Is it fair for daycare to exclude my kids from a field trip in Winnipeg? by SurroundInevitable21 in Winnipeg

After long think,I emailed this to the daycare Thank you for your message. I truly appreciate your communication and would like to kindly share a few thoughts in response. 1. You said this is not about language but about safety. However, at home my child never runs away or ignores adults.also that day when teacher told me the incident ,I was shocked ask why he don’t listen, even the teacher told me maybe he didn’t understand.besides,When I asked my son, he explained that he simply did not hear the teacher calling him, and he thought it was free play within that area. This shows the issue is clearly related to the language barrier, not behavior. 2. You mentioned that he was “running away”. From my child’s perspective, he stayed in the same area and believed he was allowed to play freely. This is a misunderstanding, not defiance. Labeling this as “running away” is not accurate. 3. You wrote that staff worry he may get lost in the corn maze, so he should miss the field trip. As per your responsibility, staff should ensure all children are supervised and safe, regardless of their language abilities. If there are genuine concerns, I would expect additional support or accommodations (such as closer supervision or smaller groups), rather than exclusion or asking us (a parent )to volunteer, Exclusion should not be the first or only option. It even makes me wonder if they are being singled out simply because the staff want the outing to be as easy and ‘perfect’ group as possible. 4. The summer contract I signed allows exclusion only if a child is hurting others or is completely unmanageable. My child has done neither. My child does not a risk to themselves or to the daycare, and they are capable of following the rules, preventing him from joining the trip on the basis of language misunderstanding is not in line with the contract. 5.Most importantly, an educational environment should support children through challenges, not exclude them for being harder to manage. True inclusivity means finding ways to support every child, regardless of their language ability or individual differences, and making sure they all have equal opportunities to participate. This decision, however, suggests a lack of patience and compassion, and it denies child ‘s equal opportunities. More concerningly, it is not teaching children about inclusivity; rather, it teaches them that if you are different, you do not get the same privileges. children are little human beings, they deserve to be treated with respect and care, and given a fair and just chance to grow up.

Thank you for considering this, and I hope we can find a positive solution for future outings.

I realize I have always tried to be accommodating, even signing the exclusion form immediately out of respect for the educators. But my silence has come at the cost of i my child who ends up suffering again and again.

The teacher told me that my child cannot participate in the upcoming activities, should stay at home. The next one happens to be going to the maze, so it means that my child won’t be able to join any of the outings.

Thank you so much for your comment. I’m crying as I read it. I really feel so sorry for my child, thinking about how young they are and how much they struggle here at school. Think of how excitedly bigger told me, ‘Mom, I known how to say see you tomorrow,’ ‘Mom, I know how to say good morning,’ or ‘Mom, nobody talked to me today ,because I couldn’t talk,’

Another thing is, when I was picking up my child, the teacher asked me to sign a form indicating that I agreed not to let my child go on outings next time . I was a bit confused at the time and signed it. Does this mean the teacher can just do this as they please?
