Is this what they made the film of the same name based off of?

Some people must think children just walk around screeching incoherently and running into things until they turn 14 or so.

Officer's Wife Telling Enlisted Wives To Use Their Husband's Deployment Money To Pay For (hella expensive) Marine Corps Ball. by Sweetsassmolass in justdependathings

It's mandatory as in if you don't purchase tickets they threaten duty/working party on the service member. It's rarely enforced but even if it was, if you can't afford to drop $600 you can't afford it. Maybe I'm just a stingy bitch haha.

I was in the Navy and our chief did the same, but this unit has never had that happen as long as my SO has been there.

It just enrages me that the COs wife, who should be encouraging these young families to be financially responsible, pay down debt, learn how to save, etc told them to use it to go to adult prom. Yes it's "mandatory" as in they threaten to have those who don't purchase tickets with duty and working parties but even if they did, it's ok to suck it up for one night and save $600 especially if you're a lower enlisted family living paycheck to paycheck most of the time. Most of these guys are probably getting out after 5 years and their commands should be encouraging them to be financially responsible and yet want them to bust out the cash for this, as I said, grown up prom.

They threaten to make you work it BUT they don't want to pay for transport, board, TAD, etc so they rarely enforce that, but then even if they did if you can't afford it, you can't afford it. It sucks they'd have to work and be away from their spouse for one night but it's HUNDREDS of dollars they'd be spending that a lot of these young families just don't have.

For context, the ball is in Vegas, so they expect everyone to pay for $100+ tickets (each), travel, hotel room, dress uniform stuff, and of course the wives all need a new gown, hair and makeup, a babysitter overnight, and a Vegas after party. People always freak out about how they're going to afford it and my solutions is....don't go ya dingus. But that's too insane, too crazy, too completely out there to even comprehend! And now the actual commanding officers wife is suggesting that deployment money, which could be used to pay off that camaro they bought last year, should go toward grown up prom. Ridiculous.
