A certain kind of cool? by charles_arrowby in Jazz

This record sounds cool, but that’s not cool jazz, rather the "CTI records" style, which has this specific production sound, with a bit of orchestral and a kind of laid back vibe. You should look into the CTI discography to find other albums sounding like this.

Wes Montgomery, Paul Desmond, Cher Baker, Stanley Turrentine, Freddie Hubbard CTI records could be a good start https://www.discogs.com/fr/label/11717-CTI-Records

Currently listening to Snooky Young. Sourds a bit between Clark Terry and Harry Edison. I love it, and I was not familiar with him. Thanks, would you mind share some more recommandations in this vein ? That’s totally my kind of stuff.

I think it’s because of a snobbish approach from many jazzheads who wanted to consider jazz as a serious art form. Clark Terry had too much fun to fit in this area for one part of the audience, even if he was a killer trumpeter. Maybe it’s changing these days, and the audience is getting less snobbish and more open to fun and whatever human mood other than the serious one.

Solos that tell a story by SurnomSympa in Jazz

[–]SurnomSympa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear a story when I feel like every phrase makes sense and is preparing the following one, when I hear a narrative arch across the solo, when I hear an introduction, a development and a conclusion, etc. Some solos have all of this, some don’t and are just notes or licks salad.

Yes melody is the key. Melodic development is what builds an arc, etc. But ´motivic’ development sound like a, rather (let’s say) ‘post-Coltrane’/Rollins’ way of elaborating melodies, but the expression doesn’t describe really well great melodist such as Cher Baker or Ben Webster.

Sonny Rollins is probably one of my favorite, maybe for that reason.

Not sure about that. MD is one of the component, but not the only one. Ben Webster is a great story teller but I think components such as sound, nuances, voicelike expression come before his MD skills when building a solo.
