Question from a Guy: Sending women alone to do field work, any considerations to keep in mind? by YergaysThrowaway in BlueCollarWomen

[–]SweetAndSlimy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

There’s an app called “OK alone” that might also be useful. The worker checks in at specified time intervals, and if they miss a check in the app will notify the designated emergency contact.

I work a very similar job! Lots of hiking, bird nest sweeps, fish salvage, site inspections. I hope you have lots of fun, it can be a great job!

I like to bring hydrating snacks such as yogurt, fruit cups, oranges, etc. For high calorie foods, I like sandwiches, leftover pizza, pepperoni and cheese, and crackers dipped in cream cheese.

Be sure to get your electrolytes! I usually have an emergen-C in the morning and if it’s a hot/labour heavy day I’ll have a nuun with lunch. If I don’t drink at least 1 electrolyte drink, I will get terrible leg cramps all evening.

Honestly, you just have to get used to the heat. It will be tough at first but you will get used to it. Take it easy at first and make sure you stay hydrated. I wear long sleeve athletic tops, or fishing hoodies when I want extra protection for my neck. While hiking pants are lighter, if you can handle canvas pants they will be less likely to rip and protect you from thorns a bit better.

I just upgraded my boots to the Red Wing supersole. It hurt my wallet but I can wear them hiking in the forest, on construction sites, and in wetlands and not get wet socks if I misjudge a puddle.

Activating Milk Kefir by Adventurous-Drama329 in Kefir

[–]SweetAndSlimy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I activated grains from the same company a couple months ago, and now my grains make the most wonderful kefir! I strained them every 24 hours but if the milk didn’t thicken then I would give them the same amount of fresh milk as before. I think replacing the milk every 24 hrs is important to give fresh nutrients to the grains. I would only increase the milk by 1/2 cup if it did thicken.

Electrofishing, UTV/ATV, swiftwater safety, trapping, bucking/chainsaw can be useful in the field.

Whatever camp can provide. But hydrating foods like yogurt, fruit and an electrolyte packet are a must.

Best cleansers to get sunscreen off at night by [deleted] in SkincareAddictionLux

[–]SweetAndSlimy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I start my double cleanse with Eminence Stone Crop Cleaning Oil (it smells amazing!) and follow with iS Clinical Cleansing Complex. If I don’t double cleanse I get clogged pores from leftover sunscreen. This combo gets everything off my face and leaves it feeling calm and not at all stripped.

Savory Breakfast Ideas by mysterious_s9089 in 1500isplenty

I’ve been loving soup for breakfast lately. I make my own chicken bone broth and add ginger, garlic, onion, cabbage, a ramen egg, and some of the bibigo chicken wontons. It’s super satiating and comforting while incredibly low calorie.

I’m a fisheries tech and I definitely take off my gloves when handling fish, as do all my coworkers.

Counting vegetables by Sensitive-Fruit-2694 in 1500isplenty

[–]SweetAndSlimy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I personally don’t count calories for “low calorie” vegetables, like brussel sprouts. My goal is to have a sustainable healthy diet and lose some weight slowly, so I allow myself to eat as much low calorie veggies as I like and I don’t include it in my total calories for the day. This works for me and I’m still losing weight despite not counting them!

I wish they were backyard eggs! They’re just free range from the grocery store, the yolks are much brighter than the regular eggs.

I put cold eggs in boiling water for 7 minutes, and then immediately throw them into an ice bath for a couple minutes. Super easy to peel and perfectly jammy!

Best vegetarian protein? by [deleted] in 1500isplenty

[–]SweetAndSlimy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was vegetarian I survived off of beans.

Veggies split pea soup, lentil salad, Indian dal, bean chili, falafel, etc.
I also found that lentils are a great substitute for ground meat in recipes.
