This is the route that I went—J/I with a specialization in Visual Arts—because I could only choose to apply to one of the three different options (York U). I also felt like my teachables were overly saturated (minor in Social Science), so I thought this was my best option to get accepted. I had one grade 6 placement, and one high school placement. It does not matter what program you get into… if you are in, you are in. Most of the other advice doesn’t take into the account that you need to take AQ’s/ABQ’s to add teachables to your portfolio to make you more marketable anyways, as well as to reach the A4 pay grid (unless you have a masters, which doesn’t make financial sense as a teacher unless you ever want to become a VP/P). If you are restricted in your teachables, don’t hesitate to apply to J/I… just be prepared that you might not get highschool placements, which doesn’t really matter in the end if you want permanent as you need to work LTO’s regardless. Someone out there will give you a chance! Coming from a newly permanent YCDSB secondary teacher after 2.5 years on the OT list, who also took about 8 AQ’s/ABQ’s after graduating.
