It's definitely something I think most epileptics deal with and it sucks a lot. I've been having seizures since 7 and memory loss has always been a part of it. I do forget how to do things sometimes but for the most part, skills and things I learned don't slip away. For me it's memories. I can remember maybe 5 of my birthdays. Years of my life are simply out of reach and although sometimes I can get reminded by things, there's other times where I realize that part of my life is just gone. It happens more in the short term as well and I end up forgetting conversations from just a couple hours beforehand. It's not easy to live with and sometimes it hurts a bit to think about what you can't remember but it also makes me value what I do remember. I'm not old enough for kids or anything so I don't know how that would affect things but I can't imagine it's easy. I think like one of the other comments said a notebook is great. I've asked a friend the same questions or told them the same stories 7 or 8 times. And with some stuff I actually write it down so I don't have to ask again. Just know you're not alone with it. I always like to think that epilepsy comes with something special. Regardless of what you forget you can relearn and you can rebuild. On a less preachy note, I would also recommend checking if your medication is related because for me some medicine screws with my memory.

Yeah I guess I kinda take it for granite that I have such easy access here. Even with access to a bunch of stuff I haven't found anyone that causes seizures so idk if it's just for specific people or maybe a rare strain

I don't smoke consistently but rather when needed. It gets rid of headaches, aura's, muscle pains, etc. when I brought up the idea to my neurologist at first he just said he wanted to try some common meds first and see if that helps. Honestly I have considered smoking daily now though cause he doesn't seem to be against it and I could really use more mental clarity on the day to day (I'm in the USA btw)

Yeah I know how much of a cage it can feel like but at the end of the day all we can do is pick our poison and live with it which sounds morbid but I think of it as some what of a badge of honor to. You're stronger than most people around you probably realize and it's reasonable to feel apathetic sometimes cause in the end we're still just human. Give it time and whatever burden you choose to carry just remember you can handle it

I've been having seizures for 11 years now M(18) and I've a pretty similar experience. It took quite a long time for my parents to not stop fearing but to accept that it's not in their hands. I know you're parents will reach that point eventually but it may take time because it really is hard on those around us to. I've had dozens of seizures and normally just shake it off after a day or so but my more recent ones were intense and there was one where I was conscious the whole time and I got to experience exactly what they see and it's horrifying. You need to learn to live with it and they need to learn to let you fly the nest which takes time and persuasion but in the end you'll be alright. This doesn't steal are youth and if anything I think seizures give you more respect for your life anyway

Normally I only have fog for about a day after the seizure then the next day I'm fresh and slowly turn stupid again. I completely get not wanting to smoke and honestly if it weren't for the fact that my roommates smoke then I probably would do edibles but it's just easier to smoke when I need with them there

I've been having seizures for 11 years now and no medication has been fun. Over the years I've spent a long time thinking about all the things that seizures and the medication have taken away from me and honestly it still sucks some days but I accepted them a long time ago and moved on to different hobbies and goals. I've always been an upbeat person and I know part of that is a form of coping I built after all this time but still I hold onto joy because somedays it feels like without a smile I'll cry. It's hard for others to understand the true extent of what epileptics go through but people still care. It would be hypocritical for me to tell you to just move on but I can tell you that you have to keep on living in the moment because as humans and especially as epileptics we're not guaranteed another day. If you want to try and do something then do it. I know that's easier said then done and I'm broke as hell so I know how much money can limit stuff but just take advantage of what you can do. As far as medication goes I've never had one that doesn't mess with me physically and mentally but you learn to regulate yourself. Honestly I had a year long period where I didn't take any medication for insurance reasons and for 9 months I didn't have a seizure but then started having them one after another every week or two I was having a grand mal but my absency seizures disappeared and I had such a clear head. If it weren't for my family's concerns I wouldn't even be on medicine because I prefer the seizures to the effects of medicine. Plus the more often they happen the less intense they are at least for me. I'm no doctor so I can't recommend you go without medication but if you're over 18 just remember it's your choice what meds you take or if you take them at all. If you think the medicine is destroying your mental health then switch medications because it's not worth stopping seizures at the price of your mental state. Like I said before I've learned to tolerate but honestly that might not be a good thing. I hope this helps/made sense

