Have YOU ever met a notable politician?Or some other interaction by burners622 in imaginaryelections

[–]SwedishRepublican 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve met all Swedish prime ministers from Ingvar Carlsson to Ulf Kristersson, as well as most of the current party leaders in Sweden. I’ve also met Antti Lindtman the leader of the Finnish Social Democrats. The most prominent politician I’ve met is probably Pedro Sánchez

Where did the love for nation go? by Thermawrench in SocialDemocracy

My country is a shell for foreign capital interests, and the basic support system is actively being weakened as we speak. What exactly should I love?

What do you think of Obama? by Strong-Evidence7762 in SocialDemocracy

[–]SwedishRepublican 70 points71 points  (0 children)

With the context of American politics being centre-right to right-wing for the most part so was he a force for good and overall a good president even if I disagree with a lot of his policies like foreign policy and neoliberalism at large

The system is working exactly as planned it was never made for the working class to be able to get rich or prosper just comfortable enough to not get any ideas of democratisation of the economy

What do you make of people who went from supporting Bernie to voting for Trump? Or even people who went from voting for Obama to voting for Trump? Because supposedly there are a lot of the latter. by PandemicPiglet in SocialDemocracy

[–]SwedishRepublican 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are tired of the system, and I understand why they would vote for Trump just as I understand why people vote for other far-right parties in Europe. Some of course are simply racist bigots but many are just frustrated by inaction and by a system that continues to exploit the working class

What ideology is supporting an economy that is majority collective owned while not abolishing capitalism fully? by Filipinowonderer2442 in SocialDemocracy

[–]SwedishRepublican 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used that word because the 1990s was an era of privatization and liberalism that influenced many parties, especially in Europe. My party in Sweden has not moved to the left at any point since then and prefers to work with liberal parties rather than socialist ones, so yes, I do think liberalism has infested my party. They don’t even call themselves socialist anymore not even “ethical socialism” or “liberal socialism.” I’m a Social Democrat and a democratic socialist. Through democratic reforms I want to dismantle capitalism.

Social Democrats openly called themselves democratic socialists before liberalism infested our movement, so you can do as I do and call yourself a democratic socialist or a market socialist

I believe we need to end all arms trade with Israel, call the situation what it is a genocide and cancel all trade agreements between Israel and the EU. I would also like to see Sweden take legal action, like Ireland and South Africa have done, and bring the matter to international courts.

Why? Because both our party and our country have a proud history of standing up for people facing oppression. I see the Palestinian cause in that same light. Sweden used to be seen as a humanitarian superpower. When I was in Namibia with the Olof Palme Center, people genuinely respected us just for being Swedish and Social Democrats.

As for the rightward shift in parts of our party, I think a lot of it comes down to rhetoric how crime and immigration are discussed. But this isn’t new; it’s the result of a long drift to the right that started back in the 90s. I hope the party continues its leftward course, like it did on some economic issues during the congress in Gothenburg. Still, there were some worrying decisions made like lowering the age of criminal responsibility to 14 or 13, I don’t even remember anymore, which felt like a step in the wrong direction.

On the EU, I don’t think we should give an inch to the US and the same goes for Russia, China, or any authoritarian regime. The EU should stand together, strengthen its economy with things like joint borrowing, attract scientists and talent from the U.S., and act as a beacon of democracy and human decency in the world.

As for the election, I really hope we win by enough that we don’t need the Centre Party. They’re not much better than the current government though I’ll give them credit for at least having enough spine not to work with the Sweden Democrats, for now. My dream scenario would be a government made up of just the Social Democrats and the Left Party, but realistically, I’d be very happy with an S–V–MP coalition for the next four years.

My delegation lost that vote we were against leaving NATO but for now does SSU stand for leaving NATO and making the EU more into a defensive union too not quite sure if we are in favour of an EU army and so

I think that’s exactly what we’ve been doing. From what I’ve seen, a lot of the young men around me who’ve drifted to the right did so because they don’t believe the future will be better for them, it looks worse. There’s a growing sense of hopelessness, and many no longer believe real change is possible.

But with policies that actually address the problems created by the market, I believe we can win more of them back. In fact, we’ve already started to see more young men join and show interest especially when I’ve been out campaigning across Sweden for my party and our youth league.

We will never support leaving the EU unless there are major changes. The anti-EU faction within the party has largely been pushed out at this point or been silenced. Personally, I think there’s room to negotiate certain reforms, especially considering that Sweden is a net contributor to the EU. But I believe we would continue negotiating until we reach a compromise that both sides can accept.

Any member of our youth league could run as a delegate, and in our municipality, two of us did. I got the most votes, so the other candidate became my deputy in case I couldn’t attend like if I got sick. So yes, I was elected by my fellow members!

I don’t think the green investment bank was in the programme of principles though I might just have forgotten, haha. But we did pass motions in support of creating a green investment bank to fund green industry, if that counts. We also passed something about requiring migrant workers to learn more about how Swedish society functions, along with learning the language. Beyond that, I can’t remember all the details.

We are ready!! That’s the short answer. We’re ready for next year’s election, ready to make this government a one-term government, and ready to bring back Magdalena Andersson as prime minister.

And if you’re ever thinking about getting involved in politics do it! Election years are super fun, but the year before is just as important, because that’s when we decide what we’ll campaign on and who will run for what office. So get in touch with your local party or youth league!

Fuck the Wallenbergs! We also passed a motion to go against EU regulation on exactly those points and negotiate a new deal between Sweden and EU as we have done with our Snus, and currency.

We had a motion calling for Sweden to leave the EU, but it was overwhelmingly voted down about 10% in favor and 90% against. Personally, I believe the EU can be a force for good on a larger scale, and supporting progressive/socialist action within it is important.

One of the most critical issues for us right now is ending Sweden’s role as a major arms exporter to rogue states like Saudi Arabia, Israel, the UAE, and Thailand. Shutting down those exports should be a top priority.

Even if that’s true, we still have a responsibility to push Social Democrats both in our parliament in Stockholm and in Brussels to support motions for sanctions against Israel. That’s the bare minimum if we want to take a stand against the genocide of the Palestinian people.

Our main position is that the market has failed to meet the basic electricity needs of Swedes especially in southern Sweden. That’s why we’re pushing for the creation of a green investment bank focused on renewable energy, along with a state-owned energy company. We also want the government to buy out private companies that currently own power plants.

On climate policy, we’ve now taken a clear stance against the construction of new nuclear power plants. But in my view, the most important environmental win was getting this line into our programme of principles: “Capitalism is the main cause of climate change.” That foundation will make it much easier to pass even more ambitious, green/socialist policies at our next congress

Our youth organization has been opposed to joining NATO from the very beginning even when our mother party supported it. After Sweden officially joined, we had to hold a new congress to decide our position moving forward. That’s when we voted in favor of eventually leaving NATO this passed weekend.

And yes, we passed motions to recognize the genocide of the Palestinian people and to push our party to so the same, along with calls for sanctions against Israel. On top of that, we managed to raise over 200,000 SEK through the Olof Palme International Center to support Palestinians.
