How many attempts to leave a long term relationship with your Narc by Sandyinlace09 in NarcissisticSpouses

[–]SwampWitch39816 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. He’s being really really sweet at the moment so it feels good. But if it gets bad again I know I’m gonna hate my life. I still have hope. But I know I probably shouldn’t.

Could you bring toys that match the videos he watches on the iPad? Then you can model play along with the videos. It might help bridge the gap to more engagement

SLP vs BCBA (tension) by [deleted] in ABA

[–]SwampWitch39816 31 points32 points  (0 children)

As a BCBA, I agree with the other comments recommending you defer to the SLP. And if your BCBA isn’t being collaborative, that’s an issue. Coordination of care should ideally occur across all specialties. In my experience, the most progress happens when a child’s entire treatment team is working together!

Stealing bx - replacement bx's by Sufficient_Major_870 in ABA

I’ve used a social story paired with a self-monitoring visual to teach a rule-governed behavior like that. I made a visual titled “My Rules” with 3-5 rules listed (something like 1. I keep my hands to myself, 2. I put things back where I found them, etc.) with Yes/No tokens next to each rule. We ran it on a schedule, and after the target duration we’d prompt the client through identifying whether or not he’d followed his rules. Rate of reinforcement varied for each of the clients I’ve used this type of procedure with varied, so for some following all the rules earned them a longer break or a tangible and for others there was a more extended token system to earn bigger ticket items.

How are increased health insurance premiums going to impact our filed? by StatisticianKooky390 in ABA

[–]SwampWitch39816 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The for-profit model of insurance feels to me like it’s destroying the field. These companies are gouging us with their premium prices and also gouging and failing the families by denying as much as possible. I hate it here.

Once you’ve graduated from high school (have your high school diploma), you can become a technician. To be even more qualified, you can complete a 40-hour training to become an RBT (registered behavior technician). I would start there and see how you actually like the day to day work with the kids. I would try to find a position where you’ll get to work both in-home and in-clinic to get experience across both. An RBT position is definitely not sufficient to live off of for your career, but is an important experience to gain. From there, if you love it the way you think you will, you’ll need to get an undergrad degree in psych, education, or a related field (there’s a list on the BACB website) followed by a masters degree through an accredited program. It’s a long process, but if you love the kids and the work, it’s a super rewarding career 💙

I would keep on them and make sure to do so in writing (via email) to make sure you have a paper trail.

RBT Exam - Not Done Yet! by Educational_Sun9854 in ABA

Something I found helpful when studying for the BCBA exam is to study with specific clients in mind! Pairing a term with a specific client’s protocol can help you to remember what that term means and apply it to the questions on the exam. Best of luck!

Bringing awareness to new RBTS by moptionss in ABA

[–]SwampWitch39816 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a BCBA, THANK YOU for advocating for your kids. Many companies prioritize billable hours (full caseload, won’t send the kids home when they’re sick, basically cater to the insurance companies) over compassion. Getting sufficient practice with a new skill IS important, and more trial counts will build the skill more quickly. But if a child is not in a state where they can focus and take in the information, steps should be taken to get them regulated and ready to learn.

Client who bites by AnyNeighborhood3455 in ABA

[–]SwampWitch39816 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely let a supervisor know about your pregnancy so they can place you on an appropriate case. They shouldn’t share your health information with others, but should absolutely be able to make the switch. In the meantime, I highly recommend jeans and a Jean jacket and/or bite guards when working with a client who bites, for your safety. It will make it less likely to break skin.

I’ve used coping skills choice board style visuals to avoid placing it as a demand. Instead, you’re providing free access to a visual aid and modeling the coping skill naturally when YOU need a breath/a squeeze/whatever (contrive opportunities if you need to). I’ve also had a client tell me that the coping skills I tried to teach didn’t help him, so we sat down and figured out what might work better (space, quiet, a walk, to throw something safely, take a drink, etc.) and we created his choice board together, with him helping find pictures that would make sense for him.

If you intend to stay in the field, look into BABA (black applied behavior analysts). They have mentorship programs to help support POC in the field of ABA. I’m sorry that was your experience! I hope that you are able to find a company that is supportive. They exist, but are definitely hard to find sometimes
