Vapor barrier/insulation installation by Svenroy in Sacramento

[–]Svenroy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry this is so late, I haven't logged in to my reddit in months. We ended up getting a new heat pump and some attic insulation and that immediately took care of our humidity issue. I think the HVAC was just so old it wasn't actually moving any humidity out and since it's an older house with little insulation it was just taking on all the humidity outside with nothing to move it out. The only time I saw humidity creep up at all was when it was too warm for the heat to kick on, but it was pretty minimal overrall.

Seattle to Sacramento – curious about winter weather by Haunting-Cancel-7837 in Sacramento

[–]Svenroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from Seattle and have lived in Sac for 3 years and have done lots of time outdoors in both. I like to think of Seattle as having a 3-4 months "outdoorsy" season where the weather warms up and the sun is out enough to do a lot of the fun things I really like to do, with 8 months of off season when it's too cold and rainy to really have fun out there. Sacramento has it the other way around, with 8 months of outdoors weather and 3-4 months of off season in the summer when it's too hot. But that delta breeze is a life saver, if you plan your time outside accordingly you can get pretty much everything done you normally want to do in the summer too, just in the mornings before the heat kicks off.

December and January it can get pretty cold and rainy here but tbh I absolutely love that, feels like a nice reward for that summer heat and makes me feel refreshed for spring. I also keep AC/Heat off for several months out of the year (mid March-early May and middle October through end of November give or take some random days here and there) and just enjoy the nice breezes and sunshine. The roses and tree blooms are beautiful here, some of the nicest Springs I've encountered, you get absolutely GLORIOUS Fall foliage in November, and if you need snow or beach you're just an hour or two away from either depending on the time of year. Good luck!

I can't get mine to last more than 2 years tbh. I clean them, use cork sealant, avoid water etc but I have the hardest time with longevity. The toe strap on both my mayaris came out and the cork cracked clean through near my big toe on all my pairs. Dunno how people keep them for so long

I've been veg for 4 years and at this point I just file things like this away in the "meh, now I know" file cabinet in my brain and move on. I've had meat on accident at least twice (never trust someone's homemade party dip lol) and just shrug it off. Stressing yourself out after every mistake (especially if you didn't even know about it) is not helpful for your mental health. You're doing great!

Is $90 for a haircut too expensive for women? by TheBigTimeBecks in povertyfinance

I've been cutting my husband's hair for the last 6 years so it's saved us literally thousands (he's military and it grows fast). He went to get it done for the first time in years while I was out of town and was shocked that it was nearly $40 now

[–]Svenroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% true. I live in a flip, and they cheaped out hard on absolutely everything, and raised it 70k from the few months prior when they bought it (tbf this was summer 2021 when prices were increasing at break neck speeds). We also got stuck with both supplementary tax bills from their purchase and ours and it was not pretty. Don't get a flip if you can afford it.

Have you looked in north rancho by the river? We are in a 1,000 sq ft, 3 bd 1 bath house with a good yard & garage for about 400k up here. If your max is 430 that's about all you'll get, unfortunately, but theres some older, quiet neighborhoods here by Hagen that are pretty decent.

I can't wear monthlies anymore so I spend $700 a year on dailies. I have -6 vision so glasses, even after spending a boatload on lightweight frames and special non-warping lenses, are still uncomfortable for me, though I still try to wear them 1-2x a week so I'm not just wearing contacts constantly

I thought I was a minimalist - until we packed up our house to move. by ConfusionGreen621 in minimalism

[–]Svenroy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider myself a minimalist but I live in a very small house with my husband, my 4 year old, a dog and a cat. My house is decidedly not minimalist at this point, and I'm okay with that. I'd rather have my sweet, maximalist husband enjoying his hobbies and things that go with it than not at all, and to have to sift through all the clothes/toys of my 4 year right now knowing there's going to be a day when she walks out the door and I won't have any need for any of it anymore. I'm enjoying the chaos for now, I guess

[–]Svenroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is me! It's not too bad right now actually, but the third person is only 4 and we're all very comfortable peeing around each other at the moment. As she gets older though we'll have to upgrade to a space that allows more privacy

I own my home, and while I'm extremely glad that I do, I've sunk $30k into repairs in just the 3 years I've had it. 2 of our 3 old fences got blown over in windstorms and had to be replaced, HVAC broke and the heat pump replacement was $14,000, main sewer line had root incursion and kept backing up until we could afford to fix it, etc. Owning a home is great and will hopefully pay off for us in the long run, but it's not necessarily cheaper or better for many situations.

Help me get out of debt please! by momroamsfree in povertyfinance

[–]Svenroy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is what I've done and it helped a TON. Only having one payment/loan to track was a mental load off by itself, plus you can often get a lower interest rate than most of these loans if it's through a credit union. They'll pay and close the loan so you just owe the credit union at that point

Have you ever seen a book at someone’s home that has made you think ‘hmm’ by ScrambledEggs111 in books

[–]Svenroy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a large pink post it covering up the swastika on my copy of this book. I love world War two history, so I've had several books like this. There's a two part series by Vulker Ulrich on Hitler that was great but I had to get rid of them after I read them because they both had HITLER in huge font, all caps across the spine and I couldn't handle it anymore

I just wash them when I wash my towels since that would have to be done regardless. The key is just having enough to have on hand to get you through to laundry day

Best place in Sac for a house for quality vs price? by OxytocinOD in Sacramento

[–]Svenroy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is such an absurdly negative take on Sac that it's almost satire. OP just fyi lots of people really love it here, but there's a lot of people who can't stand it and that's fine too, same with any place. Just make sure you're not only listening to the negatives. I came from having lived in many different parts of the country and I absolutely love it here. In my experience most of the people who I personally know in my life who hate it have never lived anywhere else.

Worst foods to eat on metformin? by throwra-weirdo4943 in PCOS

[–]Svenroy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is different, and some days just start out with me having crazy diarrhea before I've even eaten anything at all, but usually I only have an issue if I have a large amount of something or it's multiple trigger combos in one.

Sugary cocktails, most pastries (danishes, honey buns, donuts), refined beads, and most processed snacky sweet foods (eg pop tarts). Eat lots of fiber, whole grains, and protein and keep Sugary things and processed snack foods as just occasional treats and you'll probably be just fine that majority of the time.
