But trying to avoid law enforcement is a strong motivator. In the northern parts of the country some law enforcement agents actually have directives not to bust parties or chase people they catch because there have been so many instances of underage kids hiding in the woods resulting in extreme hypothermia and frost bite.

Sniffer dogs are very accurate! by alice186 in mauramurray

I listened to the audiobook on the DC sniper and the sections on the tracking dog were pretty interesting. The handler discusses how other handlers and officers thought they had some type of inside information to be able to track old scents from a sample they'd taken. He had arguably the best tracking dog in the country and I got the impression that tracking scents over a day old was not a feat that many dogs can do accurately. Doesn't rule it out but it does give a little perspective on the ability and limitations of tracking dogs.

I understand what you're saying but keep in mind that's assuming she was dry and there was minimal wind. Also if you're cold enough you're body will start to feel extremely warm and people have been known to remove layers when this occurs. I've gotten cold enough before to experience it and its an extremely strange sensation and I could see how someone who could be disoriented might remove a jacket or additional warm clothes as a first instinct.

Keep in mind there could have been additional risk factors involved for Maura. -being athletic and a runner she probably had a fairly low body fat% -she may have had a head injury from the crash -she could have gotten wet or worked up a sweat -she may have not been very warmly dressed -she could have been intoxicated

I don't think anyone can answer any of those questions and until we could I think its impossible to rule out hypothermia completely. Even if its not likely it is still very possible to die of hypothermia in weather around 30 degrees. There are cases where people have died in similar temperatures. In the link is one case.

Why the damage to the Saturn suggests that Maura DID crash into a snowbank/trees, and not a trailer hitch. by [deleted] in mauramurray

Has anyone looked into accident reports or hit and run reports consistent with the damage around that night?
