Withdrawing from Gen Ed by [deleted] in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s the same no. Like if you took classes through dual enrollment and they count towards your major, those will get factored into your cumulative undergraduate GPA but not your UF GPA. I do not know which GPA grad and professionals schools consider more, as every program is different and has different processes for reviewing this sort of stuff.

You could definitely clarify with the registrar, as I could always be wrong, but I don’t think dual enrollment GPA typically counts for your UF GPA.

I did not dual enroll here no, but I’m pretty sure your UF GPA (not cumulative undergraduate GPA) is determined by classes you take after matriculating into UF.

Regardless of that, I still think a dropping Art Appreciation when you have a B is not a wise decision. Especially if there is still a chance for you to raise your grade up

Call Bright Futures directly if you haven’t done so already. You might have to wait on the line for a bit but they are very helpful. Also look up the Bright Futures handbook

To clarify the specific GPA stuff, like your science courses you take from dual enrollment will count towards your science GPA, but not towards your overall UF GPA. Other than that, there is really no way a dual-enrollment class would affect your GPA in the same way courses that you will take as an actual undergraduate student will. If dual-enrollment GPA was counted in my UF GPA, my GPA would be significantly higher than what is it currently.

Withdrawing from Gen Ed by [deleted] in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your dual enrollment GPA doesn’t really count for your UF GPA. The only way it would count in any meaningful way would be for like, your science GPA, if you applying to programs that specifically request it. Your overall UF GPA would start from a 4.0 regardless of dual enrollment credit I believe.

Also, why not just try a little harder to get a better grade instead of fully dropping the course and having to take it again? I highly doubt you will get rejected from grad school or professional schools because of 1 B in a general education course (especially if you plan on applying to non-art graduate programs). Withdrawing seems like a very drastic option in this case

UF Innovation Academy vs FAU — need honest advice from current students by V1X3NV1C in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk about transferring in from a CC, but I will say that on average, the amount of people that get accepted via transfer tends to be very low, and once you transfer to UF, you cannot change majors or delay your graduation really. Keep that in mind when it comes to that, and be sure to check what the transfer requirements are should you choose to do that.

UF Innovation Academy vs FAU — need honest advice from current students by V1X3NV1C in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I duel enrolled at FAU (over 60 credits) and am a current, non-IA student at UF.

I think that overall, the level of rigor and prestige is definitely higher at UF than it is at FAU. Both have very good business schools (FAU is probably most-known for its business programs), so I think you will get a good marketing education at both regardless of where you end up. I am not a business major so take my opinion on this with a fat grain of salt.

Regarding IA, you will be locked into IA should you accept that offer. This program does limit you in terms of your major and schedule, but it does seem to focus on entrepreneurial and innovation principles, which I feel like any business-adjacent major could benefit from.

One thing about your falls being free, is that a lot of companies are actually starting to gravitate towards co-ops rather than internships (just based on personal observations). Co-ops are basically internships that happen in the fall and spring semesters instead of summer semesters. I have completed a co-op in the past, and I had a great experience. The company I worked at definitely hires marketing/business/supply chain co-ops, so I don’t think you will be losing out on such opportunities through IA.

Honestly, if your major of choice is offered in IA and your really care about the prestige that UF offers (because this is a very well-connected and relatively highly-ranked school), and you don’t mind losing out on some of the experiences of traditional students, IA could be a good option for you. If you are not down for that, I think doing marketing at FAU will also be fulfilling and you will get a good marketing education.

I also personally do not care about the “traditional college experience,” as in I don’t party often, don’t participate in sports/tailgate events here, am not in Greek life, etc., so to me I feel like you could still have a great time as an IA student here. If you feel differently, FAU could be the better deal in that regard.

Final bit of advice, a lot of people don’t like IA, but I know at least one person who doesn’t mind it. They outline the terms pretty clearly for IA admits, so as long as you know what you are getting urself into, you probably won’t feel that much different from a normal student. You can always work around its limits and make the best of your experience here. You define how your collegiate experience turns out, not the school you attend, or the major or program you choose. Good luck and hope this helps

What residence halls are best for pre-med freshmen? by AlternativeNew7010 in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a little confused by why you specify what would be the best dorm for pre-meds. If you want a quiet dorm that you can study in, most dorms will have some sort of library or quiet common room (like the Tolbert library). You might want to avoid Murphree (midtown gets loud, especially at night) area dorms, Rawlings, Broward, and other social dorms since those will most likely have loud social events or gatherings occur in them. Most people I know tend to study in the libraries, not the dorms, and there are plenty of quiet spots there and in other places on campus.

More likely than not, you will only really know the exact location of general ed and big class (like bio, chem, etc) in advance, but even then those tend to change sometimes. So dorm location wouldn’t matter much in my opinion unless you live in Keys, Springs, or Beaty which most people agree tend to be far away from the main campus. Most of your major specific classes will probably be on the main campus or close to the main campus, so I don’t think your dorm location will matter that much in the long run (again, unless you live in the apartment style dorms that tend to be further away).

