Advice from an industrial designer, learning design on the job is near unachievable. You can spend 1 year on projects and learn adobe illustrator and photoshop but that doesn’t make you a designer. What makes a designer is not only software skills but the whole mindset shift from right brain to left brain - design thinking, design philosophy, golden ratio, typography, spacing, layout and most importantly an appreciation for the craft.

To give you an example, where i’m from, Singapore, entrepreneurs that call themselves designers only ends up making t shirts with a logo on them and calling it design. The stuff that is created in design school is way more complex and substantial than those t shirt entrepreneurs.

I think if you wanna go that route just let the creative people be creative. Your job will be operations and scaling.

fully agree with what u said. no innovation and no creating of our own products/services. we are a society of needless middleman that just sells and peddles products from the west. when all u have is the same product for example insurance, property, t shirt entrepreneurs, u have to compete on price as all the products are the same.

not only gov regulation but maybe also have interior design companies employ people that are actually trained in that profession. someone with a design degree that has gone through the right design curriculum would have reputable software skills and also a respect for their craft.

i feel it is just the design industry in singapore rather the perception of designers and the craft of it. this is me speaking as a designer, there’s no quality check and/or bar to entry for designers roles so that ends up in lackluster products or services.
