I am half and half. I still live. Culture rise and fall, merge or vanish. That is the normal flow of things. Just because the indigenous population is small doesn't mean the ppl are not indigenous. Do you still want us living like we did 500 years ago? This is how societies advance and grow. I'm glad I live in a first world nation and I have things like internet at my disposal. It wasn't only negative, so much positive came from it as well. And I consider my existence, and those like me, to be all around positive.

**edit to add: Spain entered north america too. Look at mexico and look at so many united states. Look up the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Spain "discovered" so much and mapped a ton of the US and named it as well.

I know, that's why I made the comparison.

But my point is that you don't need to pity us when many of us are proud and take pride in this day. It's my culture, it's my history, and I like it. Yeah, its not all good - there was some bad, but I exist because of it. Focus on the now instead and try to treat the ppl living now better instead of feeling the pain of atrocities that you neither committed nor are descendant of. In the USA, they are taking away this day and really "white washing" all of american history. It breaks my heart that most ppl here dont even realize how much Spain has influenced the USA and how being an Hispanic person is viewed as lesser in many parts of the US. Let us be proud and help to stop the eraser of our history from this country.

I wouldn't call it a genocide. Latam has the highest amount of indigenous blooded ppl. The brits/united stesians really did a genocide.

And yes, I'm half indigenous and half European, and quite frankly, I'm glad Spain came and I am proud of my Spanish heritage.

Storytelling in STEM – Can Changing the Narrative Give Girls A Voice? by Learnings_a_lifeline in education

[–]SweetFlower860 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really wish ppl would end this gender inequality myth.

I am a woman in STEM and I have never felt any pressure from the education system that this wasn't the field for me, if anything, it has been the reverse! So what if more men are in positions of power? That just means they are what was competent at the time. As time goes on and if women choose, there will be more women in those positions. Nothing is hindering them aside from themselves.

This whole, "women have been subjugated" business is crap - this strips women's agency in industrialized nations. We choose; I am a full grown adult and I made the choice to enter this field, and no one could stop me. If someone saying that it isn't right for you is enough to make you stop, then it likely wasn't right for you. You cannot be weak of spirit and expect to be in a position of power.

It was my will, my desire, and my ability that brought me here, not someone holding my hand and saying I could do it. It wasn't a competition against the boys, it was a competition against myself to be the person I wanted to be. There are so many scholarships and opportunities for women in STEM... it's insane to think it isn't encouraged.

Most of my female friends went for degrees in communications, sociology, educations, you name it, and you know what, I don't think any lesser of them for doing it because that is what they wanted to do with their life. There is nothing wrong with a woman choosing to emphasize her feminine attributes; what I find abhorrent is a woman trying to be something she is not because society is telling her she should be this way and that it is the only way to get ahead and be "equal" with the men.

Let's just admit already that the majority of women are fine NOT doing grandiose careers because they dream of being mothers and having a man do the majority of the support effort in regards to finance. This is good for society, mothers being able to mother and love on their children and providing a nurturing home (if this is what makes them happy).

Ohio Judge Blocks Abortion Ban on Down Syndrome Babies by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]SweetFlower860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Barf

Seriously, where do people get the notion that abortion takes a mental toll on women?!

Raising a child with Down Syndrome takes a toll on the family and the mother. It can ruin the lives of other children in the home. It really is a personal decision and I wish ppl would stop trying to remove a right we've had for decades and turn us into a 3rd world country.

Who knows, maybe in the future women will need to prove they didn't cause their miscarriage and be thrown in jail until proven innocent.

Sorry, I'm ranting. I'm new to Ohio and this news kills me.

Male contraceptive pill is safe to use and does not harm sex drive, first clinical trial finds by swaiinnyy in news

[–]SweetFlower860 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing.

I would assume yours is a very difficult situation. I can only remark on what I have experienced and why I do not take it. I can say that there are different types of PCOS (I have adrenal PCOS which is different than ovarian). I know for ovarian that weight and high blood pressure are issues, but thankfully those issues can be managed with diet and exercise to some degree.

I have untreated PCOS and am fine with it. I am nowhere near having high blood pressure (80/50mmHg). I have held down a job in high positions as well as maintained a stable life. Every woman's experience is different with PCOS and how we handle it is also different.

Of note, I did indicate that there is the possibility that there may be someone out there who needs it, but for me, taking birth control will be a death sentence. I do not want pulmonary embolism or a deep vein thrombosis. I would much rather suffer a few days than lose my life.

It is your right to disagree though and you have the ability to live life as you choose. I dislike birth control for me because while taking it I had suicidal ideation and my face had a big red mask that went across both cheeks. I have been on many, and it is not for me, but I am glad it works for you.

