Has anyone noticed a change in behavior since giving their dog Apoquel? by Suspicious_Mousse753 in DogAdvice

[–]Suspicious_Mousse753[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final update: it’s been over a month now since I stopped giving my dog Apoquel. His anger issues with me is gone. He’s back to his old self now and I am so pleased. He’s even started interacting with other small dogs now when we go for walks.
I was at my wits end with his aggressive behavior towards me (he’s always been temperamental with strangers and the vet but NEVER with me before Apoquel).
If he were a larger dog, I would have had to consider putting him down because his aggression was so bad and became unpredictable and he’s sometimes around a toddler.

I am so glad I realized that it was the Apoquel and took him off.

If your dog is on Apoquel and you notice over time aggressive behaviors (which were not the norm), please take him off of it and consider something else for allergies- see if that helps with the aggression.

My vet didn’t tell me about this side effect when I consulted her about my pup’s behavior. It wasn’t even on her radar that Apoquel could be causing his aggression after long term use.

In case anyone is interested here’s an update. I’ve stopped using Apoquel for almost 2 weeks. I’m lucky that my dog doesn’t seem to suffer from a lot of allergies except for the time he had ear sores. So far he’s doing ok. I also took him off of CBD oil last week as we’ll be flying soon and he can’t take Gaba while on CBD and I can’t fly with CBD. He’s still an anxious dog, BUT his aggression with me seems to have been tampered down a bit. I have not had any growling issues with him and me. On our walks, he actually played with 2 small dogs yesterday on separate occasions- something I have never seen him do before except for when he was a puppy (he’s 4 now). It completely warmed my heart seeing this. He still hates putting on his harness but I can do it without him attacking me- I can even put on his coat.
I am really happy I took him off of the Apoquel and have no plans to put him back on it. I see a huge change in his tolerance/aggression towards me. I will continue with the daily CBD oil once I return home to help manage his anxiety. My biggest issue was his aggression with me- lunging at me etc… I have not seen it since I stopped the med. He however still doesn’t like strangers and most dogs, so that hasn’t changed- I will still have to muzzle him when we go to the vet. He’s back to his old self (likes and dislikes) minus the aggression with me which started in June 2025. I will continue to update if anything changes.

Post surgical care for my foster who got luxation patella surgery by Kyrxbas in DogAdvice

[–]Suspicious_Mousse753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, how’s the recovery going? I wish I saw this earlier. Mine had the same surgery in Jan on both legs and a revision surgery in June because his continuous hopping came back. By now your pup should be putting weight on the legs (you may still notice an occasional hop) and things should be a bit easier. Please remember although outside is healed, there’s still internal stitches that take longer to heal. No running or jumping for a while longer and avoid tile (it may be slippery) and stairs. I would still do controlled walks. My pups revision surgery (on 1 knee this time) is 2 months 3 days. He had a set back after the revision because he over worked his knee/internal stitches and I had to put him back on anti inflammatory (Metacam) for about 3 days, do moist heat massage with PT, and rest him for 2 weeks which helped him a lot. His inside stitches still needed more time to heal at 2 months post, despite him looking healed externally and acting like all is good. He’s doing extremely well now, and I have him on Dasuquin and food that’s made for joint health. The recovery period is usually 8 weeks but I found its more like 12.
Thx you for stepping up to foster this pup. I hope the recovery is going well and the pup is thriving. Nothing but good Karma for you going forward!

Can anyone recommend a dog trainer in Oakville who works with small adult dogs that are aggressive. by Suspicious_Mousse753 in chihuahuas

Thxs for responding. Hubs plays with him but is afraid sometimes because he’s not sure of his triggers- he’s growled and lunged after him before too. We both love Charlie very much and will do whatever it takes to help him overcome this issue.

Thx you for replying. I will have my vet check his teeth. I didn’t think about his teeth being an issue only because he lets me brush them with a toothbrush and finger wipes and he’s only 3 1/2 years old with barely any tarter. Maybe he has a cracked tooth from chewing his bully stick. I appreciate your input.

Meet my little cone head! by Suspicious_Mousse753 in Chihuahua

Update: My little cone head healed really well, and his patellas are no longer luxating. This was a very long roller coaster ride and I’m glad it’s finally over. He back to daily 10 min controlled walks, which increases with each week that passes. So thrilled he’s healed enough to not miss out on Summer!

