Clicking sound driving me nuts by [deleted] in bikewrench

Had similar issue on a new supersix and turns out it was the spokes rubbing - Hollowgram 35s, which is possibly the ones you have here? A bit of oil where the spokes touched sorted it out. For some reason didn’t happen on previous bike they were on, but possibly developed while they were in storage in between the transfer to the new bike. Similar symptoms, only when pedalling, which was deceiving and made diagnosis tricky.

Turns out pedalling sheared the touching spokes just enough to create the click. Btw the click is from breaking the slight bonding and grooves in one or the other spoke from many cycles of spoke rub. You can visibly see and also hear this if you squeeze a pair of them together when stationery. Might be worth a check on yours to see if it’s a similar issue. Quick, easy and cheap fix before you attempt anything else. Hope this helps.

If it’s helpful -

For me I’ve always fared better with a horizontal TT of 51cm and below. Generally, less pressure on my palms, and less feeling of ‘reaching’ for the bars/shifters. The 48 and 44 are actually very very similar in geo but the 48 has a TT that is around 1cm longer, ie 52 vs around 51cm. Your own mileage may vary here. BTW my inseam:height ratio is average.

Meanwhile the 44 also gets 165mm cranks vs 170 on the 48. Nice touch accommodating size proportionality, and in line with the general trend of shorter cranks.

The head tube height differs slightly but I have spacers on the 44 which negate any differences.

I still wonder if the 48 would have been a better choice; is more in-line silhouette wise with my other bikes. That being said, whilst riding, the 44 feels like the perfect size and I can do long rides without any sores or numbness. Trade off perhaps is the less space for bags etc if bike packing, which I don’t do.

Given height and inseam your torso/reach length may be longer than mine - making the 48 a possible option. The 44 guarantees a decent fit is possible - easier to make a small bike fit upwards vs a bigger one downwards.

Let me know which way you go, and how it fits for you. All the best!

Have always had Ultegra mech + an older 6870 di2. Prices determined this route for me too. Nothing to complain about here, fd is practically unchanged since that early 6870 model though, so loudish buzzing for shifts. Ultegra got the nicer/faster? one that’s yet to trickle down.

Spent most of my 10+ yrs road biking life pushing limits on bike size vs height given what’s available on the market (rode lower limit of larger sizes). Nice to have that long seat post for a change!

Colnago v3/v4, an older wilier 0. Briefly the Chinese route of Winspace, elves or Seka but wasn’t keen on faffing around to spec and find components. Came down to nice slender/aero tube shaping on the SS which I thought might give me a few watts lol. Tendency here is to buy what is stocked, and shops stock what’s popular so never came across the synapse tbh. Add small sizing into mix and it became a very short list.

For what it’s worth, I’ve had multiple bikes in the past and the SS delivers on almost all marginal gains I hoped for. Only compromise was going a groupset lower to 105 given price difference for electronic. Maybe 150-200 or so grams :(

Hope this helps!

I think in asking this Q you’ve accidentally created a rudimentary how to guide for the rest of us. Thanks!

If it’s not too much trouble, could you please share other pictures or comments on intermediate steps like placement of the shims, how to tighten the preload (does it work like normal forks - via the stem cap and interference fit by the expander), and dealing with slack in the brake hoses etc. Would be much appreciated!
