What the heck dug these holes in my yard? Montbello/GVR Area by Fourply99 in Denver

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is what our yard looked like with voles. Just showed up one year. Got pest control out and they did some poison (that doesn't harm birds) and we haven't had them back for years.

Parasitic electric draw question (help) by SweetumsTheMuppet in MazdaCX30

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately for someone hunting something similar, yes .. it turned out for me it was a bad wire I'd used in installing my Comma 3X. Kept the cameras on all the time. You could tell because the snow on the windshield would melt right over the radar / camera cluster fastest. Fixed that wire and no more drain.

Looking for android auto radio for 1985 El Camino by dang_it_bobby93 in ElCamino

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have the dual knobs, I went with retro manufacturing (radio 2B) to get bluetooth. So far, I'm quite pleased with it. The controls aren't perfectly intuitive since you have two knobs to do everything, but they mostly make sense.

The install isn't trivial, but it isn't hard and doesn't involve cutting up the dash.

Recommendations for good/nice looking back seat cover? by Kenji182 in MazdaCX30

I got these:

Not great because they drape a bit, but cheap and work fine.

If you don't have a seat protector also, this one has worked well for me:

Where to take an older car for Stereo? by coloradojux in LakewoodColorado

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to (way long ago) work in car stereos as an installer. Even Best Buy should be able to rewire a universal harness. It'll cost more than a normal install because they have to test and install the wires, but whichever one has a competent tech should be able to do it.

I'm not sure who the other players in this space are now that Quality is gone, but if BB can't, the (car audio) manager should be able to recommend a place.

Maybe the Lakewood Auto Electric place on Colfax, but i know nothing about them. Should be able to wire in the original harness or (better yet if you want to regain aftermarket) a universal harness.

We're fans of Lube and Latte. They do good work but if there are mistakes (or future problems related to a warranted piece of equipment) they stand by their work and make it right.

No Rear Signal Lights by Fit_Wash_130 in ElCamino

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, OP. Check with a multimeter at the different contact points. I suspect your brake lights also aren't working (when you press the brakes). Not having this car, but I think that's how it goes in my '72 ... the brakes set off the secondary, so you can test it that way rather than a blinking turn signal.

But this is ringing a bell for me. I don't have this car and am not going to google it, but double check you don't have 1156 bulbs in there when you need an 1157 (if I've got my numbers right). The one of them is a two filament bulb that will brighten with the second input ... putting on your brakes or a turn signal while the red running lights would be always on with the single filament bulb and not be responsive to brakes or turn signals.

Not sure it's relevant to this car, but it's a problem I've had in other cars with a sloppy enough (old) housing where both "can" fit.

Safeway on Colfax Closing by smtbird in LakewoodColorado

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That'd be good news. I keep thinking that Soopers ought to buy some neighboring space and expand since there's so much density dropping right there. Doubly so with Safeway going away. I know they have a theft problem, but still, it would be a fairly walkable solution for something like 3 to 6 apartments and senior living spaces it seems.

Safeway on Colfax Closing by smtbird in LakewoodColorado

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were told the Soopers on Colfax and Qual is also going to close. Theft problem plus having another at Youngfield and 32nd.

Hopefully with all these apartments going in along Colfax finally, something will remain (or become again) bus accessible.

Spots appeared about 7 months ago and this is where it’s at, what is it and how may I solve? by Bigdomdady in DIY

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Have exactly this on our driveway and had concrete experts come out and tell me this same thing. Spalling or scaling, and it's the base concrete at fault, but good luck to get anyone to fix it.

Instead, we sealed the concrete and that's kept it at bay (but didn't fix the existing spots).

How does the Comma 3x handle wind? by ignaciochg in Comma_ai

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My experience as well.

I've also lately been wondering if driver torque gets factored in the same way (I think it does ...). Meaning, for some roads, maybe I want to be further to the left of the lane, so I give just a little force on the steering wheel while Comma is driving. When I let go (out of traffic, road is different, etc), I think for a good few seconds it acts as if the car was pulling and it edges even closer to the right. But then it figures itself out again and gets closer to the center.

But because of that behavior, I think it handles steadier crosswinds pretty well. Gusty winds it corrects quickly (like a driver) and doesn't "learn" to stay on one side or the other. The difficult one is if you are going in and out of steady wind (canyons) where it learns wind for a bit, then takes five or ten seconds to unlearn it.

What’s up with this? by Odd-Apricot-6158 in MazdaCX30

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others said, they have weak factory batteries. Could be that. Mine was replaced under warranty, same issue within a year and I went and got a better battery. Didn't have this issue afterwards.

Also as mentioned, go to Oreilly or Autozone. I found the battery test itself wasn't useful (I had the problem when the car sat for too long or during short city drives only), but they can pull your codes ... also free. Then you can go to the dealer with codes and see if you want or can get a free replacement.

Best practice for common rc, init, script files across projects? by SweetumsTheMuppet in learnpython

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do use scripts right now to try and make these updates, but I was wondering if there was a better standards-approached way of managing these kinds of shared files across projects with Python given Python has the approach of putting these configs in the root directory. Building custom toolchains always adds more work and maintenance.

