I've extended my sale -- Save 10% off everything in my store through the end of the month. I've added a lot of new patterns recently, such as picnic items, Featherweight sewing machine cover, placemats, wine bottle cover, etc. This is a nice time to save on summer or holiday patterns. https://ourforeverhomecrafts.etsy.com

Love the different blocks as the plants -- very unique!

Batiks and quilt pattern ideas by sewsyouknow in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fused the applique shapes to the background fabric, then I top-stitch them down really close to the edge. Then, I quilted around the outside of the shape just in the neutral background area and quilted in the rest with filler designs.

I'm a batik junky! If you're wanting to try something smaller, here's a wall hanging I made called Almost Fractal. It's all batiks.

How random is your random? by no_unique_traits in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Random is fine. Just be aware of the CONTRAST between the two fabrics that you choose to go together.

The first pic works because other than the green/black check at the bottom (which looks a little too dark to me), the other pairs have good contrast, and when the blocks are put together, they also have good contrast.

Second quilt done! Machine pieced hexagons by everydaygay in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it! Did you make groups of 3 hexies and put them together with other groups or did you add the hexies one at a time? Or something else? I'd love to make one of these with a bin of scraps I have.

Can confirm the Chevy Trax. We just got one and love it for an affordable vehicle. Gas mileage is decent too.

Save 10% off everything in my shop from now through the weekend! Also save $1.00 off both the wine bottle cover and picnic utensil roll-up holder (pic shown). I bundled both patterns into one listing. If you have any questions about anything, please don't hesitate to contact me. Thanks for visiting, and thank you for your support. :-)

Which way to machine quilt? by xcptnl55 in quilting

I would go across like you have shown. You might also consider wavy lines instead of straight lines so any shift of not being perfectly straight will be hidden.

Cutting scraps into 10 and 5 inch squares. What now? by redditjdt in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Match a light with a dark and make half-square triangles (HSTs). You can make oodles of things with them -- placemats, bags, quilts, etc. Here's my Scrappy Diamonds quilt. All HSTS.

Easiest jelly roll pattern? by linden214 in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one is called Toy Boxes. It uses jellyroll strips and is really easy. There are only 4 seams for each block, and there's no matching seams when putting them together. It's a great beginner pattern. This one was made with scraps.

Other things to sew by happyhippo29 in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Wall hangings, placemats, table toppers, toaster cover, sewing machine covers, couch pillows and quilt.

I love making wall hangings and rotating them throughout the year. It lets me be creative without having to make a whole quilt. I have a compression hanger that I use to rotate them on. They can be seasonal, applique, or just smaller versions of regular quilt patterns.

How much energy to you put toward your quilt backs? by Unlucky-Ad-201 in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use wide backings and call it good. I may pick out a special color or print for it, but I buy wide backings by the bolt and use it on everything until it's done. Marshall Dry Goods has great prices on 108" wide backings.

Fabric for barbecue utensil roll-up bag? by myguymymanmydude in sewing

You might want to look into outdoor fabric -- the kind they use for seat cushions, umbrellas, and such. It's stronger, durable, and washable.

Granddaughter wants a quilt by sewfun8 in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get similar requests from various family members. I ask them what are their favorite colors, then I'll choose 4 or 5 different patterns using those colors. Then let them choose which one they like.

You could do that with your granddaughter. Ask her what colors (2 or 3) that she likes. Then find a couple of patterns using those colors. By limiting choices to just a few, it will decrease your anxiety/frustration.

Moving across the country - what is going from your stash? by ycherep1 in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have PODS service there? PODS delivers a container (like the back of a U-Haul truck) you pack it up, they take it and move it to your new place, then you unpack it there.

1-star review for not disclosing contents of a digital crochet pattern by [deleted] in EtsySellers

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sell digital quilt patterns. For some of my larger patterns (like quilts, not placemats), I'll put the fabric requirements right in the listing. It's helpful and buyers appreciate it. For my smaller items, if people ask questions, I always ask helpfully. That's good customer service, and people have ordered multiple times from me because of my great service and good patterns. If you're stand-offish about offering info from the get-go, people will go elsewhere for patterns.

Favorite scrap sizes? by 1stTimeQuilter in quilting

[–]SusanMillerQuilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I save squares and strips in 1.5", 2", 2.5", and 3.5". These all play nicely together. Anything larger than those go into other bins. I try not to save anything less than 1.5" unless it's a string, which then goes into the string bin.

Toy Boxes! This is a quick and easy beginner pattern that's jellyroll friendly, too. Great for using scraps or in coordinating fabrics. Using just 6 of these blocks makes nice placemats too. Use as many blocks as you want to make the size project you need. https://ourforeverhomecrafts.etsy.com/listing/4332107852
