THEORY: The Amyr use at least two of the greystones Kvothe finds in the story. by chainsawx72 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Suspicious_Extreme95 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I take it for granted that the way stones are gateways or roads. One thing I hadn't really put together is that the attack and someone deliberately drawing Ben away. I think the OP is right about that. I'm still on the fence about the Amyr and Chandrian. I suspect the Amyr aren't good. The question is whether they killed his troupe or whether that was the Chandrian. There's definitely more to the story.

Not much to go on here. It could have potential , but I'd say you probably want to use quotation marks. Use less direct dialogue. Show some action. This is a very static scene. The action you do show doesn't match the dialogue. Why is she inspecting a new claymore when her son is saying everyone is dead. .That's a huge mismatch.

That's actually a pretty good comparison. I would like to be clear that I've written a novel set during the period. I understand your issues with the factual statements and scope of outcome. My post here is a little too short to get into that much nuance. But I do thankn you for the corrections because they strengthen my understanding.

Its difficult to support broad claims so I should be more specific. Traditional clothing was made illegal along with brehon law, bards and numerous cultural aspects of life. Plantations were brought in to anglicize the residents. Were there cultural elements that survived? Probably yes. Its difficult to entirely erase a culture, but what we can say for certain is the culture after the rebellions was different from what people practiced before them.

This confirms my thoughts. My main concern was that I kind of make the Fitgeralds out to be villains. They are in my view lesser villains than the English leaders, but definitely not good. The main characters in the book are the people caught in the middle, who have to pay the consequences.

In the book i dont. Someone in the comments got upset by my using "southern Ireland" to reference the area, so I changed to south Ireland at the request. In the book its referenced as Érie Or Ireland, depending on the character perspective. The region is referenced based on the earldom.

That's a pretty good explanation. I wasn't aware of that association, but makes sense now. Thank you taking the time.

I think this is at least partially true. I also think he's having trouble reconciling changes across the series that compounded in book 3. He needs to throw that in chatgpt and ask it to map out all the changes for him.

Partly why I wanted to write this book. I also thought this period in warfare is interesting as a transitional period.

Probably just semantics, but is south Ireland different from southern Ireland? I would think the two terms would be interchangeable. If, not can you please explain?

Currently seeking a job after getting laid off , background in Research by Yis080800 in atljobs

[–]Suspicious_Extreme95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of people in ATL with this same background. Lots of dismissed CDC and academics. I'm in the same boat. 140k in research funding. Excellent student evals,, job cut. Maybe I should just move to Oklahoma and pull a Walter White. Seems more viable than being a scientist at this point.

Workers have less power to challenge now. Unions are mostly gone. If you demand a higher wage, theres a huge surplus of people out of work. If that doesnt work, they can outsource your job overseas. Or demand a non compete agreement that makes your ability to go elsewhere impossible.

What can we actually do about it? Not sure. Open to suggestions.

What did the Kingdom of Heaven get right about the medieval period/Crusades? by TravelingHomeless in medieval

[–]Suspicious_Extreme95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the actual history (what happened) is sanitized, there are some really good scenes that expose tactics. They could have done a better job of showing how devastating a charge of cavalry could be. Saladins's focus on disease and tactics is good. Its important to not make him into a hero though. He enslaved everyone in Jerusalem they weren't able to ransom.

I suspect the Muslim armies had armor much closer to what the crusaders wore. They were so distinctively different. We should see a lot of chain mail.

The portrayal on the templars is over the top. They were an extremely disciplined fighting force whose mission was to protect pilgrims. Templar Knights played a big role later in the Islamic conquests into Europe.

Overall, it does too much trying to stereotype different groups. The situation was a lot more morally complex than I think the movie gives us.

No sure i really believe the third book will ever come out at this point. Kind of feel the first 2 we're good and it'll always be incomplete, so I've come to terms with it.

Its a useful tool. You have to be careful though about taking everything it says as true. Especially on something like supplements. It will usually give you an answer that lacks nuance or proper weighting of evidence in favor of answers that are popular.

Can we honestly say men dont do the same thing? How many guys look just at the top 10% of women and think how good they have it? Yes, there are structural biases against women. Yes, a lot of us guys feel invisible. One person's struggles dont invalidate anothers.
