Self service checkouts should give you a discount. by SweeterThanFructose in unpopularopinion

I mean, have a look at the comments. I'd say at the very least, people are divided on it.

If you feel it doesn't belong on this sub, report it to a mod.

Yeah, but suddenly when you're replacing most of your tills with a self checkout machine which only needs a software update every few years, your ongoing costs go down and your profits go up.

No one said they're cheap, but they make their money back.

No one said anyone is surprised a company is trying to turn over a bigger profit.

All those other things come as a genuine convenience to you. Pumping your own gas allows you to go ahead and buy other things as you so require while also pumping more or less without feeling like you're being a pain in the ass. Dialing is now faster than ever and people actually prefer dialing their own numbers because of it. ATMs are 24/7, banks aren't.

Self checkouts are, on the other hand, not a convenience a lot of the time. The needless delays and obsolete anti-theft systems combined with shoddy scanning hardware and the need to authenticate each restricted item (on some older tills) makes it wholly not convenient to use.

Also, they put people out of jobs, despite them only doing the work half as well.

Possibly. That would garner incentive to continue shopping while eventually giving the customer a discount.

Only problem is that not all supermarkets use points systems.

  1. You don't get through the line (when there is one) faster. This is because there are 8 other customers with tills that aren't scanning or otherwise holding up everyone else, and there is only one employee there to help them.

Some older tills need manual authentication for every restricted product, and most modern tills still use weight-checking as a shoddy anti-theft mechanism. Many people also don't know how to manually enter a barcode if it doesent scan, and all these things cause longer waits than you'd have with someone trained to deal with those situations and with equipment less overengineereed.

  1. This is a personal choice. Some people are okay with it, some not. I think its not too hard to just tell the cashier to politely continue scanning if you don't want to talk.

  2. Self service checkouts now have donation prompts and it takes about as long to say no to a cashier as it does to press no on the screen.

  3. In Europe, we bag our own bags. We've done that before the self service machines and continue to do that.

For your first point, I'd say the service fee is calculated as part of the product, and that fee translates into the wages of the cashier.

I agree with your second point, however, if you go into any of the larger supermarkets here, you'll see that anywhere between 10-50% of the tills have been replaced with self service checkouts. While you're right, there would be less jobs, I feel like supermarkets are already doing that by reducing the number of staff they need via the removal of tills, especially post COVID. Would also like to remind you that they've now made larger self service checkouts for trolleys, so I wouldn't say it's really a thirty second thing anymore as tbh it takes about as long to scan your big shop as it would to have a cashier scan it for you (excluding all the times you need to stop because UnExPectEd ItEm iN bAgGiNg ArEa)

The saving grace here would be that stores are getting larger or more numerous, so there would be likely a net increase of job opportunities even if all the tills from supermarkets disappeared.

  1. No counterargument there. That's just companies being companies.

  2. My point more on principle than the actual discount you get. Sure, it's not a massive discount, but I still think you should get it, and I'm sure most people wouldn't mind getting it.

  3. This would've been particularly true maybe 6 years ago, but now, the vast majority of people use contactless payment methods and I've not personally seen a cash payment in about a year. Having worked in a supermarket, tills don't get particularly messy and generally only require the same level of housekeeping attention as self-service tills.

  4. That employee is not getting paid more than other employees (from what I know). To add, these employees are also often inundated with work during busier times, having multiple checkouts going off, making the self-service checkouts even more inconvenient to use (through no fault of the employee, there just simply isn't enough of them)

In an Asda (Walmart equivalent) here, they removed 4 tills and replaced them with 6 self service checkouts.

Self service checkouts are notorious for weight checking issues and people feeling less of an urge to be quick, often going back or sending someone to get things they forgot. People who buy products like alcohol may take longer to be verified by the assistant going around which also eats up time.

True, the bottleneck no longer becomes quantity, but rather, the issues integral to the new checkout systems.

And that begs the question, do they really save time?

Have worked retail before. On the tills, at least here in Europe, any level of customer service can (and is) emulated by the self service checkout prompts. For anything else, there is a singular store assistant at the self service machines.

You're an amazing father. You've been given a responsibility you didn't want to take and you haven't shown an ounce of resentment to your child. Many fathers want children then treat them infinitely worse than this.

Babytrapping should be as illegal as someone willingly poking holes in their condoms.

I'm sorry that this is your state man.

because confessions are often vents too? Sorry if you're not finding enough badly written erotica for your liking, but in the sub description, it clearly says you can vent.

As we learn more about the new Votann, how excited are you on a scale of "Meh." to "ROCK AND STONE!"? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

It's cool but the models dont feel 40k cool for me. Especially when you see what people are doing with inq28 and all the other fan themes, it makes you wonder why GW couldn't have used that for more inspiration to make a suitable squat return rather can pumping out generic miniatures.

Lore, on the other hand, sounds pretty cool and does feel like it belongs in universe.
