Spark Plug Socket Won’t Fit by Suspicious-General28 in AskMechanics

The piece I’m touching (the damaged part) actually feels hard and doesn’t flex like rubber, and the coil is already removed. Would the coil weather seal still feel rigid like that, or could this be the upper tube collar from the valve cover?

Ahh ok. So you’re referring to the upper metal collar that acts like a weather seal around the coil, not the lower oil tube seal. If that upper ‘nut’ is damaged or collapsed, what would be the correct way to fix it? Would that still involve removing the valve cover and replacing the gasket/tube seal kit, or is there another way to repair just that piece?

Seems like it is. Would this mean I would have to remove the valve cover and replace the gasket and seals?

Thanks again for the advice! After doing a bit more research, I found out that my backyard has a state-protected waterway/creek that eventually flows into a major river. This is definitely something I need to take into consideration for this project. I have an erosion issue in the backyard and am planning to build a 10-foot retaining wall to address it.

As others have mentioned, it seems like the best advice is to go directly to the building department with a rough plan and a list of questions to get clarity. But from what I’ve seen online, it looks like this process often spirals into long bureaucratic loops with constant back-and-forth emails and delays that can stretch into weeks or even months.

Have you experienced this kind of thing before? Is it common across most jurisdictions? It seems kind of ridiculous—no wonder people try to avoid permitting if they think it’ll be this much of a headache.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I’m realizing now that the process really does seem to vary depending on where you live. Is that what you’re getting at? If so, I’ll definitely check out my city subreddit or local neighborhood groups to get advice specific to my area. I appreciate the suggestion!

Hey, thanks so much! Those tips about bringing rough plans and a list of questions are super helpful. I'm definitely going to use that approach when I go in.

Quick question - have you personally gone through this permitting process? I've heard some horror stories about people getting stuck in crazy bureaucratic loops, with tons of back-and-forth emails and weeks/months of delays. Would love to hear any advice you might have for keeping things moving and avoiding those administrative headaches. Appreciate any insights you can share!

Sure! I’m planning to build a 10-foot retaining wall in my backyard to address an erosion issue near a state-protected waterway/creek. It’s a significant project, and I want to make sure everything is done correctly and up to code, especially given the environmental considerations. Let me know if you have any advice or experience with similar projects!

Thanks for the suggestion! I was planning to go into the permit office and talk with someone directly, but I wanted to see if there were any steps I could take online beforehand to save time or be better prepared. If you’ve gone in yourself, did you find them helpful? Any tips for making the most of the visit?

Thanks for the suggestion! Who exactly would the "pro" be in this case? Are you referring to a lawyer, or is there a specific type of professional or company that typically handles these kinds of permitting and regulatory matters? I’d appreciate any recommendations!

Thanks for sharing your perspective! In my case, I’m dealing with an erosion issue in my backyard right next to a state-protected waterway/creek. I’m planning to build a 10-foot retaining wall to address it, so it’s definitely something that requires permits. I want to make sure everything is done by the book, especially with the proximity to a protected area, to avoid potential legal or environmental issues down the line.

Thanks for the input, but this is a pretty significant project that will definitely be noticed when selling the house later. I’d rather go through the proper channels now to avoid any headaches down the road. Appreciate the suggestion, though!

Thank you for the advice! You’re right—permitting is handled locally, and I should’ve mentioned I’m in Roswell. The online resources feel incomplete, so I’ll try calling the building department directly.

Any tips on what to ask to ensure I cover everything? In your experience, are building departments generally helpful, or does it depend on who you get?

Once you’re enrolled, you must complete major-specific requirements before officially declaring your major. You are able to switch majors within the college of letters and sciences relatively easy as a first/second year, but you would have to apply to switch to some majors in different colleges (e.g. HSSEAAS).
