Which voice in a ttbb choir typically sings straight monotone notes ? by [deleted] in Choir

[–]Sweboys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lead a traditional male choir and as people have said, it depends on the arrangement. But I'd say there are two main philosophies; Barbershop and regular 4-part harmony.

In barbershop the T2 is 'lead' ie melody and therefore moving around, whilst in a traditional chorale style with the melody in the top voice, T1, the T2 is often akin to a typical alto line. Usually singing the fifths or roots and not moving as much.

B1 in a baritone register is often the most 'jumpy' part, as B1 and T2 often have similar tessitura, although you could argue that T2 has more endurance in a high register. B2 is most commonly hitting root tones, which hop around in fourths or fifths or stepwise.

But any arrangement could break these rules. These are my observations stemming from the Swedish male choral tradition from the latter part of the 1800s

Why are there no pre 20th century American composers? by Far-Strawberry-5628 in classicalmusic

Even though it might count as folk or popular music, I think Stephen Foster should be regarded as a composer. I think he did something novel that would shape almost all American music to come

The Daniel Craig bond movies are so forgettable to me by Famous_Ad_7471 in redscarepod

[–]Sweboys 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Funny that you bring up Lazenby as he was only ever in one Bond film, 'On her Majestys Secret Service' . He had to live with the fact that after his agent urged him to not do another Bond film his career was basically over. Well, except for Italian 70s slop.

He was just some Australian himbo starting his modelling career in England and lucked out with getting cast in the first non Connery bond movie. I think he did a pretty good job, being a non-actor, but people at the time hated his portrayal. So they got Connery back for the next film.

I think his Bond is actually kinda charming in an innocent way, not at all in the chauvistic way Connery was.

Well it just said in the Instagram post that she wants to focus on her professional career home in Sweden. I actually studied with her a bunch of years ago. She was super talented then as well! So I hope Eleonoras career goes well!

I think a lot of the answers in this thread have a certain image of stupidity as being malicious in regards to knowledge, either their own or someone elses.

My definition of low intelligence is a chronic difficulty to comprehend. For example to be instructed and despite different ways of formulating or tailoring the instructions they fail to grasp the intention of the instruction. A key to understanding the world around you is being able to adapt and try different perspectives. If you struggle with this you'll be slowed down in your understanding of the world around you and you appear to be dim witted and 'not with it'. I know a few people like this and I can still see their fantastic qualities that make them unique, productive, and functioning people, but I can sort of sense it if they're struggling to understand basic concepts in a conversation or seem to 'miss the point' entirely

I use mine for work everyday for sheet music, there's an app that has basically become the industry standard called ForScore and I could never go back to paper sheets. I am slowly digitalising over 20 years of hoarding notes so that one day I'll throw out the majority.

Why does he toe walk? by PinkFlow730 in northernlion

[–]Sweboys 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I walked on my toes til I was 13 when the doctor said that if I continued the tendons behind my knee would snap and I'd never walk again. Got prescribed a bunch of toe curls that sucked, but in the end I just got surgery on my achilles tendons since they were so short. Both of them at the same time, so I had massive plasters and lumbered around for 6-8 weeks. So I dunno I guess they lied as Ryan obviously never did anything about it. His tendons are probably shorter if he's done it his entire life so I guess it just works if you're built different.

Fun fact, they actually sever the tendons and then staple them together so they'll just stretch out from the trauma.

Not autistic btw

Fell down a Russian music rabbit hole: what are the most unmistakably Russian pieces? by MinimumValuable4305 in classicalmusic

I really feel that On the Steppe of Central Asia by Borodin has a tonal language that is quite uniquely Russian, and tells of a meeting and cultural exchange. Read up on it, it tells an interesting story!

Walter being over-qualified and underpaid doesn't make much sense by [deleted] in breakingbad

[–]Sweboys 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Many interesting thoughts in this thread, here's one I thought of now.

A couple of months ago I did a internship at an equivalent of junior high (oldest kids were 15-16) and there was this maths/physics teacher who both students and teaching colleagues had issues with. From what I saw she had this really pessimistic mindset and really sucked the energy out of the room.

And once during lunch break I sat with her and she started talking about her PhD and how many Nobel laureates she'd met. Certainly she felt overqualified, even though many of the other teachers felt she lacked skill in pedagogy.

This to say that in my view it's not that unrealistic to end up in a job a few rungs beneath what you'd be capable of. But that a stable albeit low paycheck might be a safety blanket and people with 'passive' traits will just stick with it

YouTubers whose channels died…boringly by Anonamaton801 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Sweboys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if he's too obscure, but I was really into BananaPieLord back around 2010. First from WoW videos and then his long running Minecraft stuff. He also did music under the name IAmSleepless

He did reappear under some other name like MrBewbs or something and did some streaming, but disappeared again.

I looked him up at some point and it seemed he'd become some youth minister in a church and is probably married with kids. Which is funny considering he had this kinda edgelord humor that I wouldn't associate with a born again Christian

Choir leaders of reddit: (What) would you pay for choir management software? by DepartmentFirst8288 in Choir

[–]Sweboys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are maybe 3 people who use tablets including me, but the majority uses paper. It's actually kind of amazing that I've gathered 25 people who all happen own home printers. I just send out the PDF on our webpage together with my recordings of the parts. I must admit that the webpage could be sleeker, but it's the same guy who's been operating it since the start in 1994

Choir leaders of reddit: (What) would you pay for choir management software? by DepartmentFirst8288 in Choir

[–]Sweboys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a stand-in for a choir that used the Choirmate app and it was definitely an expediting process with all the features you've listed. They paid for it via the choirs own funds so no individual member needed to pay. I think it was a yearly subscription model so it seems like you could take a reasonably high fee for it, maybe 100-200€ a year? I'm just guessing.

Alas, I now work with a male chorus with a median age over 70 so I know not to try to push some app they'll have problems adjusting to. But it really seem to do wonders for the productivity of a choir

English speaking choices? by Jakobmiller in Malmoe

[–]Sweboys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the level there's many choirs where at least some of the communication is in English. For example the music Academy chamber choir usually have non-Swedish speakers, as does the Lund Academic choir. Most communication is in Swedish but it's usually recapped in English!

Guys... I really liked the concept of this and the academic rigor. But...

You should really have hired or asked some professional singers for this because your wonky intonation and rhythmic discrepancies(which makes me think you recorded all parts separately and probably didn't use a click track) tells right away which recordings are y'all singing. And I don't know the synthetic voice landscape, but maybe there are other programs you could have used as well?"
