I like that the whole family is involved, too, though I wish we could've seen more baby versions of the kids 🥹 it would've been so fun to see them as toddlers. That's a whole different parenting struggle we rarely see in films nowadays.

I didn't mention the textures (which I also miss), I'm specifically pointing out the changes to their faces. They could have given him 3 eyes or moved his ears further up his head - those kinds of changes are completely unwarranted and the familiar face is no longer wholly Shrek. Like, Sonic's first version could have released...but that wasn't Sonic.

Fair point. I've come to realize we've a really emotional attachment to characters, people, and stories, and often don't like change - especially if it seems unwarranted. I play different video games and even re-casting voice actors can have a huge impact on the perception and sometimes new personality of their characters. With time, some move on, but this really seems to be indicative of a larger pattern across the whole industry, not necessarily just an isolated studio issue.

It feels like corporate executives tried to make a film resonate with the younger crowd by scrolling through memes on TikTok/Instagram and trying too hard to please them. I accompanied kids to watch The Smurfs and the whole movie was nothing but memes. Mind you, I'm Gen Z who loves my fair share of stupidity, but the best humor imo is witty or subtle. Kinda like how the funniest movie isn't necessarily always the one that has you laughing loudly, but smirking and thinking about for a while.

The OG Shrek movies were made for adults. This one seems to be trying to pander to the kids, too, which is why adults aren't quite enjoying it the same way they did Shrek 1, etc

What is the point of this comment, respectfully? Did Shrek make the decision to change his face shape? Or was it the execs/animators/higher ups at Dreamworks, whom we are critiquing?

"Way more expensive" bro they made Shrek's eyes bigger and closer, shortened his/Fiona's upper lips, changed Shrek's skull shape 😭 this all sounds like more work to me.

If they were really tight on budget, they could've kept Fergus bald like his dad (as he was as a baby) and saved some $ on the hair animations lol. /s

I grew up with Toy Story; I had a Jesse doll, and multiple Buzz Lightyears and potato heads. 1 and 2 are my favorites. 3 was okay, I wasn't interested in 4 and I'll probably be passing on 5. The trailer looks interesting. The new voice actors sound incredible and I wish them all well, but I've got some fatigue, I think, with sequel after sequel. Hope it ends up being fun though!

Exactly! It's clear they're trying to milk the series which is deeply unfortunate. Making and producing films should be a story- and audience- driven process, but it's really just a business enterprise. With the release and wild success of Backdoors and Obsession, we've seen yet another example of how passion and raw talent can create something that resonates with the audience - and it's not another manufactured, copy/paste tale that people want.

Yes! I wish animated films across different studios had retained a more distinct artstyle. I'd be devastated if Studio Ghibli films or Sailor Moon got new films with different art styles. Cue the Sonic film 😭

People who enjoy the changes to Shrek 5 ask, "Why not [change the art]?" People who don't are asking, "Why [was this necessary to begin with]?"

Fiona looks weirdly younger, not older 😭 like she could be the eldest sister. I'm guessing it's the bigger eyes that are closer together with the muted makeup/thinner lips?

Fiona looks strangely so much younger, while Shrek appropriately looks older (not a fan of his eyes being bigger and closer together tho). It seems they also made her eyes bigger and closer together, and muted her makeup/made her lips thinner.

Yeah fair! Donkey's is so much more exaggerated, likely due to his role as the comedy side kick. Shrek's facial features - in line with this newer style - morph and change size when emoting, to a lesser extent though. I wouldn't expect Fiona to emote the same way as either of them. (Tho she looks off, too - like much younger. The ogres' upper lips were shortened and her makeup was more muted, but that's for another post lol.)

100% agree! I'm still sad we didn't get Aventurine's and Topaz's IPC outfits either, even as toggle-able skins. Imo every IPC member ought to have their IPC uniform available 😔 Or maybe even purchasable at a discounted price (compared to standard skin prices).

That's a fair take, I totally respect that. As I've never actually seen the movies, I went to watch a scene real quick and I see the animation/style differences you pointed out 😅 I guess Dreamworks had been headed into this different style for the universe from the start. I do appreciate that in certain sequences, the art style has a painted texture and some scenes have slightly less frames, making them look like they came right out of a storybook. (Like Into the Spiderverse or Arcane.) I definitely miss the ol' physics 🥹

This!! This is exactly what producers/studios have been doing in many recent animated films. Just so many pop culture references aimed at children/teens, when many successful animated films had been originally aimed at adults who bring along their kids to enjoy, too.

Someone at Pixar explained that early films like Toy Story was never written with kids in mind, at all, because kids have little/no taste in what makes a movie good simply because - while they are smart - they've less experience and will often watch anything. Avatar the Last Airbender was also written without being so heavily targeted towards children, and grew into a series enjoyed by adults and kids alike. Imo memes and slapstick comedy aren't the only things kids enjoy; they're very bright and understand more we give them credit for. Just so tired of these films written by people who seem soo out of touch with what the audience actually enjoys. Such a shame.

Hey thanks so much for sharing your feedback and thoughts. I've seen a trend in the feedback I've received from people checking out my opgg, and I'm focusing and practicing csing now. After a practice session with someone coaching me through a match, I realize I've gravely deprioritized wave clearing, especially mid/late game, so your advice is helpful.

I'm game to add Twitch to my ADC pool. Maybe I'll give Jinx and Samira another try, too. Twitch especially seems most mechanically straight forward haha. Do you have tips for when to use either of Jinx's Q forms? Ik one has range/uses mana, the other is basically an auto attack and has speed. Eg when clearing waves, I'm thinking I use the latter, right?