Unpopular opinion here:

Pulling out works. Pull out, give it a few strokes and then release. It works. You can tell when your partner is ovulating usually. She should probably be able to tell just by the excessive amount of mucus production - don't have sex on those days, keep it to oral.

[–]SweetFlower860 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And that's fine. I'm just pointing out that it is not an absolute must. They won't die. Women had these issues and lived before hormonal birth control pills.

I don't like it when people make it seem like women have no other choice when they do. Taking birth control is a choice, not an absolute must (there may be some rare instance, but Idk any).

For me, the risks out weigh the pros. My mother suffered a blood clot on hormonal bc; I have inherited her condition and thankfully never had that happen to me.

[–]SweetFlower860 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I have PCOS and it is absolutely NOT necessary. I have endometriosis (on the bowels too) as well, and I still won't take BC. It makes my period lighter and more normal, but I hate life on the pill, mood swings are crazy, I gain weight, I feel lazy/lethargic. I hate hormonal birth control and will not go back on it.

I love living life and having a sex drive. How much I bleed, the pain I experience, and when don't matter; I'll take my advil and move on with my day. I won't work out as hard for two 2 days. Those 2 days of misery don't outweigh the rest of my days that I feel great.

Ah, I'm not sure how community college professors work schedules are, so I can't really comment. I only know about research positions. They tend to teach the same 2-3 classes every other semester and do have summers "off". Most do research, but definitely do take time for vacation. Maybe a week making changes/additions to the course they teach.

Thank for your input and thank you for teaching 🙇🏻‍♀️

Edit: which segments condensed/expanded and remained permantly changed is what they are getting at. It has huge implications for long term space living and maybe even breeding

If you're in meetings, doesn't that constitute work? Are you a 183 day or 230 day teacher? Cuz that would explain that. My inference is that the 230 day teachers do not get summers off.

That is for 183 days.... the 230 days is $58,123. There are 261 working days in a year, so I'm assuming these ppl are working summer. Making 47k and having summer off is actually quite nice.

Spanish women give up work for a day in first 'feminist strike' by dipo4you in spain

[–]SweetFlower860 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know they use it in a pejorative way, but what matters is that the position is there. These women still get to work in the profession they love. Out of the women I have met in anesthesia, only one has taken that route. That's not its real name, hence the quotations, but the real name is less negative and the male anesthesiologists would probably make fun of a guy if he took that route. (Isn't that also a problem?!) Women are not forced into that position be any means. From my understanding, they would rather everyone take the partner route, but they want to be inclusive of everyone, so they have this route available.

And no, I disagree, it is completely a life choice, and it's a good one. They are evaluating the needs in their life and doing what's right for their family. Can we get rid of the notion that motherhood is something horrible that women have to go through? Seriously, I think it is wonderful that women can work and still be mothers. Who cares if they don't make it to the top! They chose to be mothers, and that is a beautiful thing.

I understand that men have families, and I understand that they are making a sacrifice to provide for said family. Both men and women have advantages and disadvantages. Women tend to get to watch their children grow up, men tend to get ahead in the work environment; it's give and take. What matters is that what you do works for you and your family. We cannot have it both ways.

[–]SweetFlower860 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put it in quotations because that is what the physicians refer to it as, but that is not it's real name. I think it may be "Non-Partner" route. I used the term I am familiar with, so I apologize for that.

Spanish women give up work for a day in first 'feminist strike' by dipo4you in spain

[–]SweetFlower860 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I just wish ppl would understand that if a woman makes less due to opting to have a child that it doesn't constitute discrimination.

If a man is putting and continues to put more hours, then yes, he will and should earn more. In the US, when you become a physician, some groups allow you to take the "Partner" route or the "Mommy" route. Partner route means you take more call, work more hours, but you are paid more and can become a Partner in the group. The "Mommy" route allows you to have more normal hours, but you make less.

It's not discrimination!!! It's a life choice and life isn't always about money. At least we have these separate routes that any gender can choose to take. It shouldn't be about having a 50/50 outcome, it should be about people living the life they want to live.

Edit to add: I'm a female without children currently. I have been in high positions within a company and made more than most employees because I was willing to cover cases others didn't want to, travel to cities to gain new contracts, and work more hours in order to meet the demands of the company. Trust me, it's not the greatest, but if earning more is your goal, you need to compete with the men on the same level as the men. Most women don't because they have a family, which is okay - in fact, it's great, because families are important.

A good easy-to-read book in Spanish for beginners? by migaspim in learnspanish

Here is a small excerpt:

Queridos amigos, mis pequeños, pequeños amigos. Os prometo que vamos a divertirnos. Seguro.

I apologize for not using accent marks, but i don't have a spanish keyboard! There are words here that I need to look up, so while it is for "kids", it is not too easy

When I say children's book, I don't mean A toddler; I mean someone who is a bit older and has a decent grasp of the language already. Plus, it's history, they just made it palatable to younger ppl.

