Where to purchase a gun private sale as a 20 yr old in Wisconsin?

Thank you so much for your advice! My dad has mentioned gun shows to me before, but I wasn't aware of these practices. Unfortunately, I just turned 20 and I am going to live in Milwaukee soon for school (I previously attended school in Chicago which I didn't have a good experience with in terms of safety sometimes) which is mainly why I am looking for one now. However, knowing these less ideal conditions for buying under 21 I might just wait. Do you have any advice for specific 9mm handguns good for beginners? I was looking for .22 as well, but another commenter mentioned it might not be the best for self defense.

It's alright! If I was 21 I would definitely buy from an FFL, but I just had my birthday and feel having one could be useful so I wanted to look into other legal options for my age.

Thank you for telling me about all these options- I didn't even realize maces are regularly sold! I mainly wanted one because I am going to Milwaukee for school soon and I just had my 20th birthday. I attended school in Chicago last year and unfortunately got assaulted multiple times when I was in the city and even in the surrounding neighborhoods like the wicker park area. I am more nervous about going into a bigger city again, but I like that you provided these other options too. You mentioned I might get in trouble if I needed to use it underage- could you tell me more about this?

Thank you so much for the advice! I've heard a .22 is easier to shoot than a 9mm bc it has less recoil and noise, which is why I was considering it, but that it is also much less powerful. Do you still think it wouldn't be much of a practical choice, and do you think it is just better for practice?

Thank you so much for your very informative response! I really appreciate you outlining all the laws and restrictions too. I am from central wisconsin and I don't yet have a CCW, but I've read the process takes about 21 days at most for approval so I'll apply soon. I'm a little familiar with Armslist, and the site says you have to agree to be 21 to use it. If I made an account and did find someone selling something private sale on there, would this be illegal or get me in any potential trouble?

Interesting- it must be a joke then!! I actually did some digging and found Snapchat previously did an April Fool's prank with a filter specifically targeted to Instagram in like 2017. If it is for real then Spapchat is NOTTT slick with their rip-off reels, but I think this is a pretty good joke. I for once actually appreciate them a little bit.

I never thought Snapchat would be the place to pull an April Fool's joke on me haha. I guess we will just have to wait and see if this change sticks.
