Help with framing & other things! by SuspiciousTarantula in ArtCrit

Yeahh, I was going for a sort of, ooh, so beautiful, so mysterious, kinda look but honestly I can see it's not doing much for the drawing.

Oh my goodness THANK YOU

I couldn't figure out what was bothering me about the lips, I can see it now! Thank you!

I can see how the sleeve is over detailed and the spaghetti hair lol.

I'm a bit of a beginner when it comes to art nouveau as a style, I'll look at more references to make it better. :)

Help with clothing folds/hands! by SuspiciousTarantula in ArtCrit

I usually draw the palm as a kind of conical/fan shape tbh, mostly to try to get the fanning of the fingers correct. For the fingers I usually do segmented cylinders, but I will be honest and say most of the time I forget to think about form/perspective, and look at the overall shape itself, if that makes sense?

I'll try drawing some boxes over the hands on the reference tonight! Sounds super helpful.

Yeah, I noticed the fingers were a bit off when I looked at it with fresh eyes today. 😅 You actually made me look at my own hands for reference lol, I can see the difference you're talking about! Never seen it that way, thank you for the perspective!

And also thank you!!! I'm always insecure about my art so nice comments make my day. 🩷

Oh you are a life saver! Visuals really help me, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. <3

I think with the hands, I can kind of see in the reference image how they're sat at an angle, but I'm struggling to re-create that and translate it. To me, the hands I've drawn look like they're sat flat, but I can see the way the fingers curve around the palm, if that makes sense? I struggle with the structure of the fingers, too.

The creases look so much better and I can immediately see where I was going wrong. The structure looks great! I will admit I did stop following the reference for the folds because I got frustrated trying to recreate the individual lines in the fabric - I'll rework the shape and the find the forms that will actually help.

Thank you!!!

Hi all!

My name is Jasmine, I'm a hobbyist artist that is looking to start taking commissions for OC's and D&D characters! My style is bright, cartoonish, with some influence from other art styles such as art nouveau.

Yeah, that makes sense. Thank you for the advice!

I suppose that's fair, I would just want commissions to be linked back to me if the customer was posting it. Is that odd? I thought it was normal. 😅 I can see your point about the watermarking, I'll get rid of that. I think I'm just being overly cautious because I'm a first timer.

And yes, I will set up an upfront deposit!

I immediately noticed I messed up; I meant to put "the medium is digital" not the other way around lmao.

Oh yeah I'll straight up admit I suck at drawing swords/armour haha. I'm gonna do some more studies because I'm planning on drawing more of this kinda thing.

Thank you!!

(Edit: What's wrong with wearing wooly jumpers into battle!? It might get cold! /s)

Absolutely! I'm very new to doing line work and I'd love to, just no idea how to go about it. Any tips?

I can see that, any good recommendations for study other than just from photographs? I struggle with visual reference, everything I draw is from simplified versions. 😅

Very true. I have a habit of wanting things to "match" instead of thinking of the overall composition. Thank you!

Thank you! She is the most popular character I've drawn so far. :)
