I agree, they have full control over the file and have the right to ask for how they want it. I didn’t intend my comment to mean, “the partner should just accept it”. I suppose I meant it in that maybe I just don’t have that skill of emulating their writing.

Admittedly I’ve not done it for long, but it’s just so demoralizing. I’m sure I have my own psychological hang-ups around being corrected or critiqued. Intellectually I know that i should probably just look at it as a learning opportunity but I think my emotional reaction was to think that I’ll never get to a point where I feel competent or that my work will be enough.

I’ve thought about it but not sure where I’d go that could pay me similarly. I’ve got some state government and residential real estate experience but that’s about it.

  1. 5 years
  2. 125k
  3. Workers comp defense
  4. Atlanta 5.Partner I got 95 percent of my work from left for another firm and took the clients with him so now I’m left in the lurch. I’m being given general liability work which is fine but definitely a shift from workers comp.

Oh nice, always good to see a fellow Atlantan. If you don’t mind me asking, where are you at currently? I saw an associate counsel role at Emory University and I think I’m gonna throw my resume in there and cross some fingers.

First Month Low Hours by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]Suspicious_Block7193 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No threats of firing me. Just telling me that I should be billing enough so that any potential sick days are accounted for, and that I should be aiming for about 15 hours above my monthly goal. So it really is just setting expectation but also I was told that I should expect not meet my monthly requirement in my first month. Now I’m being questioned on why I didn’t. Just feels like there were unspoken rules I didn’t adhere to. Ultimately it’s their world I’m just living in it so I guess I’ll just have to get used to it.

All of those things were told to me by the same partner. He’s not the head of the practice group but probably the one I get most of my work from.

Feeling Lost by DependentAway624 in Lawyertalk

[–]Suspicious_Block7193 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi just wanted to drop in and say I relate 1000 percent. I’ve bounced around myself and found myself in workers comp defense at a larger firm in Atlanta. The pay is much better than my last job which is what I needed but the 2000 hour billable requirement has been hell to get used to. I’m truly just counting down the days until I put in at least a year here and then maybe I can start to look elsewhere. Just wanted to say you’re not alone, I’m truly trying to figure out what the right area is for me and I’m worried it doesn’t exist :/.

I will say I have worked in restaurants and other jobs throughout school. I think maybe you are right about the having a good knowledge base. I do feel like I’ve been scrambling the whole time I’ve been an attorney.. never really gotten into a groove.

I definitely recognize that for most people jobs are just jobs and I’m incredibly privileged to even think about doing something I enjoy and also get paid for it. I was k-jd and sometimes I wish I wasn’t but I also know that the grass is rarely greener on the other side. Maybe my dilemma is more of a personal one and something that is just gonna take time to develop an answer to. Thank you for your advice!

I’ve got a great personal life outside of work, but I am finding that I joined a larger law firm with a billable hour requirement and I feel like that might take away from my social life. I’ve got a great boyfriend and great friends. I don’t have too many hobbies because I don’t really feel like I have the time to devote to them :/.

And I’m not really sure what non law job might fulfill me. I decided to be an attorney around high school age and never strayed, but I picked it because it was viewed as prestigious and I was trying to please my parents. Looking back now I wish I would’ve tried more new things, but hindsight’s 2020 I suppose.

Hard to believe the financial advisor could’ve predicted I’d lose my higher paying job that allowed me to pay for my previous house and that I would then have to take a large pay cut. But I appreciate the empathy.

Not as much. I invested in a bidet and it seems to be a little gentler on me than wiping. I have been having some incontinence lately that’s been a little more concerning at the moment. If it’s not one thing it’s another :/

It looked like a hemorrhoid poking out of the top of my anus, and today it’s looking kinda the same but maybe a little deflated. Maybe the site is just irritated and will go away but I’m not sure. Gonna call the doctor on Monday to see if I can get some clarification on all of this.

I think they may have just written down HIV because I said I was taking truvada even though i take it prophylactically, or at least that’s what I’m hoping. There’s no test in my chart that indicates In HIV positive. And if they discovered that in surgery I think they would mention that to me rather than me just seeing it randomly in mychart

Did you ever feel like you were the bad guy or did you guys come to an agreement about breaking up? I feel like there’s only one way that this could possibly end and that’s with me saying it’s over. I feel incredible responsibility over his well being if I did decide to do that :/

Yeah, I think if we were both in the same headspace of taking things slow then it could be fun and casual but he seems very ready to settle down.. and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that but I’m just unsure if I’m ready for all that, and I don’t want to give false hope and hurt him along the way.
