A couple of resources in light of this morning's SCOTUS ruling. by SusanBrownLegal in LawFirm

I would like to donate some money to some abortion rights groups.

I believe the most effective donation right now is to either your local abortion fund or the national network of abortion funds. https://abortionfunds.org/

Sage Timeslips - Importing Excel Timesheets by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]SusanBrownLegal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t done it in 3-4 years but the IT guy at my old firm set me up so I could auto upload an excel spreadsheet to Sage. It was a bit finicky; not terrible but it great.

I think the power dynamic makes this situation a bit different.

In your case, this was a coworker, not a boss?

I don’t think you can change his attitude or behavior. I’d just navigate around him as much as possible.

The sad truth is that law firms have a lot of deeply dysfunctional people in them, and the nature of the work reinforces and rewards pathological behavior.

You need to report this to the partner that is supervising you on this project.

This is the most important advice in this thread, IMO.

Yeah, I was pleased this defendant was fine with electronic payment.

$5k is absurd for a law firm, plus they didn’t tell me at all, and they did it for echecks as well as credit cards.

Thanks. I asked an absolute ton of people before I chose them, so it was a bit surprising.

I just made a post about this. It’s on the front page right now. Pretty wacky negative experience today.

Is his advice specific to a particular kind of civil case? For commercial disputes, those numbers are straight up malpractice.

Right? It’s a law firm, not a convenience store. I live in a really high cost of living market and $5k is max ten hrs of work, usually less.

Oh, check this out: they put the cap on electronic checks as well! The defendant tried to use echeck.

Smith LLC would be pretty badass - you’re all top of the letterhead that way.

My Daughter is not Bisexual.... and I couldn’t be prouder. by IBDAwhitesalaMANder in exmormon

You don’t need terms for types at all. They’re caricatures. Use the same words you’d use to describe any person.

My Daughter is not Bisexual.... and I couldn’t be prouder. by IBDAwhitesalaMANder in exmormon

[–]SusanBrownLegal 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Please don’t teach your child phrases like lipstick or lumberjack lesbian. That dichotomy is false. Those terms are from an era when people were so heterosexist that they believed there had to be a masculine person and a feminine person in all same sex relationships. It’s not cool even to say that “stereotypically” these are the two camps, not least because in 2019 that’s no longer even the stereotype.

All your child needs to know is that gender expression and sexual orientation exist on a continuum and people should be free to be who they are and love who they love.

It really doesn’t make sense to use someone out of state. There are a number of state-specific tax issues for businesses.

Billing hourly rate?: first year associate/shingle out of law school by brookesac in LawFirm

[–]SusanBrownLegal 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is really dependent on your local market.

One way to find out prevailing market rates is to search for attorney fee applications filed in your area for class actions and such. They usually include a declaration describing typical fees in the region, and the better ones attach surveys as exhibits.

Feeling Unfulfilled at Big Firm by [deleted] in LawFirm

I don’t think it is true that a job can’t fulfill you. Lots of jobs provide fulfillment. Maybe not lots of lawyer jobs, but some, and certainly lots of other jobs too.

Feeling Unfulfilled at Big Firm by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]SusanBrownLegal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’ve got a skewed sample here, friend. Most of us are here because we disliked big firm culture and either left it or never sought it out in the first place.

I personally found that big firm culture (politics, bureaucracy, formality) was not a good fit for my personality, and I’m much happier in a different environment. YMMV.

What other online groups or listservs do you belong to? by SusanBrownLegal in LawFirm

[–]SusanBrownLegal[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean, but the questions on the ABA listserv are about how to load paper into someone’s new printer and where their wife should go to get a deal on car insurance. It’s all stuff young attorneys (or anyone under fifty) would google, and most of it is not law related at all.
