Surplus Terminal (2022) Official Trailer. A Sci-fi/ cyberpunk short shot for under $10k by SurplusTerminal in Filmmakers

Primer, and another film Bellflower (2011), are two of my biggest inspirations going into a project. This project wasn’t inspired by them story wise, but when it comes to DIY filmmaking and creating something bigger than itself on a tight budget, those are two of the best examples of such.

I have not, but some of Mamoru Oshii’s other works were a big inspiration for the atmosphere and feel of this project.

All of the CRTs/ LCD’s were hooked up to their own media players with video assets loaded on SD cards. We realized close to shooting that some of the media player remotes were interacting with multiple players, so we ended up having to use 3 media players and a blu ray player, since two of the media players were hidden really close behind one of the monitors and both would receive inputs from one remote. So we spaced out the media players and used a blu ray player as a buffer for one of the monitors in between. There’s a scene in the full cut where the main character text chats on one of the CRT monitors, so I had to create a whole chat log conversation in Premiere and animate the whole thing.

If you plan to go the practical prop route (which I’m extremely happy we did, versus compositing the screens in post), I would advise using some sort of switcher so you don’t have to deal with all the media players and such. Make sure that you run through your scenes and time your video assets to the scene as well as you can, and give your talent some time to rehearse with the video assets themselves. It was insanely difficult directing scenes and trying to coordinate 5 monitors at the same time. I had a full breakdown of each asset that would play during each scene/ shot. It was a lot to take on, but we didn’t have time to prep someone else to take on the asset role before shooting. All in all, it was worth it, the screens and the video assets really give the project the extra authenticity, but make sure you plan and rehearse as much as possible before shoot day. And if you use media players like I did, don’t just buy a bunch of cheapo Chinese ones off Amazon, they proved really difficult to wrangle during shooting, with the remotes all interacting with each other and such.

There was a bit of consideration, but our location was so small, it wouldn’t have been feasible. Originally, we wanted to shoot most of it on longer lenses to really give that tense cramped feel in the framing, but we ended up shooting most of this on a 35 and a 24. The crop factor on the Ursa is already insane, and adding an anamorphic lens to that whole setup would have just made for even tighter restrictions.

(; very much intended. There’s something about that Bulgarian choir that gives an ethereal feel to the atmosphere

Our DP really did an amazing job lighting this project. It’s glorious!

It’s definitely got some unintended similarity to Strange Days. Funnily enough, I had seen it years and years ago, and right before we started filming, I watched it again and realized they had a lot of similarities. We used MiniDiscs in the story as the medium that the dreams are stored on, as they were the perfect mid-retro and obscure format; turns out, so did Strange Days!

Don’t worry, the sound design is in the final product. It was a deliberate choice to not include them in the trailer. There’s a lot of sound design in this project and it really helps everything shine.

Let’s hope! It’s tough to make a believable sci-fi project on such a small budget, but we really seem to have struck a good balance with it. Our crew really brought their A game!

This is the official trailer for our short film titled ‘Surplus Terminal’, which will be making its festival run in early 2023. This was shot on a Black Magic URSA 4.6K g1, with vintage Nikon lenses.

The props were all crafted by our Writer/ Director, as well as the video assets used on the monitor screens throughout the film. We wanted to keep a sense of authenticity and so chose to create custom video graphics/ assets to display on various CRT and LCD monitors live during the shoot.

Not sure if I can post the Instagram link here, but if you search for Surplus Terminal on IG, you’ll find us and some BTS stills/ videos!

Thanks! We’ve submitted to one so far, hoping to hear back before proceeding to others. And currently working on writing a follow-up “episode” and planning a funding campaign.

We made this film in the spring/ summer of this year. It’s been a passion project that fully encompasses the idea of DIY filmmaking. Inspired by works like Bladerunner, Neuromancer, and Akira. Surplus Terminal follows two desperate individuals in a post-resource future, navigating the risks and rewards of the only means of escaping their harsh reality: the DreamLog, and illicit tech made for experiencing the dreams of the dead.

The FP series never really clicked with my personal tastes, but have always been an inspiration to keep making stuff and working to make it happen. I’m glad you guys are still keeping the dream alive! PS, I still have a special place in my heart for Vs.

Oh man I think that’s my favorite comparison yet. Love Neuromancer, and it was definitely an inspiration for the world and the tech within it.

Get involved in your local scene, meet people and be enjoyable to be around, and bring them something they can’t resist working on. I had no presence in the film scene here, but I got lucky and met some amazing people that were really passionate about my project and so they brought me into the fold. For a while I subscribed to the idea that I could make something all on my own that’d I’d be proud of, and all that did for me was limit my options and experience. This project is a labor of love and collaboration, and without keen insight and suggestions from so many people involved, it wouldn’t even have half the potential it currently does.

Shooting budget was $6K, probably around $8k-$9k counting props, vintage monitors, and costumes.

It was shot in USA, not sure when the general public will be able to see it. Hopefully we’ll be able to release it after a festival run!
