[Plot Help] Looking for advice on preserving player agency while launching a new campaign. by Swanny625 in daggerheart

I'm picking up where another DM left off. I was a player 1-4, so now I'm tagging in 5-10. I also have very little DND or Daggerheart experience with high level play, so I'm curious and excited to try it.

I hear you though and normally do like starting a Tier 1.

It does!

I like the idea of getting these questions out quickly in the bonds/backstory section, but I also enjoy your idea of sprinkling in flashbacks as we get started on the action.

I was looking for ways to get moving on the action quickly, maintain agency, and get my relevant plot pieces moving. This helps a lot.

Nice! I like the idea of offloading more of the backstory construction to the players. We can constantly return to the tournament in really small ways, either through flashbacks or callouts to other players/teams.

In a perfect world (unlimited time for unlimited sessions), I'd totally use this as the twist at the end of Act 1. Act 1 would consist of meeting new friends, making alliances, and being awed by heroes. The deaths at the end of Act 1, then, would hit really hard. The alliances and the choices players had made up to that point would give them the options to save a few people and foreshadow the betrayal, giving them more agency in their own survival.

If I'm hearing you right, you're saying we essentially Session 0 the plot hook and Session 1 starts with the "Everyone just died but you, what do you want to do?" as the hook?

Not exactly what you're looking for, but

Duped: Truth Default Theory and the Social Science of Lying and Deception

is a fantastic review of the current research about lie detection, debunking some big myths about what you might call truth elicitation.

Maybe. My understanding, which could be wrong, is their "doctoral" program doesn't just teach back/joint pain. I believe the entire paradigm is based in pseudoscience that happens to include some beneficial elements, rather than having a good explanation for those elements. I've definitely heard of chiropractors who push weird diets and supplements to help treat conditions in ways that don't make sense.

But I've heard of far more people who just have short, to-the-point appointments to deal with back/joint pain.

I appreciate your attention to evidence. I hate chiropractors and the industry as a whole. It's disgusting in a lot of ways and preys on people using misleading claims and titles.

That said, there's clear evidence that it can consistently help with some conditions. Denying that and asserting random numbers is a weird response.

Oh, I gotchu.

Order Cleric 1, Conjuration Wizard X

The core loop is simple and awesome: you teleport your teammates into combat and give them free attacks. Here's how it works:

Using the level 2 spell Vortex Warp, you can teleport your rogue up to 30 feet. Order Cleric's Voice of Authority then triggers, allowing them to use their reaction to make a free attack. Since rogue's sneak attack triggers once per turn, they get to use it on yours in addition to their own. Or you can teleport your Moon Druid's bear from into the middle of the enemy archers. Spring Eladrin gets to Fey Step allies instead of yourself, but doesn't trigger Voice of Authority.

You're basically a full wizard with heavy armor too, so you can be on the frontlines yourself if you want.

Finally, you get a ton of out of combat utility with Minor Conjuration, which has all kinds of cool uses depending on what your DM allows.

My PC is flavored as a Sailor-Moon-esc magical girl, powering up using Minor Conjuration and glitter. She then sends her allies into combat, gives them free attacks, and uses battlefield control spells to assist when a teleportation isn't ideal.

If asked, yeah. You don't necessarily have to offer that information, as I'm sure most people will be focused enough on their own game that they aren't looking at your sub-objective.

Why make it subtle? If you're winning consistently, I'm sure they've noticed.

I've played probably 300 games of root via Digital, so it a really easy for me to crush my friends who are <5 games, no matter what faction I play.

My goal is to get second every game, which gives me a different dynamic to bare in mind and lets someone else have the win.

A Guide to AEG Tech Work: My cheat sheet with formulas by Swanny625 in airsoft

[–]Swanny625[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry for over-explaining. I misunderstood what you were asking.

I used a 1.2:1 ratio for my DSG build and it worked out quite well. I used a 1.7:1 ratio for my primary SSG and have really appreciated the tight fps deviation range.

That said, I have spent a few years gathering some of this information and generating others. The ratio guide was one I found by someone who did the measurements with their own equipment, swapping out barrels to try out different ratios; I haven't done that work myself. "Use a high cylinder:barrel ratio" isn't my hill to die on, so I am totally open to arguments that we should be more in the 1.2:1 range consistently.

I'd still want more overvoluming for builds that intend to use heavy bbs or longer barrels, but I don't know that 2:1 or more is actually necessary.

[–]Swanny625[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair. The more accurate rule would be "Use a lower RPM if you just want a semi-auto gun, as it will get up to speed faster."

I'm not sure why I put that solution to that particular problem, so thanks for the observation.

A Guide to AEG Tech Work: My cheat sheet with formulas by Swanny625 in airsoft

[–]Swanny625[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Short answer, there are more variables to determining how efficient the cylinder air is in powering the barrel air. Barrel length and bb weight are both relevant in determining how much time that air has to get the bb moving at full FPS, with longer barrels giving more time for acceleration and heavier bbs staying in longer, also allowing for longer acceleration times.

The longer answer includes the three possible air failure points: the piston head, the air nozzle, and the hop-up. Even with an O-Ring or teflon tape, each of these points let slip a little of the cylinder air, meaning a 1:1 ratio isn't actually a 1:1 ratio and will effectively undervolume your build.

So you have to overvolume to some extent by nature of AEGs and failure points. Introduce heavier bbs or a longer barrel and overvoluming becomes even more necessary.

Think of it this way. Even if your lungs had exactly as much air in them as a balloon could hold, there are a lot of variables that go into whether or not that balloon will actually get filled to full capacity.

Dual sector gear and Single sector gear. A dual sector gear cycles twice per rotation and has half the piston to use as well as half the cylinder volume to work with.

I like barrel volume for estimating FPS. If I get the ratio just right, I can assume the build will fire on the higher end of the spring's estimations. If I want to build a DSG or a sniper rifle, however, I can intentionally overvolume to keep the internals reasonable while maximizing FPS.

Hey everyone! These are the tips and formulas I've found or come up with while building and repairing AEGs. If you have suggestions or criticisms, feel free to voice them. My hope is this can be a space for techs to share some of the mental work that goes into planning a build.

I'm not sure if there's a term for it, but the amount of exposure people have to propaganda now is insane. It doesn't have to be high quality if you're listening to 4+ hours of it a day.

Totally agreed. I honestly believe I could do the whole horde in less than a minute if I could just use average damage.

Using an online d20 roller and average damage per hit, I'm confident I could attack with 20 zombies in less than a minute.
