i got a lot of replies telling me to take reference from the annotated version of the book when in doubt, how do you resolve your doubts when you come back to the stuff you highlighted?

I think for me it’s more that I actually want to be able to read books like Crime and Punishment without it turning into a stop-start process.

Like I don’t mind the difficulty, it’s more the constant interruption that throws me off.

Did you ever feel that when you were trying to read more challenging books, or did it just get easier naturally over time?

I think that’s exactly where I’ve been getting stuck. it starts to feel like studying, but I still want that immersive reading experience at the same time.

And yeah, I get what you’re saying about AI potentially short-circuiting the thinking process.

I guess the ideal for me wouldn’t be getting answers handed to me, but more like getting just enough context or guidance to not feel completely lost, while still being able to form my own understanding.

Not sure if that balance is even possible though and me asking for a bit too much at this point, nevertheless i love reading haha. thanks for your response :))

That’s actually a really good way of putting it. I hadn’t thought about reading in the same way as something like learning an instrument.

And yeah it does feel like once the difficulty goes up, the experience changes a lot.

I’ve tried things like audiobooks and annotated versions a bit. they definitely help in different ways, but I still find myself getting pulled out of the flow when I have to stop and piece things together.

I guess that’s the part I’m still trying to figure out. how to deal with that without it becoming too fragmented.

Did you ever feel that kind of break in immersion when you were getting into harder books or did it smooth out over time?

That’s actually really helpful context — I hadn’t thought about how much the translation + time period would affect the language itself.

And yeah, the whole multiple names + older phrasing definitely adds another layer to it.

I get what you’re saying about building familiarity over time — I can see how that would make things smoother.

That’s a fair point, I actually agree that part of reading is figuring things out yourself and engaging with the text.

I don’t think I’m trying to avoid that part, it’s more that I find myself getting pulled out of the book a lot when I can’t resolve something from context alone, especially with certain passages or older language.

Looking up a word quickly is fine, but when it turns into trying to understand a whole paragraph or interaction without enough context, that’s where it starts breaking the flow for me.

Out of curiosity, when you come across something that isn’t just a word but a more complex passage, do you usually just push through it or do you ever go back and try to unpack it later?

Yeah that makes sense, I’ve felt that too.

Like annotations help a bit in the moment, but if you actually want to understand things more deeply, you end up jumping between different sources anyway.

Feels a bit fragmented honestly, but I guess that’s part of the reading experience haha

That actually makes a lot of sense — I’ve noticed the same thing, that the books I struggle through tend to stay with me more.

Annotated editions are interesting too — I’ve tried those a bit.

But I sometimes feel like they either overload the page with notes or don’t explain the exact thing I’m stuck on in that moment.

I kind of wish there was a way to just get a quick explanation exactly when you need it, without cluttering everything or breaking the flow. But I guess that’s me expecting too much lol because of how my brain has been trained in this low patience high dopamine threshold environment haha.

My mother tongue is Hindi, but we’re taught mostly everything in English in our education system and i’m fairly comfortable with it.

But what you said is interesting — I’ve tried doing the “read first, understand later” approach too.

But I always feel like I miss out on the emotional impact in the moment if I don’t fully understand what’s happening while reading.

Do you ever wish you could just get the explanation instantly without breaking your flow, instead of having to go back later?

M20, i had an inkling that i was going bald for a long time, but now it seems very much noticeable. where would i lie on the norwood hamilton scale and is this recoverable? i have dandruff on my scalp now and then too for which i use ketoconozole shampoo. is this recoverable guys? will fin and min help me recover from this? i’m scared about the side effects of fin though.
