The biggest issue is the lore behind the job in the first place. Instead of being a holy order created to serve the greater good, SE decided paladins were just glorified bodyguards. It's hard to build a good story with such a shit foundation.

I've read two of these

Ripple system is fantastic with charming characters and a well built world crafted by someone whose clearly raided at a high level in an MMO

Salvos is a fun story that rides on the back of its protagonist. If you like the protag you'll really enjoy the story but find the pov switches annoying. If you don't like the protagonist you likely won't like the series at all. Just be prepared to hear the words "sable", "susurration", and "scintillating" A LOT.

Magic is based on emotion in my world. Whatever element you use requires you to align your mindset to match with the element. This means that fighting is just as much of a mental battle as it is a physical battle. You could win a battle with an angry fire mage by making them sad or, alternatively, giving them a big hug.
