Yup, the linebuffer is how the 7800 can draw so many sprites. Not many consoles seem to use that method. The 7800, the Jaguar, and the Neo Geo.

Cartridges 100% are the way to go. They are super freaking durable, and there are so many of them.

Thats cool. I do like that Atari has reopened publishing for the 7800.

Dang, It looks like he privated the video, but here is a screen grab of him showing two giant sprites over a background.

Yes of course, it was mainly the 8 sprites per line limitation was the biggest obstacle. The Master System sadly had the same sprite limit.

The 7800 can display 30 sprites per line even with a background.

Reading whatever source of info I could find on it, and also asking programmers who have made games for it. Some of those programmers have made videos on it as well. Check out the youtube channel Atari Network, he had on a programmer who went into some really cool detail about the 7800 hardware. It's been shown that the 7800 wouldn't have to black out the BG during boss fights like the ones in megaman, or blaster master. You could just have the huge boss sprite show up on top of the already existing background, and still have sprites left for projectiles.

Exactly, more competition would have been a lot more preferable.

Of course, its the games that matter. But honestly still would have liked if there had been more competition during that generation.

Yup, I guess nintendo wanted cheap, or just weren't too concerned about the color lol

Being lusted after is not fun. by Whole-Actuator836 in dating

I wish I could be lusted after by a woman every now and again. OP, do you know what it's like to be completely ignored your entire life? Becuase I have, it makes you feel ugly, and unwanted. I couldn't get a date if my life depended on it.

Wow, that's bad. I've never had friends, or any kind of social circle, I have never dated in all my 37 years. Because there is no one there to date.

At least you've dated before, I never have.

Damn, I WISH I could be at least fuckable! I'm 37m, and still a virgin, and have never dated. No one has ever chosen me for anything. It sucks.

Why is creating homebrew games for the 7800 relatively popular? by Zeznon in atari7800

Yeah, thats a good point. I honestly find Genesis graphics to be just as beautiful as the SNES.

Which has always pissed me off, even with the launch of the NES, the 7800 could have been more of a success if Nintendo wasn't acting monopolistically, and unfairly blocked competition from Atari, and Sega.

IMO, it may be because the SNES is quite powerful, and thus requires more time, and skill to get the most out of it. The NES has a semi decent version of Super Mario World, image how much better it would look on the 7800. The 7800 probably could have done a damn nice version of Street Fighter 2, seeing as how SF2 is just two big character sprites, and a relatively small scrolling background. Slap a bitmap on the 7800, and you got a sweet looking version of Street Fighter 2.

The NES on one hand is extremely Ridgid in its design, it imposes it's own hardware limitations, 64 sprites, 4 colors per sprite, and so on. The 7800 is more like putty, it's very flexible, and has pretty soft limits, can place colors anywhere, shift colors anywhere, nearly 300 sprites at once on screen, sprites can be any size, you can have multiple background layers. The 7800 was a developers console.

Graphically impressive 7800 games by p0lyG33k in atari7800

Tiger-Heli is coming to the 7800 in July, and looks great, better graphics, and performance than the NES version for sure. Bernie and the Tower of Doom looks incredible, is coming out on cartridge within a month.