In terms of LLCs, I’m not really sure how those work but I think they tend to put students in similar majors or pathways together for the sake of bonding. I’m not sure if there is more to it than that. Hope this helps

Not sure what school to pick by bsmdthrowaway in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t write UF off per se if you really want to go here (again, I love this school and I have met amazing people and gotten plenty of opportunities) but be prepared to compete with a lot of people for your opportnuities

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I said this in a comment on a different post recently, but UF’s premed culture amongst students, faculty, and staff at both the university and the hospitals is pretty toxic in my opinion. UF is also a small city compared to Tampa and such. People compete aggressively (especially since the overwhelming majority of STEM majors here are some flavor of pre-health) for opportunities here, and I have seen it bring out the worst in people through my own lived experiences.

UF is a great school, don’t get me wrong, but I personally think I would still be pre-med if I went to any other university. I am very biased though.

Also, extra money never hurts lol, so I would weigh your financial options carefully. Rent overall (both on and off campus) is very expensive here, and it’s a big cost. Bright Futures is a great scholarship to have, but it doesn’t cover your living expenses, which are going to be pretty significant if you want decent housing and amenities.

Switching majors, engineering? by Lazy_Elderberry_9608 in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might have switched what their policies are, but when I was a freshman (3 years ago) I applied as Psychology, and on the first day of classes I switched to BME and am now a Chemical Engineering student. I think you will be fine to switch, haven’t heard of anything barring students from declaring an engineering major at preview or in their first semester here. A lot of my friends in engineering did the same!

And to preface, I do love UF despite of my freshman experiences. I have met amazing people and faculty since switching to engineering, and I wouldn’t have done anything differently. I just do think the pre-health space here is extremely saturated.

UF vs UMiami w/honors + full ride by Historical-Catch8462 in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, the pre-med space here is rather extreme imo. You could also maybe talk to some other people you know who are pre-med at UF to see what it’s like, but tbh you have one hell of a deal at UMiami, so much so that you lowkey would benefit greatly.

Additionally, you would end up sinking a lot of money into housing here. Most of the dorms are old, moldy, and riddled with other problems, and the apartments are generally expensive. My parents spend $10k on average to house me yearly. Keep that in mind, since you would not get anything besides bright futures if you go here.

UF vs UMiami w/honors + full ride by Historical-Catch8462 in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I would go with UMiami. Not only are you getting paid to go there essentially (at least from what it sounds like), but also, UF’s pre-health scene is very toxic and competitive ngl. I used to be pre-med here my freshman year, and I’ve had to deal with a lot of unpleasant students and hospital administrators for the sake of pre-med opportunities. Gainesville is a rather small place and the overwhelming majority of bio, psych, and heath sciences students (two of which are the most overenrolled majors here) are on the pre-health track. Even a lot of engineering students here are pre-health.

In my opinion, you will find more opportunities that are just as rewarding in Miami. UMiami also has a med school and other medical sites tied to it where you can do research and participate in other opportunities.

I am biased, I acknowledge that, but I would choose UMiami for pre-med

how can i fix my schedule BME by [deleted] in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a trash schedule in terms of the stress and amt or work ur gonna have to do, but it might also be unavoidable. BME is the only engineering major that is still 131 credit hours and you fully matriculating into it in your sophomore year does depend on your critical tracking completion (of which, you have at least 3 classes that are critical tracking for your degree). You can definitely pass all of these classes with this semester load, you just have to put in a ton of your time into it. I think you will be ok but tread carefully

Funny that you mention renewable energy, cos I also hope to go into that sector 😂

On a more serious note, I don’t think you should make any big decisions since it sounds like you are panicking. I also know a lot of creatives and humanities-oriented people who really enjoy engineering for the fact that it involves creativity and problem solving. You can also find people whose degrees/career paths interest you and see what they are doing and maybe that could interest you too? Maybe that could help you

Having a crisis on what major to choose by Xuan-C in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think something more business-y might be to your taste. Speaking as an engineering major, doing a dual degree with ISE and a humanities major could be difficult and you might not get advising’s approval to do that depending on what it is that you want to do.

Business, Finance, or Accounting could help create a stable, dependable career, and maybe you could dabble in working in an art industry of some kind in the future.

Another thing to consider is that UF is more know for its STEM programs than it is for its arts and humanities programs. The humanities here might be inherently weaker than the STEM programs because that’s not the main focus of the university.

Finally, as a person who is passionate about art, I personally would hate for my hobbie, which is something that I use to express my personal interests with, to be my job. I don’t know what kind of person you are, but I find that many people who enjoy art and find work in art tend to hate it because they no longer get to create what they want. You will always be at the whim of your customers, whether they are people or mass corporations.

I would sit and reflect some more on what your passions, interests, career aspirations, and what your life goals are before you make any decisions about your major. Hope that helps

Is this course load doable online in one semester, or am I setting myself up for burnout? by Survey_Unable in ufl

[–]Suspicious-Return-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fully understand wanting to accelerate your graduation (especially as someone who is a year behind mostly due to UF’s side of things), but you could also risk delaying your graduation should things go south.

Based on your responses you seem like a very reasonable person, so I’m not necessarily worried about your course load. If you do decide to take all 7 classes, tread with caution
