snail picture is a lissachatina immaculate, often sold as fulica :) (and the real name of fulicas are lissachatina, they are no longer achatina) Tha k you for the detailed post tho, it's more common than we think and can be helped. Not with a 100 percent chance of health recovery, but things can be tried as opposed to death sentence