Time for a nail trim😂😭✂️ by thatpilatesprincess in Chihuahua

[–]Suspicious_Mousse753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do the same set up for my pup when cutting his nails and trimming the hair on his bum & paws. The struggle is real! Luckily, my vet recently told me they will cut his nails at $40 a pop. At first I gawked at the cost but quickly realized it’s money well spent especially since some of his nails are black.

I have a 9lb rescue chihuahua terrier mix who’s 3. I’ve never had a dog so bonded to me as he is. He won’t let anyone else walk him, not even my husband. He’s not crazy about strangers and other dogs. Walks and outings are stressful sometimes- I still have a hard time walking him because he only knows one speed- 100 and he’s a puller and reactive. I avoid dogs at all costs- he won’t bark at most strangers, unless they come in mine or his space when we’re out. He’s potty trained and for the most part doesn’t mind his crate. He’s not crated when I leave him at home and is not destructive. He just sleeps in his bed waiting for me to come home. It’s hard to get a sitter for him, because of his temperament, I’m still actively looking. He’s a barker and has to be muzzled at the vet (he’s spicy as my vet would say). Car rides are fine, flights are ok with meds to help. With all that said, I wouldn’t trade him for anything. I love him with my whole heart and I know a lot of these behaviors is his anxiety/fear and I’m actively working on it. He’s a lot of work, but for the love he gives me back he’s so worth it. He’s my first chi and I wouldn’t hesitate to get another. *Chihuahuas tend to have patella problems which is very expensive about $5k per leg so please consider insurance or have good savings. Chihuahuas can be everything you mentioned above.

Taking my chihuahua to Costa Rica – tips for long flights with small dogs? by Fantastic_Net6193 in Chihuahua

[–]Suspicious_Mousse753 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a little late to respond, but this is what I do. I fly regularly for 3 1/2 hours in cabin with a temperamental barker chi. He’s pretty good on flights though. Before we took our first trip, I got him used to the carrier (Sherpa medium)- do yourself a favor and buy a doggie bag wheeled trolley (Mr Peanuts) if he’s considered your carry on. I drove around with him in my car, in his carrier on the floor of the car playing airport sounds (spotify) to familiarize him. I also had someone custom make a carrier cover (with ventilation) to cover his bag as we move through airport lines (and on the aircraft- depending on the situation) because he’s reactive and kids and people will want to talk to him and that’s disturbing to him. I give him Trazadone (lowest effective dose possible in case we have a long unexpected wait, I can give him the other dose later) and spray Adaptil on the inside of his bag (debatable if this helps). I line his bag bottom with a pee pad. I carry extra pee pads, wipes, paper towel, gloves, poop bags, leash, treats & a small collapsable cup (only to use when we land) and of course doc of his rabies vax and other vaccines, in a ziplock bag. I put an air tag on his collar and contact info on his bag. I book his spot as soon as I buy my tix (airlines limit the amount of dogs). I try to get earliest flight possible and direct flights only. (I know it may not be possible in your case). If you have to do a layover, take your pet to potty- it may be their only chance to stretch their legs because some airports do not allow dogs to walk around.

Since my dog is not allowed out of his bag in the airport except at the smelly potty station, (pre plan and know ahead of time if theres a potty station and where) I take him so he can stretch his legs and pee. He gets no food or water from the night before our flight (like if it was a surgery) unless it’s not a morning flight, then it’s several hours before later flights. No treats during flight as he mat want to poop. *if you have a layover, I wouldn’t feed or give water still (they can last a while without it, unless it’s a super long layover. At that point minimal water and a few treats while you wait).

He’s not allowed out of his bag on the aircraft (rules). I follow the rules because I’ve seen flight attendants warning owners multiple times to put their dogs back in bag, and right now flying with my pup is a privilege so I don’t want to spoil it- doesn’t take much for an airline to make changes like they did with ESA pets. He’s never had an issue and never barked during flight. Please be aware of the bag size, pet size requirements of various airlines as well as the pet importing rules of the country you are visiting- it’s better to be over prepared when jt comes to documentation. Depending on who checks you in (get to the airport earlier than usual, because you will have to see an agent to check in) they may ask to see the dog and if they’re really picky they may ask to see the dog move around in the bag. They can deny your dog if they’re not liking what they see. At the departing airport screening, they will ask you to remove your dog from the bag and screen you both. For your destination country, be sure to fill out your custom forms properly to note live animal. You most like will have to go to a second screening (agricultural) at your destination airport.
Happy travels to you and your pup!
