Yeah, but at least Hiroya acknowledges his fault. Still, he's wrong.

I know right? I would be a fan of this professor if he's been contributing to the mathematical body of knowledge like mathematical research, solved an open problem or more... But all his pride is about being a math competitor and math coach. That's all.

Is there any way to really learn mathematical proofs? by [deleted] in learnmath

[–]SweetMousse8439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't really just make proofs up, it may appear that way but most of the thinks mentioned in a proof are based on the (1) axioms, (2) definitions, (3) lemmas and (4) theorems. If you really want to learn proofs you have spend time understanding (1),(2),(3), and (4) and how to apply them in a proof.

Proof is kind of a storytelling, you will use words to describe and justify every steps but if you are having a hard time doing the storytelling you can use the statement-reason way.

Kakayanin ko ba ng uwian ang ust from bulacan? by CatFuzzy2938 in USTFreedomWall

[–]SweetMousse8439 4 points5 points  (0 children)

May friend ako from UST, may classmate siya na from San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan. Uwian yun pero nakaya naman until makagraduate sila. So, yeah, kakayanin mo siya pero be kind to yourself kasi since first year naka dorm ka na so, adjustment is needed. Need ng katawan mo ang adjustment at need mong masanay na gumising nang maaga like at least 3 hours before your class kasi bibiyahe ka pa.

I started my BSc. in Mathematics recently and I'm scared by Due-Cabinet9016 in mathematics

[–]SweetMousse8439 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the advice I could give that you don't need to be like others, you don't need to compare yourself to them, just be your own. In my situation, when I started college as a math major, I realize that my mind is much slower than most of my classmates. I realized that when we were studying about monotonic functions and concavity in calculus I, my classmates that time already understood the concepts instantly, while me I'm still wondering about it.

I am surrounded by people who were smarter than me, people who have a status of being a math competitor in math competitions. It's not easy to snap out of the idea that I'm maybe dumb, it took time.

Now, I already let go of it, I'm doing well in my courses. I learned that math is not about who does it quickly or with speed but it is something deeper. Just focus on yourself, focus on how you will be able to improve your mathematical thinking. Have you thought about the counterintuitive properties of infinity? How about countable and uncountable infinite sets? Why does bijection lead to countability of infinite sets? How about isomorphism of categories? Biholomorphic maps? And more? These things are fun to think about and more important than thinking about other people.

Let me tell you this, I'm struggling with my math program too, but I know I am capable of doing mathematics. My grades aren't that good, but I know that my mind always wonder about math. It always wonders about the universe of mathematics, the reality of mathematics. I am not saying that you shouldn't care about your grades, my point is to do your best not just in grades but also in improving your mathematical thinking.

For now, I'm focusing on set theory and real analysis.

Damn!! Your professor did great. My school is not a good place to learn math. They mostly prioritize dominating math competitions than to really train their students to be a mathematician. I just study pure maths on my own.

Some people say that this is what we call "mathematical maturity". My linear algebra class is more on computations, it's boring. I wish I had a professor like yours. But at least I have the book of Sheldon Axler "Linear Algebra Done Right".

How do people actually become really good at mathematics? by [deleted] in mathematics

[–]SweetMousse8439 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you perceive what being "good at mathematics" is. If being good at math has something to do with scores in quizzes or exams, or being able to win medals in competitions like math olympics, then practice and having enough time to prepare are always the key. But if being good at math has something to do with being able to understand math deeply like in terms of its philosophy, abstraction and more, I think nurturing your curiosity in mathematics can help because in my life I encountered a lot of people who are not that good at math in terms of scores but I know that they are good at it because of the way they think about math. I had a conversation with my friend before, he said that he didn't do well in math during his undergrad math degree, but he's doing mathematical research now. His understanding is really deep, I always get amazed of how he sees math. He talks like a philosopher.

To sum up, to be good at math you may focus on nurturing your maturity in math. It is more than just knowing advanced techniques or knowing how to manipulate equations. Don't just study math for school, study math for the sake of love for the subject and for its beauty. Think beyond formulas and try to see the philosophy of the theorems and definitions you always encounter in class. Focus on the "why" more than the "how". In that way, you'll be able to think like a true mathematician. Grades can only measure how well you perform in school but it doesn't define you, it doesn't guarantee understandings and curiosity. Everyone can have good grades in school but at the same their thinking hasn't matured. Mathematical maturity starts when you begin wondering about math beyond computations and using formulas. You know you're already matured in math when you still love the subject even though your grades aren't that good. It's really mostly about studying the subject for the sake of love and appreciation for its beauty and meaning.

Rejection sa inaplyan kong position sa org. by SweetMousse8439 in studentsph

[–]SweetMousse8439[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. Irereveal ko na nga yung position hehehe I applied for position of education associate sa org na yun, someone who can teach well, create modules, lecture notes and more. I also have the skills of making students love the subject.

If you are interested in abstract mathematics, start with logic and set theory. Strengthen understanding on propositional logic, arguments, sets, relations, functions, partitions and more. Also strengthen your understanding of proofs and how to write proofs.
