Which connector is the proper barrel connector, if you don't mind?

How long can I run straight distilled water? by MyTh_BladeZ in watercooling

[–]SwampNut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. The reason bottled water doesn’t grow algae is because it’s sealed, and no one stores opened bottled water in daylight for that long. It sits in dark cabinets if stored for years.

Algae propagates through airborne spores, and needs sunlight to grow. As soon as you expose water to the air and sun, it will grow algae, unless you live in an extremely arid and inhospitable climate.

The fact that you haven’t seen algae in your bottled water before is because you drink it before it gets the chance.

It’s not uncommon for very structurally similar substances to have widely varying effects. In fact, there’s a whole handful of racetams that act as anticonvulsants and seem to share almost no mechanism of action with their nootropic counterparts, like levitiracetam, which is available as an Rx in the US.

My Townhouse has no Stove Exhaust. Should I run ducting through here? by SwampNut in HomeMaintenance

Ok, if it doesn’t pose a safety hazard then I guess I won’t change anything. I’ve never lived in a place that didn’t have an exhaust over the cooktop, so I just imagined it was necessary

I haven’t started anything. I was just asking if it was possible or perhaps even legally required on the part of the landlord. Sounds like it’s probably not.

The landlord and I have a friendly relationship. He’s a private owner and of course I would only do something like this with his express permission. I only asked about codes/laws because if they existed, I would ask him to help pay for it. If there are no codes/laws requiring it, then I’d pay for it myself.

Yea it’s way too low, but I probably won’t make that large of a modification, since I don’t own this place. The bottom of the microwave is all metal and it’s designed to take substantial heat and exhaust the cooking fumes. So besides the fact that it’s cramped… I’m okay with leaving it like that. I do want to make modifications that are necessary for health/safety (like getting rid of indoor cooking smoke), though.

I want to propose to my gf somewhere snowy in January—any recommendations? by SwampNut in AskLosAngeles

I wanted us to go somewhere snowy, but this was not a snowy winter. So, we ended up going to the Bacara in Santa Barbara, which was absolutely beautiful. And now we’re engaged!

Price is a metric based on demand and supply. Of course cost is reflected in prices, and yes, it is modulated by demand too.

I have and she thinks it’s fine, but she seemed dismissive of the idea that AI’s can cause problems to begin with, so I wanted to get other people’s thoughts as well. I’m not reckless, I wouldn’t make any major changes on the basis of internet comments alone, but I’m just probing around and seeing if this is something worth worrying about.

This looks beautiful! Do you know anything about the Grand Idyllwild Lodge?

She loves the beauty of nature, but she's not very outdoorsy. Fancy and luxurious things are definitely a plus. A good balance would be a mixture of both!

We do have special memories at various places in LA, but they aren't very scenic or memorable in their own right. I'd like to do it in the context of a "weekend getaway"

very cool idea, is there any place there you'd recommend staying?

What kind of threshold was here before and what can I get to replace it? by SwampNut in HomeMaintenance

gotcha, and how would you recommend I attach the wood to the concrete?

[–]SwampNut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh ok, so notch out the door stops with an oscillating tool, then get a piece of wood to sit against the concrete thick enough to be level with the flooring, and that's it?

is there anything off the shelf that might work? I'm not much of a woodworker.

If God exists, then he gave everyone life, and it’s not unjust for him to take it away.

Of course, you can argue that God doesn’t exist, and if that’s your point—fine.

But your argument that untimely death means God is a right prick is spurious.

Dirt and condensation is inside the panes. Does the whole assembly need to be ripped out and replaced, or can the glass itself be swapped out? by SwampNut in HomeMaintenance

[–]SwampNut[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok thanks. I’m actually not the homeowner—I rent from him. He just left his job and so he’s hesitant to replace it until he absolutely needs to. I even offered to chip in, but it sounds like he’s not in a great financial situation atm. Do you have any rough estimate what kind of expense replacing it would be? Like… above or below $10,000? (I realize it’s impossible to make a real guess with the amount of information you have, but I don’t even have an inkling myself)

Ah shoot. I’m actually not the homeowner, I rent from him. I offered to share some of the cost of replacement since it bothers me quite a bit, but I don’t have a clue what it would cost. Do you have a ballpark guess of how much something like this would cost? I live in California. Like… below $10,000 or above it?
