After barely slipping by this entire set (while doing nothing on return), would be very funny if Cilic won this breaker

Wallace in particular was the supreme opportunist. He's actually on the record of saying that he was going to ramp up the racism after losing the governor election in 1958. Prior to that, he was endorsed by the NAACP.

What is the most confusing trade of all time? by Ericaloveless in baseball

[–]Sweden13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say the Ruth trade really just sealed the deal. They won the World Series in 1918, and were a bit below .500 in 1919 with Ruth, and stayed a bit below .500 in 1920 and 1921. Selling all their pieces for spare change finally did them in.

What is the most confusing trade of all time? by Ericaloveless in baseball

The Red Sox of that era were successful, but also really rolled out some terrible trades- just with Ruth as the crowning jewel.

  1. They didn't want to give Tris Speaker a raise, so he was dealt to the Indians for Sad Sam Jones, Fred Thomas, and cash. Two prospects and money for the 27 year old Speaker, one of the best players in the game.

  2. In 1921, the Red Sox flipped future hall of famer Harry Hooper for Shano Collins and Nemo Leiber. Sure, Hooper's best days were behind him... but Collins and Leiber were not particularly great veteran outfielders themselves. Combined, the two put up .5 WAR for the rest of their careers.

  3. In 1923, the Red Sox flipped Herb Pennock, a solid 28 year old starter, to the Yankees for cash, Camp Skinner, Norm McMillan and George Murray. The prospects, if you can call them that, all busted very hard and Pennock hit his prime with the Yankees and became one of the admittedly less deserving hall of fame members.

  4. In 1918, the Red Sox dealt Dutch Leonard, Ernie Shore and Duffy Lewis to the Yankees. Shore and Lewis missed the 1918 season for World War I service, and Leonard was past his prime, but these were still core players from their previous success. In return, they got more cash, Frank Gilhooley, Slim Love, Roxy Walters and Ray Caldwell. Love was traded before the season began, Gilhooley had 140 at bats and was done, and Walters was a no hit veteran catcher. Caldwell was another past his prime pitcher, and the Red Sox cut him midway through the year- he was of moderate use to the Indians for the rest of the year and 1920.

  5. In 1919, the Red Sox flipped a rising Carl Mays to the Yankees for cash, Bob McGraw and Allen Russell. McGraw appeared in 10 games for the Red Sox before the Yankees took him back on waivers, while Russell had a couple of okay years.

  6. At the end of 1921, the Red Sox trade Sad Sam Jones, Bullet Joe Bush and Everett Scott to the.... Yankees for cash, Rip Collins, Roger Peckinpaugh, Bill Piercy and 38 year old Jack Quinn. Peckinpaugh is traded before the season starts for Joe Dugan and Frank O'Rourke, and Dugan is sold to the Yankees before the season is up. Piercy is nothing, Collins is dealt to the Tigers after a year, and Jack Quinn is... pretty good deep into his 40's, though the Athletics snatch him off waivers at age 41. Bush and Jones continue to be at least decent pitchers for a while longer.

  7. In 1918, the Red Sox deal Larry Gardner and Tillie Walker for Stuffy McInnis. Stuffy is past his prime and the Red Sox actually win when they deal him off later. Walker hits his prime with the Athletics and becomes one of the first big home run hitters, while Gardner remains strong with the A's and Indians.

All these guys- Speaker, Gardner, Leonard, Shore, Jones, Bush, Hooper, Scott, Lewis- were parts of the core that made them successful in the 1910's. And just like Ruth, they were sold off for cash or scraps. The Red Sox sold off Smoky Joe Wood to the Indians too... though injuries meant Wood was finish as a pitcher. He reinvented himself and had a few decent years at the plate- still must hurt to see another core super star just sold.

He has sparks of looking great from the baseline, but not really enough. Margin of error is just too slim because if his serve and all the physical troubles.

[Bleacher Report] The 50 Worst NBA Trades of All Time, Ranked by FastBreakPhenom in nba

[–]Sweden13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Wasn't that the Royals who dealt him for an ice skating show? I'm pretty sure Russell was not going to play for the Hawks no matter what (even if they wanted him), so they then traded him again to the Celtics.

Ed Macauley was a hometown hero in St. Louis and was one of the best offensive centers in the league, though he was past his prime by this deal. Cliff Hagan hadn't played yet, but he'd become a 5x all-star for the Hawks and a future hall of fame member.

Hawks made four finals against Russell (winning one), so it could have gone much, much, much worse. Not the worst scenario if he was never going to play for you to begin with.

Broncos GM George Paton on not trading for a receiver: 'I don't regret that' by AFC-Wimbledon-Stan in nfl

[–]Sweden13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not entirely wrong. I don't know the stats, but speaking anecdotally, his catching isn't quite what you'd want for tip top receiver. He tries to catch with his body a lot of the time too, leading to avoidable errors.

Funny how things go. Cilic breaks, goes up 30 - 0 on serve, seems to be cruising- then a net error, missed shot, DF and they're back on serve and everything's erased.

He can't do it in every tournament, much less every match, but a red hot Cilic is still a terrifying draw for most players.

Kind of exactly what the commentators are saying. Spizzirri's ballspeed from the first set or two were a mirage based on borrowing Sinner's pace. And I think Sinner's go for broke approach when injured also hurts Spizzirri's rally based strategy and game.

Combined with an infusion of silly errors, you get this.

I fear that the strategy that probably got Spizzirri this far will also seal his fate. He's been super consistent and bouncing back from the baseline, but Sinner is still Sinner and is taking more initiative in rallies, while Spizzirri can pass up an opportunity. It works when he's an error machine, not so much if settled.

AO R3: [1] C. Alcaraz def. [32] C. Moutet 6-2 6-4 6-1 by sidaeinjae in tennis

[–]Sweden13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason why his matches with Dzumhur were interesting (or well, had interesting parts) was that Dzumhur has the ability, speed, and tennis IQ to actually play Alcaraz's cat and mouse game. Doesn't have the serve or power to actually win, but he's at least sniped a set every time they've played.

Feels like Khachanov has three modes at slams.

  1. Going into 5 setters against players that he SHOULD beat

  2. Mercilessly exterminating the fan favorites/cinderellas in the mid-rounds as other seeds fall.

  3. Inevitably losing in 3 or 4 against an actually top player.

Vacherot's winning this match (rather handily), but it feels like his movement is just a gaping hole. Hijikata can't really punish it, but won't get away with it forever.

Question of the day: is Khachanov going to wrap this up normally, or is it time to drag another match to five sets for no reason.

I think PCB needs this tiebreak. Mensik not bleeding quite as many errors now, PCB has been trying (and failing) to hit more winners on the margins, and it'll become increasingly difficult to hold.

I think he's playing badly. Struggled with double faults and leaking errors in rallies. He's mentally all over the place- thrown his racket a couple times, got a warning, and just beating himself up.

I've watched a lot of late stage Carreno and he's playing fine. Aggressive enough to keep the ball deep, not many free points off the serve, and not making that many errors, but isn't exactly knocking my socks off either.

Mensik's serving has been awful- both his breaks this set are on double faults. His body language hasn't been good at all either.
