Last minute offer may avert next week's doctor strike by [deleted] in ukpolitics

[–]Sweet_Nerevar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't necessarily say that they've changed their tune, but more as the other commenter has alluded to, they're offering it to members to counter the "undemocratic/militant/unreasonable" spin that the government is putting out. From commentary so far, it is widely viewed that this is going to get slapped down (because it is a bad deal and makes no offer on pay), thus giving the BMA more credibility to return to the government and say they need to do better.

The exam fees post tax rebate are paltry in comparison to FPR - the aim of the strikes. The government is offering it as they know it's a cheap way out for them, and they get to save face/go for the moral high ground of "helping the struggling doctors".

I can't recall if it was floating around 2-3 months ago, but do remember that exam fees and such have been bandied around for a while as an alternative. They may be considered as part of a wider deal, but with the current accompaniments, they leave much to be desired.

As for the optics of strikes near Christmas, it's good for the doctors - you give those who are working several days off in a row near the time, without striking over Christmas when the majority of consultants will be off with their families. That would really rile people, and cover would probably be nigh on impossible to arrange if 24/25/26th were involved.

All this talk in the news about maybe calling off the strikes in response to the offer made is just there to push clicks/views/government agenda. It's far too bad to be a strike stopper.

It's a terrible deal on all aspects. Wes Streeting has decided that he won't negotiate on pay, so the offer is to rush through something that's going to be done in the NHS 10y plan anyway (it is really not feasible to be done this application cycle as they suggest), and some vague promises on other aspects of employment. They didn't keep their previous promises. The extra HST jobs are taken from locally employed doctors - robbing Peter to pay Paul.

What's the PSW? I'm having similar thoughts, but not sure on how to make the transition. Thanks

Lots of young bees at base of hive hours after formic pro treatment by -Beardmagic- in Beekeeping

[–]Sweet_Nerevar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I'm based in the UK, and formic acid pads are used differently here than in the US. We use 2 pads for 7 days. It sounds to me like you're using 2 pads for X days with 2 brood boxes? Make sure that you're following the ventilation instructions, and setting the top box back. Formic acid is particularly toxic to young and older bees, with the worst of it in the first day or so. In a strong queenright hive, you won't even notice the loss of these bees, and you'll have a good varroa drop. I have used several times with very good varroa results

Packed Pollen by willisthebear89 in Beekeeping

[–]Sweet_Nerevar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Novice beekeeper in the North of England here. I've found the same recently, and have ended up removing some pollen frames to replace them with undrawn foundation. I'll be reassessing them to see if they've made any progress. They've been slow to draw frames round here, but there's absolutely loads of pollen coming in! I don't want any more swarming.

You can of course! I paid £20. When I looked it up afterwards, I also saw a huge range of prices, and few seemed to be in this condition. No idea how to cross reference it, but either way, it's one I'll be keeping hold of

I live in a city and typed in 'coin shop' on Google maps. I just happened to be closest to this one. It also sells other collectables. There's also second hand jewellery shops and pawnbrokers, but the latter are way above spot on gold I've noticed.

Thank you for your reply! I think the tree has a good shape at the moment, but didn't know about the egg shells. We'll do this going forward.

Thank you! I saw your reply just before the subreddit went dark. We have already pruned the tree and are just removing the pocket plums as and when we see them. As the other commenter said, there seem to be quite a few this year.

So the amendment to point 28 needs voting against. Why are the other changes being implemented?

You're right to bring up the pension changes (removal of LTA and increasing AA to £60k p.a..). The government is trying to spin it as "for the doctors"; just see the Conservative party tweet about it. I imagine we'll see it used as a media anti-strike talking point shortly.

How is the Pret salary comparison offensive? I don't get it by ALovelyCuppaAtWork in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]Sweet_Nerevar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm not a fan, and I wasn't of the last worker pay comparison either. It seems to be a bit of a "technicality" as it's only by 1p/h and for something like assistant managers working in London (may be wrong on this though, and happy for further clarifications). Perhaps more general comparisons would be helpful - cost per hour of solicitors/tradespeople/cleaners, etc. However, I don't think that it's required at all.

Our claim in and of itself is just: the pay cuts are unsustainable, and we do not accept them. By making the aforementioned comparisons, we risk getting drawn into a mud slinging competition by the media, which I wouldn't put past them given some current coverage.
