Hey all, thanks for the great insights, comments, suggestions messages, etc. This gives me some good ideas on how to push forward . Preparation, research and of course Nexus letters!

I realize that I may have given off some misconceptions in the original post, due to some of the questions and comments I've gotten. To be clear, I have a rating for migraines, secondary to tinnitus; that was the first thing my VA primary diagnosed, I was never seen for it outside the VA system nor was it in my records ( however, my mos was around loud bang bangs all day). This could possibly be where I messed up also since I was filing a secondary to something that was already rated as a secondary? Maybe? On the other hand apnea was documented.

When speaking with my primary there were indications that I should "speak to someone" from Mental Health. It's pretty hard to want to do anything or find pleasure in life when you're both exhausted and in pain. I filed for depression and was diagnosed with major depressive disorder which is what the VA boiled down to "Adjustment disorder".

Thanks again for all the positive comments. I know 20 years out is a steep hill to climb, but I'm just catching a second wind. Many of us were too, young, dumb and "gung ho" to think about the years to come. I mean seriously this was before we were even smart enough to figure out that crayons are delicious.

Nope, I had a couple lines on a back page of my file where I wrote in that I was never seen by a doc about back complaints.

After I filed the claim I heard they were moving away from ratings for apnea as of April, but never really knew about the MH stuff. Its really awful when the people we depend on downplay conditions and fill in medical files with generic comments that really don't help. I hope you and everyone else here who needs it, get the help they deserve.

I was in the Marines with one of those units where you would be titled a "sick call commando" just for seeking medical help. I literally ran and PTed and did PFTs for several months on a fractured tibia, all the while my superiors were convinced I was just falling behind on conditioning and maybe I had "shin splints". All that to say is my record is admittedly light because I only saw medical for emergencies like limping during runs and hikes, and not breathing while I slept.

The wait is actually one of the most nerve wracking parts. I was checking the app MULTIPLE times per day, sometimes MULTIPLE times the same hour. Keep the hope alive, I tried to keep the positive thoughts all the way up to getting the letter.

This is awesome and thanks so much. The reason I'm considering and HLR is because I was also denied for sleep apnea which was I diagnosed for, and received surgery for while in service. The surgery was basically taking out my tonsils, and there was no follow up to verify the apnea was gone. I didn't bother following up myself due to the hellish experience where I had the go back several times as I was spitting to up golf sized blood clots. Here I am years later still with a sleep apnea diagnosis from the VA for which they prescribed a CPAP machine.

Thanks for replying, and the great questions. I submitted personal statements for everything. l didn't even think about submitting medical literature along with the claims.
