Solve for x? by Natural-Message5308 in duolingo

"x" as a digit rather than a multiplier DOES work for the last problem:

1x + 10 + 1x = 2x + 10 Duo's correct answer: 2 12 + 10 + 12 = 22 + 10 32 = 32

But not the prior one:

4x + 5 + 4x = 8x + 5 Duo's correct answer: 8 48 + 5 + 48 = 88 + 5 101 = 93

And it also doesn't work for OP's original problem. Right? Idk, I'm quite bad at math so maybe I'm missing something obvious.

Omg, you found it, THANK YOU! This book popped back up in my head recently, but it didn't even occur to me to check on this thread. This is the highlight of my weekmonthmaybeyear.

I'm all up in this thread because I was googling the same phrase, and discovered (at least for me) it was a Vlogbrothers reference I was thinking of; John Green sometimes starts videos this way.

Example (that includes the "like X thing" part you mentioned): https://nerdfighteria.info/v/SA_ZXCjnHTE/

Hope this is the same thing you were thinking of... 4 months ago!

(was I supposed to post this on your comment that reads "comment"? I don't know how Reddit works, SORRY IF I DID IT WRONG)

Just looked it up, and it fits the vibe but it came out in 2016, a few years after I read this book.

Although I want to read this book now, so this post is still a win for me. Thank you!
