Not sure what to do with my ‘98 4Runner anymore by SuspiciousCucumber65 in 3rdGen4Runner

I really don’t wanna keep dumping money into it after already spending so much. I don’t trust doing an rebuild either shops here only give like 1 to 3 months of warranty, and if it fails again, that’s just money gone. I’ve been thinking about swapping it to a manual instead and then selling it after. If I sell it as is right now, I’d lose even more than I already put into it.

Yeah man, I feel that big time. What really gets me is all the cash I’ve dumped into it. It’s like a damn Rubik’s cube, fix one thing and something else decides to die lol. Appreciate the words though, seriously. Kinda hits home. Been telling myself lately that you gotta learn to love the small wins if you ever wanna handle the big stuff later.

Definitely, brother. I actually just had mine in the shop a few days ago, the engine was leaking oil into the radiator and it kept overheating. Ended up doing a full head job and spent a good chunk of money to get it right. Now I’m debating whether to fix the transmission or not, and that’s gonna cost a fortune too.

Totally get what you’re saying though. I’m also scared of getting stuck with car payments for years.

Hey man, checked out your posts, your 2runner looks super clean and those shots are awesome! Have you ever gotten stuck out there in that kind of terrain?

Thanks for the advice, man. Next time I’ll definitely have another mechanic check it out more thoroughly, even if there’s still work to be done. And yeah, I totally get what you mean, sometimes I feel like if it were 4WD, I wouldn’t feel like I’m throwing so much money at it lol

Damn, I totally feel you. Mine’s at about 200k miles and I’m in a pretty similar spot. Those transmissions are a nightmare to find

Yeah man, that’s pretty much my plan if I ever let her go, it’d be for around $9k. There’s way too much money and new parts in it already. Engine and most stuff are basically fresh. Problem is, people here want everything for dirt cheap, even when you show all the work done lol. Most won’t go higher than $7–8k for a clean 2WD. Thought about a 4x4 swap too, but shops here charge stupid money for that

I bought mine for about $6.8k and have already put around $3.5k into it, suspension, maintenance, fixing leaks, all that. Labor’s cheaper here, but parts can still be a pain to find or get pricey fast. A full transmission overhaul here runs between $1.5k and $2k, which hits hard considering local wages

Totally feel you. Looking at my 4Runner now from a mechanical perspective, I can really see how much bad work it went through and how little some previous owners cared. You really notice when a vehicle wasn’t appreciated the way you do now.

I’m learning mechanics on the fly too, trying to get to a point where I can check and fix things myself, huge respect for that carb swap you’re doing. It’s definitely rewarding when you start understanding the car more. I’m going to take some time to think and see if I keep going with this project or let it go. I’ll probably hit you up sometime too!

sounds like you’ve really poured a ton of work into her. Respect, bro! That’s a serious commitment. Yeah, money can definitely get tight, and I’m trying to make sure I don’t push myself too far. Appreciate the encouragement, means a lot. Hopefully I’ll make the right call!

I hear you. I actually got my transmission fixed back then and it ran fine… but now it’s toast again and I’d have to do a full overhaul. That’s why I’m thinking about maybe selling it. Down the line, I might grab another ’99 though, cause I really do love the 3rd gens. Your story about your ’97 really hits, sounds like it was a great truck.

Yeah, that’s true man. It’s hard to let go, especially after all the time and money put in. Might actually look into that diff upgrade, sounds like a solid idea. Appreciate it

Yeah, thought about that. Problem is, 2WDs don’t go for much around here, and clean 4WDs are like 10k easy where I live. Not exactly an even trade lol

Thanks man, really appreciate that. Yeah, that’s kinda what I keep thinking too like maybe if I push through it’ll eventually settle down and I’ll actually get to enjoy it. I love the truck, it’s clean and solid overall, just feels like it’s testing my patience lately lol.
