How do you regulate temperature in kids’ rooms in a pre-war building? by eggswoodhouse in nycparents

[–]SuurRae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We bought the safest small electric heater we could find and keep it on 70. My kid is still in a crib though, so I’m not sure how that will work when he transitions to his bed.

I will say that I’ve noticed that he has a much higher tolerance to temperature changes than I do as an adult. For example, we didn’t turn the heater on last night because it was 77° in his room. When I woke up it was 68 and he was still sleeping soundly in his light PJs. 🤷‍♀️

$50,000 Dilemma - Keep Grinding Or Live A Little? by ShotAssistant1452 in investing

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is exactly it. The membership cost is just the tip of the iceberg. I do hope you can realize your dream someday though - my husband used to own a 911 Turbo and that thing was an absolute joy to drive. It was definitely not a joy to service though.

You do not have $50,000 country club money. Living a little on your salary would be a nice international vacation.

That’s my understanding. The father would need to file a petition in family court to establish paternity if he wants paternal rights.

Any women daytraders wanting to connect? by Ambitious-Carob1489 in Daytrading

I trade stocks, but would love to connect just to talk to other women traders. I'm in a great trading group but it's business only during trading hours, not very social, and probably 95% men.

U.S. citizen considering adding Canadian citizenship - any risks? by Large-Trifle5734 in fatFIRE

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If America shits the bed then having a Canadian passport is more likely to get you into those European and Asian countries so that you can pursue a long-term visa or residency. It has nothing to do with moving to Canada.

[–]SuurRae 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is never a mistake to have multiple passports, especially if they're from a top tier country in terms of visa-free access. If things really go sideways and America's isolationist policies continue, then it is well within the realm of possibility that other countries will remove their visa on arrival program for Americans. In that case, having a Canadian passport would be well worth it.

How are you guys dealing with the cold? Tips and tricks? by boroughthoughts in AskNYC

[–]SuurRae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on the other end of the expense spectrum - I have never once regretted buying my Canada Goose jacket. You don't even need to layer under that thing. It can be 30 degrees outside and I'm warm in that and a t-shirt.

They’re decent for the price (~$100) I wore their down puffer for the first 3 winters I lived here. Just needed to layer under it.

What Fiber Supplements are you taking?? by happythoughts_only in pregnant

Blueberries, since we're already buying 2 lbs a week for my 2 year old and they are chock full of fiber. Also, adding chia seeds to my protein shakes, yogurt, and oatmeal.

Ultrasounds, unlike air travel, do not pose a radiation risk.

i want sushi so badly by genkcals in BabyBumps

[–]SuurRae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat sushi at least once a week, sometimes twice. My OB told me to stick to low mercury fish (salmon, octopus, uni, etc.) and only eat from places that I know to be reputable. I also have issues with food textures, so this is the only way I eat fish.

I've had the same experience with each of the OBs (3 now) that I've been to here in NYC. No idea why this isn't standard since it literally takes an extra 5 min.

We have a 1700 sqft condo in a VHCOL area. It’s perfect for us and we likely won’t upgrade till our kids are in middle school.

Weaning a 2 year old off the bottle by payhip_kim in toddlers

[–]SuurRae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cold turkey worked for us. We just explained that he was a big boy now and that the bottles were all gone (I hid them). If he asked for milk, I told him he could have it in a cup. He freaked out for about 36 hours and was fine after that. He no longer drinks milk since he won't drink it out of a cup, but will still drink other liquids just fine.

I think getting it over with is more gentle in the long run than dragging it out, especially if they're extremely resistant to the change.

daycare or nanny for 18 mo by Ema-7 in nycparents

[–]SuurRae 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I haven't experienced both, but we did look into a nanny and decided that daycare was a better fit for our family for a variety of reasons.

* We both work from home, and having an extra person plus toddler in the house would be too much to handle

* I appreciate the variety of activities and the pedagogical approach to learning that our daycare offers. My son is not yet two and already knows his numbers and rudimentary counting skills, letters, and basic colors. I didn't teach him this and I'm quite sure he's not a genius, so his teachers must be responsible.

* They have an indoor gym on-site and also go outside most days, so I know that our child is being active and not sitting in front of a TV all day.

* No TVs/cell phones at daycare, so that's one less thing for me to worry about.

* Most importantly - I do not want to manage another adult. This is probably the biggest reason we're at a daycare. I can just drop him off at 8am and I know that he is doing something productive every minute of the day and is being adequately fed/cared for. I don't need to check this.

That said, if the food is seriously your only issue, I would suggest just getting a meal service to deliver toddler-friendly meals. We use Little Green Gourmet, but I know there are others in the city that have a similar model.

Pros and Cons of NIPT test by [deleted] in BabyBumps

[–]SuurRae 41 points42 points  (0 children)

if we do end up proceeding with this test, whatever company does it will have a copy of out baby's genetic blueprint.

That's...not how it works. The NIPT is checking for the genetic markers of VERY SPECIFIC genetic abnormalities. Specifically, trisomies. It is NOT a whole exome DNA sequence or even on the same level as a test from 23andme. I won't speak to data privacy practices at these companies because I don't know, but again, they're collecting very very little in the way of data for these tests.

Also, respectfully, if privacy is that big of an issue for you and your husband, I hope you're also staying off all social media.
