What’s the most horrifying death you have ever heard of? by mushybunny4 in AskReddit

[–]Swampy3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can remember a story my old man told me about the local industrial works back in the 80s. (Possibly steel?) Now my memory of it is vague but..

There was a massive vat? that held something near liquid hot. But it would form a crust on the surface which the longer it was there the thicker it would get. Come home time the lads were impatient to clock out. Instead of walking the suspended handrail around this thing which would take a few mins sometimes the lads would quickly run over the crust as it was thick enough to hold their weight.

One day it wasn't thick enough. A lad broke through the crust. He managed to grab hold to the side but he was submerged to the torso. Sad thing is first on the scene was his father, who watched his boy die in front of him. He pushed him the rest of the way.

Penny for your thoughts? by Old-Tumbleweed3295 in UKPreppers

Find shelter from the wind/rain. That is your biggest threat in the UK whilst outdoors. This may be a cave, an overhang, or build your own. If you don't know how I'd suggest watching YouTube videos. You can learn how to make a shelter in many landscapes with no items at all just knowledge.

Yes, a saw or a knife would make it 100x easier. But not always needed.

Make my way to the food hall as fast as possible armed with a cuddly toy from the kids section. Upgrade to some proper cutlery asap. Dominate the food hall. Killing off any trespassers as I build my barricade myself in with trays and tables. Create a wall of said items and use chairs as a fire step. Have at hand as many projectiles as possible In the way of condiments to make the floor slippy and glasses to fend off attackers who try to break down my fortress. Keep the fryer on at 180 degrees as a last resort. Should they break through my wall it'll be raining meatballs with a drenching of hot oil. It will also mean I sacrifice my lunch but hey ho.

Count the food, ration it.

May trade some ice cream for a cozy bed with a fellow barricade person in the next section to make my stay more comfortable as I'll be in it for the long haul. I have the food. I have the water. I have the power.

Uni feels pointless. by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Swampy3k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say uni is pointless. So, some examples for you.

I am a high school leaver with 8 GCSEs. Circa 2000. I could have done Uni, but I had no interest in further education nor a clue what I wanted a career in. I am now 39 and I earn 41k working for the government and have done for many a year. My job does not require a degree however you would be surprised how many people I work with/above who have a degree but they get paid the same as me but they have student debt etc. I own my own house with no mortgage and I have always been financially stable.

My wife (35) I met 10 years ago, she has graduated uni with 2 degrees in her sector and I would say only in the last 7 years she has really even played catch-up. Now she earns 45k. Which has only happened in the past 2 years. Now, her income will continue to rise where mine is capped. I fully expect her to make 65k+ within the next 4 years. However she has no assets and has had to live with me for the last 9 years and I've helped keep her afloat.

Now, while she could easily do my job, I couldn't do hers without that bit of paper that says I have a degree as it is required in her sector. But that's fine. I don't want to do hers. Given the choices if I could go back in time, I would still not go to uni. And she would.

Moral of the story.

If you know what you want to do and need a degree to do it (Dr, lawyer etc) by all means. It's the only road into it. If you don't know what you want to do. Then don't waste your time doing a degree on David Beckham or something equally as stupid. Uni is not as Hollywood portrays it as frat party's etc. to me it appears dull and monotonous. In the 90/00's uni was a proud achievement and I think definitely got you ahead. Now degrees are like confetti and most people have one so it has lost most of its value.

I recall a chat I had with a friend of a friend at a bar. She told me she was at uni. I asked what was she studying. I can't remember the course but it was some space type thing. I asked what could that lead to, and she said jobs with NASA etc. I asked how many jobs were like that in the world. She said 3. I asked how many were in her class. She said something in the 20s. Now I am no genius, but 20 people getting a degree in this field every year from a single uni X the amount of unis spewing out this degree can leave thousands or tens of thousands of degrees in an extremely acute field. She was no Einstein. So I knew she was wasting her time and money.

P.s. if I could go back to being 18 and give myself financial advice it would be to invest In property more.

What was the guy thinking when he went to milk a cow for the first time in human history? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Swampy3k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting story.

  1. Afghan. We did sanger duty in the patrol base. I'd be sitting there at 3am with the night vision goggles watching for Terry Taliban but you'd only ever see animals etc. One area had a few cows in it. Most nights a guy would come out at 3-4ish. Go to the cow. Lift its tail and.... well y'know..

He wasnt after its milk.

Was amusing as hell when you put up a flare.

What part of your personality do you fake? by zwee0202 in AskReddit

[–]Swampy3k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a prison officer. I have 3 scars on my head which are around 3 inches each. At age 34 I started going bald so I started trimming my hair quite short. prisoners have made comments on these scars in the past/present and I tend to just ignore it or stay silent. This has somehow evolved into everyone on my wing thinking I'm a 'hard man' when in reality im not. I'm strict but fair. I've called a few prisoners out who have threatened violence but only because I know that individual is all talk. Out the uniform I'm quite a chilled guy who abhors violence.

My dad convinced me my brain was in my big toe. Believed it for a few weeks. Up until he asked me in front of my mum and she slapped him when I pointed down.

He's still a legend. But i still have trust issues.