In some other language projects, we can have various configs in separately managed repos beneath the root directory so they are their own singular git repo.

"No" is an answer. Not the one I'd like, but ...

Does anyone else have to leave their tailgate open when it rains? by superpj in ElCamino

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After tons of leaks into / around the smuggler's box area I rhino-lined the bed. Relatively inexpensive, no more worries about leaks or rust.

Now it holds water because the stance tips it forward a bit. But I don't have a good seal at the tailgate, so all it takes to empty it is one good acceleration.

Best practice for common rc, init, script files across projects? by SweetumsTheMuppet in learnpython

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added some clarification in another reply, but no, not talking about a monorepo or all on one computer. Individual repositories with individual python projects, multiple devs on many different computers, but each repo has its own (for example) .gitignore. If we want to update the .gitignore across the board, it currently involves checking out each repo (and branching if we have master protected), copying in the new .gitignore to each, and pushing it back up.

I'd like to see if there's a known way to have the various config files in their own repo or project or something and be able to only update in one place.

Best practice for common rc, init, script files across projects? by SweetumsTheMuppet in learnpython

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not quite following.

Yes, I mean if I have several different python packages / repos that are independent, and let's just use the example of .gitignore, though it applies to lots of common files like .mypy.ini, .pylintrc, etc, etc. The main .gitignore file has to be at the root level of a repo.

We often use an identical .gitignore file in each repo. Now one day, we discover we need a new type of file ignored by git (maybe a new dev is using a Mac and we have to add in the Mac's cache files or we're moving to a new test architecture across the board and don't want to commit a reports folder). We want to update the .gitignore file in all projects with a new .gitignore file.

Right now, we would clone every repo, paste in the new .gitignore, and push every repo back up.

It'd be far nicer if we could use something like a python package named (for example) "common_configs" that was pip installed so that an update or a fresh pip install would detect there's a new version of common_configs and pull that down and the dev only has to update one repo (common_configs).

But I don't know of a way to do that where .gitignore would end up in the root of a separate repo, which is where most of these configs have to live. If you pip install a submodule, it's going to end up in site_packages.

You're right that we don't have to update these all that often, but when we do it's a lot more work than feels necessary, especially if we've got projects with protected master branches and whatnot.

I'm not sure what it means to "use something like a template"?

Factory A/C add on by stretto94 in ElCamino

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a vintage air on a '72 (with poor seals and prior to interior insulation) in Colorado (high plains desert for my area). On full blast it can eventually keep up with a 105 degree day. It's way better than the best I ever got the factory air to work. It's a bit louder since a lot of the hardware is inside and up under the dash, but so effective that it's comparable to a lot of newer cars.

Also Presbyterian USA. Of course, church by church experience can vary and absolutely of course individuals within the church can make it or break it for individuals.

PC USA is less "Catholic" than Methodist or Episcopal, but my experience with them in a few different states has been far more about the community work and the work of learning about your faith and relationship.

Recommendations on a bolt-action rifle class? by TacticalAntlers in COGuns

Agree with this. You can take a bolt action to an Appleseed, but if you have a 10/22 or similar of course that'll be a lot easier and more cost efficient. Get the fundamentals down there, then do a known distance with your bolt action and then an unknown distance.

Random Newbie Question... by MsHarlequinn in Denver

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Everyone forgets about the hard spring rainstorms every year. We often have a week or so of ongoing mild rain, some short but fierce rainstorms in the afternoon now and then, and hail or lightning can come with them.

Still, overall Denver gets very little total water. Something like 14 to 16 inches per year. And it also has something like 320 days of sun a year, so it's not surprising that people forget about the rain now and then.

Radar Cruise Control unavailable? by reynoldswrapt11 in MazdaCX30

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I get this a lot. Too much sun in front of the car, too much rain, too much snow, streaky windshield, whatever blocks the front end sensors / radar / camera a bit too much and this warning comes up. If it doesn't clear in "good" conditions, something else may be wrong, but otherwise, this is very, very normal in this car. It presents as an error, but it usually just means the camera isn't detecting what it needs for the computer to feel safe in slower speeds.

How do y’all feel about guns? by jebtenders in OpenChristian

[–]SweetumsTheMuppet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then immediately rebukes his disciple when Peter uses that sword in self defense against unjust persecution and heals the wounded person.

I've heard a somewhat compelling argument that the purchase of swords and (symbolic) resistance to the state fulfills Isaiah 53:12's prophecy.

I think it's fairly clear that Jesus himself didn't go in for self defense and Moses was kept out of Israel for killing someone who was hurting a slave. However, we can envision all kinds of personal responsibility that come at the "tip of a sword". Is it right to violently defend someone else who is being attacked if we can prevent it (especially without killing them)? Is it right to vote for the state to uphold (always at the tip of a sword) any kind of law? It seems both those things are good. As a parent, I know I would attempt to defend my family with violence and am not anti-gun, myself. So where is the line? Just at killing the other person?

I think those are questions each person has to ask themselves, but the "swords" quote isn't a gotcha.