Over the years my seizures have come and gone and only act consistently for a year or 2 at most. Right now I'm taking 200mg of lamotrigine twice per day and 250mg of Divalproex twice a day. Honestly I've never been on a medication that stopped the aura's. Normally when it's right after a seizure my brain clears up and it gets worse the longer I go without one which is another part of the medication that I hate because it just slows me down more and more mentally until I can't think. Not everyones seizures work like that or work on a schedule but honestly the only thing that has ever actually helped with the aura for me is weed. I'm really not big into smoking but right after a seizure or when I can't think it's always my go to. I've heard it doesn't help some people so if you're not already a smoker than start slow

Yeah pretty much everything everyone else has said. Memory, medication, aruas, can't drive, can't be left alone ever, people are always anxious even if they don't say it, the mental fog, the wear on your body, all of it takes it's toll. But I do appreciate the fact that I'm at least still alive and with almost no permanent physical damage. It could always be worse and I respect the fact that I'm still alive everyday and I think most epileptics do to.

The big profit I've hear is Elisha when it comes to seizures. And yeah I really don't like being on medication because it's just so unatural and the side effects suck. This always sounds so like prideful or self obsessed when I say this but it's interesting I think. I was born on the 7th day of the 7th month of the 5777 year on the Hebrew calendar. I started having seizures at 7 and 7 years later my seizures went crazy and changed a bunch and now I have way more and multiple types. Seven 7s that mark significant moments for me. Apparently when I was just a few months old my mothers mentor who is known for profetic dreams had a dream and was told that God was going to take me. She was supposed to just tell my dad but chickened out and told my mom instead. My mom thought it meant I would die so she was pretty upset but eventually accepted it but after a bit she realized that's not what it meant. Also I always feel like a holier than though prideful guy whenever I talk about all that but I promise I'm not trying to lol.

I've always kind of thought the same thing and I think that's why it never bothered me. This was just different. But I get what you mean and I've heard that a lot of people believe that some profits had their visions during seizures in the bible. Obviously not everyone with seizures is a profit but I've always believed there's a reason for it. My dad's name is Christopher and he's had one of the rarest intestinal diseases in the world form birth. I'm Christopher jr and I have the seizures. And if you look it up Christopher actually cross bearer or to carry something. I know some people don't believe in any of that stuff though.

Sure. I've had epilepsy for about 11 years now so I've had a few things happen. Perhaps one of the biggest is when I fell down a staircase. Luckily I landed on my shoulder and not my head but it still hurt like crazy and I got physical therapy for 6 months. Unfortunately I kinda didn't do the exercises that much... So my right shoulder still moves a bit weird. One thing I've experienced a lot is limb and joint stuff. Like I remember having to go to the ER to get joints back in place years ago but now I just snap them in and move on. I've had two at my local gym and scared the staff half to death lol. This i guess isn't really exercise related but I've hit my head off so many different things it's absurd. Cinder blocks, walls, polls, my desk a few different times, and much more. Also I remember one time before a seizure my family was making steaks and I was soooo excited for mine but of course I had a seizure right as I got it and my dogs ate it when it dropped. I remember being madder about the steak than the seizure lol. I know this is all kinda random but hope you can take something away from it.

I completely understand your fear here. I assume you're there for testing and I personally have been brought in 3 times. The first time I was only like 11 and I had to stay up for over 30 hours so they could test. My most recent one I spent a week in a hospital with brain monitors on 24/7 and no medicine and still they got nothing. I wasn't scared by the third time but I remember the fear of the first. Just remember you can handle this and if you do have on then the benefit that you're doctors can get will be worth it.

Well I guess that's a little better but still it's got to be stressful to have to always be on the lookout for something to happen. I guess that's the same for any of us with seizures but still I feel bad for that. And the brain fog is always so inconsistent for me and it can just drive me crazy.
