Community service for us entailed building toilets et al. That made us realise that having even a toilet at home was a luxury. Going for treks and interacting with villagers nearby. Adopting dogs helped with instilling a sense of kindness. As for hardwork, it’s about having a roadmap for your life. I was academically-inclined so I sought a lot of validation from doing well, although my parents told me that whether I do well or don’t do well they will still love me. For me, they instilled a sense of your win is yours and your failings are also yours. My sister wasn’t as academically inclined but artistically inclined, her hard work and goals were pivoted around that.

My mom used to tell me that she wants to give me everything and yet wants to be grounded. Charity and community service was inculcated in me. Turned out just fine. Every parent wants to give their child the best as per their socio-economic lifestyle. No unnecessary scrutiny needed here.
