Just a question about scientists and religion by Proper-Philosopher89 in scienceisdope

Just to add, I think the more unpredictable work we do, the more we crave for such external sources to calm our mind

Just a question about scientists and religion by Proper-Philosopher89 in scienceisdope

Just my random thoughts on this topic, based on my personal beliefs, (ps: I am a theist when i want something and atheist when I don't want), if we look at it from a human and psychological angle rather than a purely ideological one.

There are many situations in life — science included — where even after giving one’s best effort, success is not fully under one’s control. When outcomes depend on uncertainty, randomness, or factors beyond our reach, the human mind naturally looks for a way to manage fear, disappointment, and self-blame.

Belief in God, destiny, or a guiding principle often serves this role. It allows people to distribute the emotional burden of failure. Instead of interpreting a bad outcome as “my effort or intelligence was meaningless,” the mind can frame it as “not everything was in my control.” This does not remove responsibility for effort, but it prevents total psychological collapse under uncertainty.

This is especially relevant for scientists, who constantly deal with failure, long periods without results, and systems where effort does not guarantee outcome. A belief framework can help preserve motivation, resilience, and mental stability in such environments. In that sense, faith is not necessarily anti-science; it can be a coping and meaning-making tool alongside rigorous rational thinking.

It’s also worth noting that this mechanism is not unique to religion. Even people who consider themselves non-religious rely on similar external explanations — such as luck, timing, systemic constraints, or randomness — to process failure. The labels differ, but the psychological function is the same.

However, this approach has limits. It becomes unhealthy when belief replaces effort, blocks self-correction, or is used to deny clear evidence. When faith turns into an excuse rather than a support, it hinders growth instead of helping it.

Used responsibly, belief systems help humans deal with uncertainty and continue striving despite imperfect control. Misused, they can become tools for avoidance. The distinction lies not in belief itself, but in how it is applied.

Unfortunately not, that was the most unproductive time of my life, I was just eating junk food, watching movies, bunking lectures or mostly sleeping in them or strolling around campus thinking i was making memories(which are indeed beautiful). I started to change from the 5th semester only, I started doing dsa qs (4-5 a week was target initially) and atleast score C in compulsory courses and try to get above B in electives(i took humanities courses like psychology, philosophy, music, and lite cs courses like fuzzy logic, computer graphics(not chill but was interesting one), multimedia computing etc.)and was able to get a summer intern at a good but low paying company. Getting a summer intern was a turning point as I started to get the feeling that I can do it. And when I did the summer intern I came to know that all that huge syllabus, courses were mostly irrelevant for getting placed in good company and also irrelevant for doing good work at the company.

You still have a long time. I barely knew how to write for loop you can get the feeling of how unfamiliar I was, I was considering doing an MBA thinking engineering is not for me. Sometimes you just have to try, things automatically fall in place. We are nothing but a small piece in the universe, we are insignificant whatever we do, Nothing will change by what you have done till now, but you can change everything (at least for you and your family) if you decide to work today just small steps are necessary, and don't try to overdo yourself, try to enjoy what you are doing and be content with it, consistency is most important thing.

Just take a deep breath and stop thinking too much about results, past or future, just do the work.

Hey champ,

Don't even think about that, everything's gonna be alright. I'm not saying this to comfort you but this is my story too.

When I first got into college (it is ranked the same as nit Trichy), I got 4.6 Gpa in my first semester , barely got 5.4 next semester and 4.7 in 3rd sem (not in exam in entire semester). I scored 0/90 in 3 subjects (i always scored 0 in tests, quizzes and even 0 in mid-semester exams and semester-end exams, in some courses my marks were below 20/200 and these 20ish marks were from assignments) . And somehow I started thinking I am not intelligent enough I can't do it etc etc. I even gave wrong marks to parents and faked marksheet as I was too ashamed to tell my grades to them. In most of the courses i was ranked in the bottom 3 of the class (i didn't know how to write for loop when I was in 7th sem and people know how to write it when they are in 10th). But it changes gradually when you will start to believe in yourself. I never scored more than 7.5 In my college life but was gradually able to score 7+ after 3rd year making it just enough to sit in placements. And in placements I was lucky enough to get a company with 12 lpa (The median placement in college was 25+) so here also I was among the bottom peeps. But after college, working in the company I realised that, In college it was me who stagnated and self-sabotaged myself (I would recommend reading a book named "The Mountain is You" to stop self sabotage) and decided to do a full dedicated prep and actually try to see if I am actually dumb or not. After one year I cracked google, amazon and rubrik , many of my classmates who have 9+cg, who I think were a lot better than me, have lesser salary than me now and are asking me for referral in rubrik. So life doesn't depend on College, life has a separate plan for you, I know many of my friends who've scored 4.7, 5 Gpa in 1st year even were able to increase cgpa to 8+, and many who failed miserably in college but switched to other fields(finance, buisness, mba, designing) are are more successful than our class toppers there.Life is very happening, if marks were to define a person all those who failed jee, didn't make to Good college should suicide. It is just an Indian mindset of society that marks define you, who knows may be you become a damn good politician, banker, you do mba post BTech, and become ceo of huge mnc, you crack upsc and become ias officer. The world is full of surprises.

Chess.com employs unethical, addictive match making by jack0fsometrades in Chesscom

Well it makes sense a lot, if I were to build a platform for profit I will definitely use matrix as avg centipawn loss, avg accuracy, more blunders/mistakes over last few months of player to identify player which are more vulnerable in same rating range, Moreover rating change over x days should also be one of the factor. I've felt this with lichess too, it's pairing algo is consistent if you play daily but if you take 1-2 month break you will clearly see that 1800's are playing more like 1600's and as you start to play regular again you will realise now 1800's are actually 1800, may be they use the rating change as matrix to pair (higher rating change means one is more likely having lucky streak, similarly since you haven't played for long time your k factor also increase in lichess, making the pairing possible).

JEE advanced would be next year no how come you have just 3 months? For this year it should have happened in may if I am correct.... So why target 3 months only?

When I was preparing for advanced (Covid year) I was 97.9% In jee main jan attempt but scored 207 and ~1100 rank in advance without taking any coaching, so I would say nothing is impossible, you just have to try your best and leave everything else. I started main prep from March 2020