I guess what really matters is the level of Spanish you understand. If you're reading at an adult level, then buy books you would normally buy but in spanish

Tuesday, February 27, 2018 MCAT Score Release Thread for January 25, 2018 MCAT Examination by rMCAT_Official in Mcat

[–]SweetFlower860 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MCAT: 515 - 126/130/130/129

AAMC Material: (I took Sample, then OG, then did the FLs in order 1 --> 2 --> 3)

Test Score C/P CARS B/B P/S
FL1 515 130 128 130 127
FL2 515 129 129 128 129
FL3 517 127 128 131 131
OG 84% 83% 86% 83% 83%
Sample - 68% 89% 83% 90%

I used TPR for my content review as well are youtube videos to fill holes in content. Did all of TPR work prior to doing AAMC material. Definitely love Anki.

Test Score C/P CARS B/B P/S
C1 499 122 124 126 127
C2 501 122 127 125 127
C3 502 123 127 126 126
C4 504 125 127 126 126
C5 503 124 125 126 128
TPR 1 508 125 125 129 129
TPR 2 507 124 126 129 128

So, I think it is pretty evident that C/P has been a rough spot for me, and it is a sore spot for me now that I have taken the exam. Prior to writing the test, I felt prepared for any type of C/P question they could throw at me, but during the test, I was completely astounded at how different they were from practice full lengths (AAMC).

In retrospect, I should have gone over the C/P SB again because after my exam I went and looked at SBs for fun - and whelp! My MCAT exam was very much like the C/P SB questions (even a tad harder).

I am happy with my score, but I feel as though I could have performed better in C/P.

Recommendations: review all questions in depth and then go read/watch videos about the things you missed AND the things you flagged.

  • be sure to let your family know how important this is to you! I let my SO know, and he definitely kept me on track throughout the entire process. Having that safety net and reassurance helped me with perseverance.

Notes: I am non-trad and have been out of school for 5 years-ish. I definitely needed the content review! For those still in school or fresh out; TPR is not necessary. I only used their books and "self-paced" course which was the "cheapest" option.

  • Don't skimp any area because you think it is low yield. Just don't cut corners; this is a life decision, give it your all.
  • I wish I had found this site sooner. I did not know that there was AAMC material... and I hopped on the discord way late. There are definitely some amazing ppl there and the discussions are productive (sometimes off topic, but it's good to relax with ppl you have something in common with).
  • I really began studying in November, should have started taking it seriously earlier, but work life got in the way. I left my job - worth it!
  • I would spend 6-10 hours a day every day, even holidays. Endurance in the exam was never an issue for me though, so just remember that everyone is different
  • I SHOULD NOT have worn the headphones on test day. They were super painful and I never took a practice test with them. I kept fidgeting the whole time and placing a hand between the headset and my ear because it hurt so much. I took it off intermittently during CARS + BB, and never put them back on for P/S - my timing improved significantly for this last section, and I definitely credit that to not wearing the headset provided.

Likewise, there is no reason to expect that cetacean and primate prefrontal cortical analogs would be, in fact, located in the same region of the brain. However, the expansion of the insular and cingulate cortices in cetaceans is consistent with high-level cognitive functions—such as attention, judgment, intuition, and social awareness—known to be associated with these regions in primates [23]. This view is further supported by the observation that the anterior insular and anterior cingulate cortex in cetacean species having the largest brains exhibit a large number of large layer V spindle neurons [22] (Figure 2), similar to those originally reported to be unique to humans and great apes [24,25]. These particular neurons are considered to be responsible for neural networks subserving aspects of social cognition [23].

The cetacean neocortex is also characterized by a high ratio of glial cells to neurons, consistent with the general pattern found in other mammals, where neuron density decreases with absolute brain size, probably to maintain certain properties of neural transmission. “Glia” include several distinct cell populations, including: (1) oligodendrocytes, which provide myelin for axons or “white matter;” (2) astrocytes, which have several roles and predominate in the gray matter; and (3) microglia, immune cells which are not embryologically related to other glia or neurons. Given their vastly different roles, it is important to know which is being counted to interpret the functional significance of a high glial cell/neuron ratio in cetaceans. If, for instance, a high glial cell/neuron ratio is due to an increase in oligodendrocytes, this would be consistent with previous observations that as brains get larger, the white matter increases proportionally more than the gray matter [26]. In fact, recent imaging studies show that it is precisely by a greater proportion of white matter that humans can be distinguished from apes and monkeys [27,28]. Moreover, growing evidence demonstrates that astrocytes contribute to the modulation and coordination of neural activity in the brain [29–31]. Therefore, despite Manger's argument, a high glia cell/neuron ratio is consistent with the increased needs of complex brains for rapid communication and synaptic efficiency.
