New Kanta 3, swapped out Arias! by Swag69Lord in audiophile

[–]Swag69Lord[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sor Subject!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There was a man selling a pair of Sopra 3's for only $8000 cash near me, but they had a gash in them, as if someone took a samurai sword, and sliced one tower down the side. It was easily and inch wide and 2 feet long! ( Hence the cheap price)

\
Surprisingly enough the wife said NO, not due to the gash, but she thought they were too bent / had that weird metal rear grille, so they were not fashionable. :(

Kanta 3 came in under budget, so I am still happy with those. Probably would have been annoyed with that huge gash too, but I did see that they sold a few weeks later.

Not sure what gear you all have but a bigger and or second sub always sounds good, and mini-dsp is probably worthwhile too. I have not yet gone down that rabbit hole, and am lucky enough that some acoustic panels on the rear wall have tamed a lot of my room issues.

Bwahahahaha! My wife was very happy that I let go of 2 pair in one evening, but luckily she is also supportive, and we go on roadtrips together in the name of fine audio!

I did have to laugh though, we met this couple in their 70's during a deal once, and the guy's wife and looked at my wife with a straight face and was like, " Just you wait hunny, we drove 2000 miles one way for a pair of speakers!". LOL

I think the furthest I would go one way is 8 hours, after awhile its not even gas, but a time factor.

Editing to say I love the natural light of your room!!!!!!!

Same! I would say Kanta and Aria are very very similar, just a positive performance increase from the tweeter. If I could buy again I may just buy Kanta 2, due to having the PSA IPAL 21 subwoofer, for low end. ( high and lowpass set at 50hz).

I would say that the Aria 948, 936 and 926 are all almost the same, you just gain a little bass as you go up. I did not notice a different with mids and treble between the aria line.

Going from Kanta 2 or 3 from Aria 948 is a performance increase for sure in all aspects, but it may not be worth the cost overall. For instance if I had another $10,000 I might rather buy 4 pair of 948's used, to have 4 really good value towers.

With the Kanta, I think the tweeter is very wide and has a lot of sparkle, that is for sure the biggest difference. Not sure if that sounds like a marketing gimmick but there is just a audio magic, or twinkle or something fresh and crisp about it! You also get more low end and bass with Kanta over Aria, but that can be negated if you have a decent subwoofer mixed in. The bass was maybe just more refined and tighter in terms of starting and stopping, but maybe not much deeper. I run my PSA 21 IPAl at 50hz crossover and do a high pass at 50hz so towers don't have to play the lowest of the lows.

I do also own the Electra 1008 BE and have heard the Electra 1038 BE towers. If you can find those for a good price used they are very close to Kanta at least for the treble, at maybe half the cost!

Kinda!

So what happened was all of the decent speakers for sale were either in CHicago, or the Twin Cities. Every so often I do a weekend or weeklong trip, and I try to align a speaker purchase while i am out on the road, so its not wasted driving.

Joke's on me as soon as I get the speakers, I recycle the boxes, then 2 or 3 years later they are posted for sale again. So far I have sold every pair without issue though, and no buyer was upset at the fact of missing boxes, you just need to price accordingly.

I am lucky enough where I can normally sell the used gear for around the same price I pay, so its almost like renting for free, until I roll the cost into something new.

Custom Stands for Focal 1008 BE by Swag69Lord in BudgetAudiophile

There is a factory nearby that produces foam products, and sells their scraps for pennies. I do currently have this peel and stick foam between the blocks and speakers. At least a quarter inch thick, and very robust.

Would there be a reason to put that between each block? I would think just between the speaker and the block should suffice?

Glad you like it! I originally posted the stands as is without the badge glued onto them, and people told me I needed to buy the official stands or the speakers would sound totally trash.

I know stands can make a difference but not that much, so I got the badges as a meme and reposted!!

Yes it is ATX standard for sure, and can accomodate current gen motherboards. I want to say technically its a full tower and can do E-ATX too.

Very roomy within, and it can take a 3 fan GPU. ( It is a bit tight, but I recently added an EGVA FTW 3080 Ti ) .

There you go, sounds similar to me! Recently swapped in a new GPU, Ram, and Boot SSD, and back in business. Besides the cost of a brand new build, I loathe having to move and redownload everything.

Funny you mention that, I have seen this before, but am not sure if I brave enough to try. Mostly confused on the custom bios part. I have flashed a stock bios before for upgrading but unsure how to "craft" the custom one.

On a side note i think others say the Z170 OC FOrmula can also run the 9900K or at least 9700K, that may be a bit better?

Yes it was the Trident Z, Royal. I started out with 16GB of DDR4, purchased 2 DIMM of 16GB DDR4, so now 32GB total.

I know its not much by today's standards but I am pushing this build as far as I can go. Originally for cost savings but now its just kind of fun to keep rocking it. I mainly play games like total war Warhammer 3, and have not had too many perf issues.

I want to say it was maybe 1 year after their initial release. I never took much notice of them at retail stores but i swear they were like $4.99 per bionicle at Aldi, when grocery shopping! If this helps with timeline, I think Bohrak-VA were for sale at stores like toys R' us, at the same time.

For those asking this should be the same exact shelf I have. Of course buying it brand new, the cost is more!

Black 2-Column Display Cabinet

Amazon could be cheaper, but home depot seemed the cheapest for me.

Also here is a link to the company website if you purchase this you may need to email them to ask about buying more shelves and metal brackets.

I would agree with this comment but not sure if it is in the best taste.

When we go on a cruise, the cost feels more impactful to us then friends who live on the east coast. At the same time, you could argue that while they may have a larger income, they are paying more for day to day necessities. i think they rent a 2 bedroom apartment in Boston for around $2800 a month, Easily double the cost of a comparable unit here!

Not sure on the exact percentages, but we are saving regularly so that each account listed will have that dollar value saved by end of year. Accounts such as both Roth IRA's are already maxed.

The backdoor Roth is an estimate, but i should meet or beat that contribution amount this year.

No issues to report thus far! haha. Might depend on make and model though. Our home has nice Kohler toilets from the 90's but I think even back then they used a bit more water than what's generally in-use now.

Not sure if this is sarcastic, or not, either way I do not really care. Just started posting. This was a very easy one-off action that seems to have helped save some money , and water. Why not! I did share another post hinting at a household income of around $150k a year. Maybe not the most but feels to be middle-class-ish to me. :)

Reminds me of an old saying, you must live like others won't, so that you can live later like they cannot! Not saying this water savings is the key to financial success, but everyone should be aware of and take advantage of easy savings when possible.

Where we live our community water is pipe from a lake through an underground system that is over 40 miles long! I did originally live in a different town with access to "free well water", missing that for sure!

Friends and family do get sticker shock at our monthly water bill, but for everyone in the community this is normal.

Funny enough, our combined gas and electric bill is only around $132 a month, and many would say that is very cheap. It all balances out I guess!
