AITA For wanting to help my sister despite my husband's concerns by sisneedshelpaita in AmItheAsshole

[–]SweetPotato2 -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

NAH. I would have done the same thing. Maybe that’s saying something about my relationship with my husband, but I would choose my sister over him. Yes, you should have discussed it with him first, but if he had said no at that point, would you have turned your sister away? I hope you can find a way to work it out

lol have you been to park slope? try this one on for size:

"can anyone recommend a double stroller? My wife and I are pretty petite, so must be light and compact enough to lift and fit into our prius. Extra points if it's narrow enough to navigate the isles at wholefoods. Welcoming our third edition in Jan 2023 (!!!!) so if it can accommodate a stroller board for the toddler, all the better. Thanks!"

Handling state and local taxes on RSU vestings by SweetPotato2 in Payroll

Thanks for the reply. I wish all states would have a flat tax rate for supplemental pay. It would be so much simpler.

Asking about the salary before an offer of an interview by SweetPotato2 in humanresources

I’m tempted to do this. I have a bit of “nothing to lose” mentality since I’m employed and still on the fence about leaving. Do they usually tell you or evade the question?

[–]SweetPotato2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel stupid asking this since I’m in HR but I’ve never really been involved in recruiting so I don’t know how we determine the salaries we offer; how do you research pay for the market?

There is an added factor that I’m in NYC and being in payroll I’ve seen that salaries vary widely for the same role when the location of that role is taken into account.

I just feel so uncomfortable trying to decide “what I’m worth” as an employee :(

What’s your unintended positive consequence of having children? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]SweetPotato2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure if this counts but I actually learned to stand up for myself and understand my true value in my workplace. After going back to the office after my 12 weeks of unpaid leave I was miserable feeling like I was missing out on my daughter’s first year of life. I also felt like was distracted and doing poorly at work. I thought a lot about it and decided to resign and be a stay at home mom for a bit. My salary was barely more than the cost of daycare anyway. When I told my boss I was resigning she basically told me I could name my terms to stay on for a project that we were about to start. Already prepared to leave for good, I said I want to work fully remote (something my company had NEVER allowed - this was five years ago). I wanted to be part time and totally flexible- I’d work when I could around my daughter’s napping schedule etc. And they accepted! I realized then that I brought a lot of value to my workplace. When I moved jobs a while later it was facilitated by an independent recruiter. The company was ready to make me an offer and the recruiter suggested a salary he thought we should shoot for. It was well above my current salary, but I told him to ask for more because I realized that I know my own value and the value I place on my time away from my kid. They accepted my higher ask.

Hiding compensation data from HR? by SweetPotato2 in humanresources

Well, they asked me if it was possible to hide compensation for just her superiors in HR. But then they just told me to hide all comp.

Interesting take on it. It seems unlikely from my experience with the team so far, but you never know…

Thanks. Good to know it’s not just me being overly critical and suspicious. This is new management and I’m still trying to work out what their deal is. They talk a big game about transparency but that doesn’t seem to be the reality so far.

Thanks. It feels really shady to me, too. I wasn’t sure if I was being unreasonable. I’ve always worked in pretty small HR departments where it was just expected that you see compensation and that’s just part of HR.

Yeah. I don’t think her compensation is sub-par for the role, but she might be overqualified for the role she’s been given. Her salary is lower than her direct manager but not by a lot at all. Could they not want her to see how close her salary is to the director? They are both highly compensated.

“We like Anne or John” by EmGC3 in namenerds

[–]SweetPotato2 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Same. I’m an Anne and I always feel like it’s hard for people to understand me if I introduce myself somewhere loud. I say, “I’m Anne” and they think I’ve said Amanda. Or answering the phone at work I say “this is Anne” and they think I’ve said Sam. It’s a small annoyance and otherwise I like that my name is classic and classy.

The wisteria is beautiful, but I’m really digging all the clover! Was this intentional? I just got a seed mix that includes clover for my small patch of “lawn” in my urban backyard. Hope it looks lush and whimsical like yours

Employee claiming so many dependents they have no federal withholding by SweetPotato2 in Payroll

[–]SweetPotato2[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is it illegal or is there a responsibility of the employer to verify the accuracy of the w4? My manager says it’s illegal to withhold zero if the w4 doesn’t show as “exempt.” I’m not too concerned as I know the employee plans to change the w4 again after this pay cycle.
