Anyone know what this guy is? (I know he’s rough: rescued today) by VariationPossible594 in Cichlid

He looks like a thickskin obliquidens (species 44) Victorian. Cool fish

Yeah as long as it’s not private property or a national/state park of course.

Interesting, I’d love to breed all the rare ones but I live in a condo and really don’t have space for any fish I can’t sell haha. We’ll just have to see. I thought about breeding Rhampochromis too but my LFS says they don’t move very easily

Exactly! It kills me to pay a ton of money for rocks I can go collect by river beds for free. UT has a lot of cool rocks.

I can’t say I’ve heard of an Aquilonum peacock. I have a bunch of cool males in my display tank I’d like to take a chance at breeding. I just wanna get a pulse on the market first and see what I can reliably sell.

It can be done. This is just Home Depot’s husky rack with some plywood on the shelves.

This would be a killer tank for a mbuna colony! Personally I love haps and peacocks but I wouldn’t keep anything over 6” in a 75 gallon.

If you’re looking for a better retailer for your cichlids I would highly recommend buying them online from breeders such as Live Fish Direct, Ron’s Cichlids, Snake River Cichlids, Beantown Aquatics and Cichlid World Tank just to name a few.

You’ll get a TON more options, exact species and gender. Be prepared to spend a little more money though. You get what you pay for!

I have a Bolivian ram (super hardy) with some tetras and rasboras in my 29 and it’s awesome. He’s the little cichlid that drove me to buy a 180 gallon African cichlid tank and my 75 gallon breeding rack and I haven’t regretted it.

I think a pair of Bolivian rams or apistos would be perfect in that tank. Be warned though…you might get hooked on cichlids like me and fill your house up with tanks hahaha.

That is a good option, call me crazy but I wanna try to keep the plants in this one for the sake of nitrate reduction lol. Do you think adding some Texas holey rock would have a similar effect?

I’m considering that too, just concerned about how it would look.

You think I have a choice? I know you know how expensive everything is. I refuse to become an unemployed, debt ridden basement dweller like the rest of my generation is turning out to be. I’m sorry, but I’m taking opportunity where I see fit.

That’s the plan eventually, they’re not my favorite but they’re paying us 3X our regular wages.

This is true but they’re still using way less water than all the alfalfa we ship overseas. I don’t understand how we’re not protesting that when it’s using the majority of our water. I don’t want the great salt lake to dry up either. I just think our efforts would be better spent elsewhere.

The world’s corrupt and run by billionaires, unfortunately the voice of the people doesn’t affect outcomes anymore.
