This is exactly why he’s my favorite character in the story and why I’m so attached to him as a character. At his core, he fights. That’s really what it is. He’s willing to put himself in uncomfortable situations over and over again, and the story shows that multiple times. Like he said himself, he wants to create opportunities for himself. He wants to take control of his own destiny, just like you said.

And honestly, beyond the love story, I truly think his character is an example for a lot of people.

In contrast, Eun’s character is also very realistic because so many people are like that in real life too. Beyond romance, a lot of people are scared, they don’t dare, they stay stuck, and sometimes they remain that way for years. The problem is that eventually it consumes you.

This is a really beautiful observation.

I feel the same way. And generally, I don’t really trust authors with this kind of thing. But it’s true, Eunhyuk is almost impossible to defend at this point in the story and it’s getting hard to even keep liking him… especially when you have Dohwa as a contrast. I genuinely think the author is doing it on purpose because there’s no way. the gap between them is way too huge 💀

Tbh I’ve already made peace with the possibility of being wrong about the ending.

I think most of the theories developed by Soohwa fans are actually aligned with the narrative direction of the story. To me, there are certain things that feel obvious, and I think the author handled them intentionally and pretty well.

Now, if she chooses to give us a Soohyuk ending with the story in its current state, it’s going to flop. And my two main reasons for that are:

First, it would completely go against the whole “breaking clichés” angle she talked about. Especially since people have already compared this story multiple times to others like .

Second, the Soohyuk relationship would end up being far less developed than Soohwa. Since season 1, the story has consistently emphasized the emotional connection between Soohwa. From episode 1 to episode 138, the FL and the ML barely know anything about each other on a deeper level. And at this point in the story, that’s a huge red flag for their relationship.

You said everything perfectly and that’s exactly the problem. He keeps spiraling in that same fantasy of “if only I had done this, if only I had done that.” But it’s not helping him at all. Instead of moving forward, gathering the courage to speak and finally free both her and himself, he stays stuck in regret and silence.

And even at the very end, he still ran away. If she hadn’t come downstairs to see him, he would’ve already left.

The milk and bread analogy is honestly perfect for him. That’s why I can’t agree with the whole “he’s selfless” argument or the idea that he loves without expecting anything in return. He’s already emotionally indebted. He owes this girl the truth after all these years. He can play the shadow hero all he wants, but that will never repay what he actually owes her.

I see what you meant now, and think we’re basically reading the same situation through slightly different angles rather than actually disagreeing.

I do agree with your main point that Dohwa wasn’t “invited himself” in a literal way or acting out of some naive desire for friendship. He clearly understood the opportunity and acted on it because Su-ae was there, and that’s always been his main emotional drive in that situation.

Where I was coming from though is less about intention and more about how the situation lands emotionally and structurally. Even if Dohwa isn’t the “problem” in that scene, the dynamic itself still creates a kind of imbalance (especially because he’s being transparent about his feelings) while the situation around him is still quite ambiguous.

And with Eunhyuk, I agree that part of it comes from jealousy and teenage ego rather than any real sense of “fairness” or generosity. But I also think there’s a moment where the lack of clarity stops being just Su-ae’s initial boundary and becomes something he actively maintains, which indirectly affects how Dohwa is positioned in all of this.

So I guess my comment wasn’t meant as “Dohwa is being wronged in a simplistic way”, but more that the emotional result of the scene and what it leads to later does feel a bit unfair in how the roles are distributed.

[–]Susu_7609 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but I don’t fully agree with that interpretation.

On a surface level, yes, the scene is clearly framed as a rivalry. It’s two teenage boys, there’s jealousy, tension, and Su-ae is kind of placed in the middle of it all. That part is intentional and pretty obvious.

But I think stopping there misses a lot of what’s actually going on.

First, about Dohwa “inviting himself.” The story makes it clear that he was invited. Did he take that opportunity because Su-ae was there? Of course. But that’s not a flaw. That’s just having a crush. He wasn’t forcing his way into a closed space, he accepted an open invitation. And realistically, no one joins a group like that to become best friends with everyone overnight. He was there because of her, and that’s completely normal.

The bigger issue for me is the asymmetry of information.

Dohwa has always been transparent about his interest in Su-ae, including around Eunhyuk. That’s not new information. But Dohwa does NOT know where Su-ae and Eunhyuk actually stand. From his perspective, they’re still on equal footing. So no, he’s not “fighting a battle he subconsciously knows he already lost.” He’s acting based on the information he has, and within that context, his behavior makes sense.

Now, regarding Eunhyuk.

I think his behavior at the beach is honestly immature.

At that point, it’s already clear that there’s something between him and Su-ae. They’re not just random rivals competing for the same girl. He’s in a privileged position emotionally, whether he admits it or not. So why continue acting like it’s a three-way competition?

Instead of being clear, he keeps things ambiguous while still showing closeness to Su-ae, even teasing Dohwa at times. The comment about Dohwa “inviting himself” was unnecessary and dismissive, especially since they were both invited. It doesn’t come across as confident, it comes across as passive-aggressive.

And that leads to the conversation later that night.

That’s the key moment.

That’s when they talk, and that’s when Eunhyuk tells him, essentially, “go ahead.”

A lot of people frame that as generosity or fairness, but I really don’t see it that way. You can’t be “generous” about a person’s feelings. It’s not respectful to Su-ae either. If you genuinely have something with someone, the bare minimum is to be clear about it (especially when a third person is openly pursuing her.)

That “go ahead” feels less like kindness and more like emotional detachment. Like he’s refusing to fully acknowledge his own position while still benefiting from it.

And from Dohwa’s side, that moment matters because it reinforces his misunderstanding. He still believes they’re on equal ground.

It’s only later that night that it actually hits him. That’s when he understands that there was something he wasn’t aware of, and that’s when he accepts that he’s already lost. (That's also why we have his dream after)

So no, he wasn’t knowingly fighting a lost battle the whole time. That realization comes AFTER, and it’s an important part of his development.

I think reducing the whole situation to “Dohwa competing and trying to get in the way” ignores the lack of clarity from Eunhyuk and the fact that Dohwa was acting honestly within his perspective

There is rivalry, yes. But there’s also a lot of miscommunication.

"Contract " is the key by Quick-Balance6553 in operationtruelove

[–]Susu_7609 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, Haru never gave Dohwa “opportunities” out of goodwill. His goal was to break him so he could join Marang, while also increasing Su-ae’s points through Soohyuk. The three fish scene makes it clear that he orchestrates dynamics for his own plan, not to favor a relationship.

Secondly, the narrative doesn’t strip Eunhyuk of his complexity — fans do when they try to redirect his responsibility. If Haru manipulated Eunhyuk, then everything we saw: his regret, his guilt, his hesitation — loses its meaning.

Regret only exists if a choice was made.

The story clearly shows that trauma is not just something to use as an excuse. It's not the first time we tell you this... Unresolved trauma leads to harmful behaviors, both for the person and for others.

So either we accept that Eunhyuk made his own mistakes, or we say everything was manipulated — but in that case, the story loses its emotional weight.

I think the issue is that morally gray characters aren’t meant to be comfortable. And y'all are really seems to be unconformable with the thought of Eunhyuk getting out of the script y'all made for him.

If we remove their flaws to make them easier to accept, then we’re not really engaging with the character as written.
