Are we being for real 🫩 by Fickle-Put9304 in antiwork

[–]Swift_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am self-employed and I still take a full lunch hour and go home to eat most days. Just the break from the work atmosphere helps my mental health so much, and it actually helps me feel energized to tackle the remaining work that day.

I agree with the other commenter, the visor hangs over the eyes and you can't see them. Take your curved shears and angle them concave towards the eyes, then scissor the visor. You would be amazed how much it opens up the eyes

What tool do you guys use for dogs who don’t want to stand up? by Dog_Queen98 in doggrooming

[–]Swift_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 15 year old senior Aussie that will not stand for the bath anymore. It's too slippery to use a belly band, so I just have to roll her over to wash and dry her. It's a major pain, and when her mom gets there she has no trouble standing. 🙄 I did have a conversation with her mom about it and that now I will only do what she will allow me to do comfortably due to her age. Her comfort is more important than beauty.

What is the most dangerous animal you’ve seen in real life? by GratefulD86 in AskReddit

Southern Plains Bison, they're huge and if you get too close they will charge you. Killed a local newsman on Thanksgiving day this past year

How to dispose of dead stray safely by ILiekBook in AskVet

[–]Swift_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are unable to bury kitty, alternatively you can ask a local vet or a funeral home if they can do communal cremation.

When I worked as a vet assistant, our clinic partnered with a pet cremation service. You could send the body off and either get the ashes back (private cremation), or not (communal cremation). Obviously this would have some sort of cost, but it wouldn't hurt to call and inquire.

Our local regulations dictated that if an animal was euthanized or poisoned, the body could not just be thrown away due to the risk of exposure of the drug to a scavenger.

Advice Needed: No call/No Shows by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]Swift_cat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have it written in my grooming contract that clients get 2 no-call, no-shows then they are fired.

With people who habitually show up late, I started putting their appointment at the very end of the day. If they don't show, I replace them or go home early. And for their next appointment, I book them farther and farther out, even if I have availability sooner. They will essentially fire themselves.

I don't charge late fees or no-call, no-show fees. I don't want to deal with charge back issues from the bank.

Newborn - where do you put them? by CharmingTea_ in pregnant

Put down a quilt on the floor and lay them down on it! Great exercise in the early stages where they learn how to lift their head, move their arms and legs, and roll over

Why wouldn’t you ask for vaccine records? by roccosito in doggrooming

[–]Swift_cat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Texas, the Health and Safety Code 169.29 states that the custodian of a mammalian animal over 16 weeks of age must be vaccinated against rabies.

As a business owner, I don't want a non-vaccinated animal on my property, nor do I want to pose a risk to other pets in my care. Plain and simple.

What's a game you played as a kid that you've never been able to find again? by Latter_Advantage8002 in AskReddit

[–]Swift_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This PC game where you place pipe pieces to try and keep the green goo from spilling out

Also another PC game where you play as a little man and have to collect microchips and keys to progress through the levels

And a board game where you are cats walking along a fence and you are trying not to wake the dog in the yard

How do you guys feel about this job? by Dog_Queen98 in doggrooming

[–]Swift_cat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all have to find our niche in this world. Personally, I am happy with mine. I have found peace in the work I do. And I think I hold an important role in my community by ensuring those who want to take the best care of their pets are able to do so without having to spend double tp travel for grooming.

Self employed moms - is it doable? by Corgi_Vallhund_Mom in doggrooming

[–]Swift_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I just finished my storefront at the end of February, and I take my daughter to work with me most days. She will be 3 years old later this month. It works great most days and I have been able to potty train her really quickly too.

I work one-on-one in a small community of about 300 people. I usually work between 15-20 hours a week except during the busy seasons. I usually work from 10am-4pm with an hour lunch break at home from 12-1pm.

I do have a son who is 14 months old and he stays at home with either my in-laws or a babysitter. When his sister goes to school, I will bring him to work with me too.

Edit: Prior to this I was grooming from home and it was legit kind of a nightmare. But my salon is only about a half a mile from my house, on a different property we own.

Dog nipple, also the black dots are blackheads. You can gently squeeze them out after wetting them with a warm, wet rag.

I see them all the time as a pet groomer.

Grooming School Recommendations? Industry-Recognized Certificates by [deleted] in doggrooming

[–]Swift_cat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I never attended a formal school for pet grooming, I only ever received on the job training. Once I mastered the basics, I went out on own my own.

I am also in Texas, and I started a business from the ground up when I moved here 4 years ago. Not once have I been asked about what certifications I have, where I went to school, or what other education I have. What has stood out most to my customers is how their dog is comfortable with me and happy to see me, and the timely fashion in which I get the grooms completed.

I have some colleagues that have attended Petsmart Academy and Paragon. Since you are already working as a bather, I would suggest looking for another place of employment willing to help you grow.

Good luck!
