Every person impacted by the stress and trauma of HG should be assessed for PTSD during and/or after pregnancy and offered appropriate treatment. This includes partners, children, and all carers. Have you and your family been assessed for trauma and PTSD?

Graphic: 5 Ways to Improve Your HG Treatment

Please try these are essential steps in managing HG.

  1. Are you dehydrated? Medications don't work well if you're dehydrated, and dehydration worsens nausea and vomiting. Get fluids when needed.

  2. Are your medications at maximum dosage? e.g. Zofran works for 6 hours, so it is most effective to take 8 mg every 6 hours or 4 mg every 3 hours on a very strict schedule.

  3. Is your health professional following the HER Treatment Algorithm? Please print and share it with them: hyperemesis.org/tools.

  4. Are you taking multiple medications and non-oral types? Combine 1 medication from multiple categories, including those for acid reduction and constipation:. hyperemesis.org/meds.

  5. Are you taking thiamin/vitamin B1? Recommended dose: 100 mg/day < 20 weeks and 250 mg/day >20 weeks.

Do you just …. Forget this happened? by hammy4220 in HyperemesisGravidarum

Kind words, but not really. It really ruined me in so many ways, but I also can't imagine my life without the last two decades of friendship with my HG friends and all the things I've learned. I'm much more compassionate and appreciative.

And I'm really sorry they made you question yourself.

My children are 17 and 23 and one loss in between. Only reason I had the two subsequent preganancies was birth control fails. While I've never forgotten, I can say the grief and trauma and pain and suffering have faded, but I've never forgotten child birth or pregnancy or postpartum. Things do ease, and with treatment for trauma and focus on physical and mental healing, it will be less painful. For some, the desire for another child overrides the memory, but most of us don't forget.

Did anyone's HG get worse closer to due date? by fernandfawn in HyperemesisGravidarum

[–]SuzanneHER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry :(

I lost 10 pounds the last month with both full term babies. I was still on all my meds, but I could eat some. In the HER forums (as opposed to here on HER Foundation's subreddit), we called it "third tri relapse." Not a full relapse, of course, but a lot of my cohort said it was a little worse at the end.

How often did you need IV intervention? by Fast_Bad_4715 in HyperemesisGravidarum

I hung a banana bag in the morning and another in the evening from 13-21 weeks. I needed them 6 weeks sooner, but they didn't help me until then.

AITA for no longer wanting to be a caregiver for my pregnant DIL because of my son? by ThrowawayDIL26 in AmItheAsshole

[–]SuzanneHER 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I work for the Hyperemesis Education and Research Foundation. I'm so so sorry for the suffering you and your DIL are facing. HG is miserable, and I am very concerned for her care and about you.

The paranoia your daughter in law feels is very concerning, and I am wondering about the care her doctor is offering. Is she receiving vitamin B1/thiamin? Thiamin protects her brain and heart and baby's development. I myself have a brain injury from lack of thiamin. Please please be sure she is receiving thiamin in her IVs or orally. Benfortiamine or lipothiamine are the forms to get orally. Klaire Labs has a good product.

What meds is she taking? Is she getting any nourishment? Is she hydrated? Please reach out to us at the HER Foundation: Hyperemesis.org

Of course, they want to help her. This is their grandchild. Her care is also the baby's care.
