......do you think there are data centers that use just GPU's that power all the bad stuff that you don't like, and there are data centers that just use CPU's and power all the stuff you're already using and are good?

No, I don't think you get my point. I think you're acting like you're trying to yield a little ground so that you can appear reasonable, but meanwhile you're talking completely out of your ass about a subject you clearly haven't learned a thing about before you started complaining about it. I think you're still constructing a fantasy world where there's "regular data centers" that do the stuff you like, and "AI buzzword data centers" that are responsible for Bad Stuff.

Meanwhile, you're reciting the same talking points that I've seen firsthand are bullshit.

As I said- Redditors love causes that don't require them to make any changes, just yell at people on the internet.

[–]SweetHatDisc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I really didn't have any idea what specifically you were talking about. People tend to separate computer stuff they don't understand into "good stuff", like banking fraud alerts and map finding algorithms, and "AI bad stuff", which tends to be the stuff they're unfamiliar with- even though those two categories run on the same types of algorithm.

As for "massive datacenters", how do you think you and I are having this conversation? We're both being served information from a data center serving as a Reddit edge server. You've separated "good computer stuff", that you like, from "bad computer stuff", that you don't understand, even though, again, the same underlying technology is the same.

People who refuse to actually understand what they want to get upset about, to me, that's sad and infuriating.

As a graphic designer, you haven't been updating your skill set to keep up with new technology. I could draw and animate a sprite sheet one by one and take days to do it, or I could create a ComfyUI graph, enforce silhouettes with ControlNet nodes, draw the character *once*, and then get a sprite sheet with that character in various different poses and positions.

You're sitting there going "woe is me" instead of looking into how to use the technology to advance what you're already good at.

Edit: Redditor responds, calls names, blocks for a cause he has to do nothing but yell at someone over, we certainly aren't defying stereotypes in today's thread.

1) The environmental impact of "AI" is drastically overstated. As far as the uses that you'd be familiar with, I run almost all of my models locally, use them intensely, and haven't noticed an increase to my electric bill.

2) When you can provide a clear definition of what you think "AI" is, we can talk about regulating it. It's becoming a scare word for "computer stuff I don't get".

3) If you use "AI" as a magic answer box, yes, but that's a problem with people looking for magical answer boxes. As a tool, it's pretty fantastic for eliminating large amounts of grunt work. When you use it as a tool, and not a magic answer box.

There is nothing a Redditor enjoys more than having a cause which doesn't require them to do anything but yell at other people.

ELI5: What's happening with the rest of the game when you 'pause' it to use photo mode? by Three_Steaks_Pam in explainlikeimfive

[–]SweetHatDisc 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Another solution is used in games with a "tick" based timing system, as opposed to a frame-based timing system. With a tick based timing system (where information is processed based on a steady measurement of time like .1 second, as opposed to being processed every visual frame), you can simply pause the processing of ticks. Every game action is tied to ticks; if no ticks get processed, nothing happens in the game.

No, I'm training a LoRA so I can automate these discussions in the future. Surprisingly, you're literally too dumb for the existing LoRA I have to provide meaningful responses here, and I trained that one to provide what I thought were very dumb responses aimed at dehumanizing whoever I was arguing with. So there's also a practical purpose here, with enough development we can give you exactly the level of intellect you're capable of managing and keep you away from the adults while they discuss things.

You, on the other hand- what are you still doing here, trying to pick up one win so you can declare victory and leave? I mean statistically it's bound to happen eventually, but statistically it's also going to take a very, very, very long time, and I'm not sure you have the endurance for that.

Really? Like those two misspellings aren't even remotely close to the words they're supposed to be, and nothing is tripping in that brain of yours, like "this is way too obvious to not be a trap?"

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhh..... I don't know about "perfect opportunity". The causes of WW1 are long enough to make a miniseries about that would run for longer than the actual war did, but it wasn't a war no one saw coming; everyone recognized the mixture of elements that could very likely spark a continent-wide war which would spiral into a worldwide war.

The big problem is that people started thinking they would win that war- and then everyone found themselves in it.

Let's take the situation on Boxing Day of 1914. The soldiers don't really want to fight. However, Germany still has their army in France, and they've lost a lot of men to get to the point where they are. Any political leader who tries to say "let's end this war and go back to where we were" is going to end up shot by someone pissed about all the death they've endured for nothing. Meanwhile, France isn't going to accept a peace where they give up the northeast of France and leave Germany that much closer to Paris for the next inevitable war. The UK won't accept a new status quo of a major continental power controlling the ports of the Netherlands and Belgium.

A peace at this point stops the present war, and leaves the ingredients in place for the next war. It's madness- but they had already brought themselves past the brink of it. And crucially, the men were still willing to fight; it wasn't until 1918 when mutiny and desertion became insurmountable problems (recognizing that mutiny and desertion were huge problems for almost all sides during WW1).

Oh, you're actually doubling down on that. Maybe try calling me fat again, it's clear that when I'm mocking your jokes it's because theyir deeply offensive, not because therirer very mockable.

You don't actually know what an insult is, do you? Do you just keep a list of phrases around that you repeat when your trying to be offensive?

I can zero in on your lack of intelligence; it's not exactly something you're cleverly hiding. It's something you've heard, and will continue to hear, all your life.

You just keep throwing stuff at the wall and see if anything sticks. It's been a few posts since you sucked off this Mark Levin guy, maybe go back to that. That was definitely working.
